To anyone whose sales are down
« on: August 30, 2013, 11:27:32 PM »
I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life.

And that is why I succeed.

Keep writing. I am sure every good author published a lot of garbage before finding success. This is true for any business. Barring the lucky few who fall into it (and subsequently don't appreciate it fully anyway) all victory is hard won.

To keep going has two possible outcomes: success or failure.
To stop has one only.

Thank you, David. I needed it. At the rate I'm failing, it almost feels like an accomplishment :)

Publishing in the new world of digital distribution has one thing in common with publishing in the days of brick and mortar distribution. It's a business for people who are too stubborn to know when they are beaten.

Still my go-to piece of blogging advice when sales are down, when the creative juices just aren't simmering, or when that morpher procrastination takes hold.

I watch this by Alan Watts. It makes me remember that I write simply because I love it.

Great quote David - from the Nike ad a few years ago if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the link Bleek, bookmark-worthy.
The first draft is a huge pile of clay that you've laboriously heaped on your table, patting it into a rough shape as you go along. From the second draft onward, you'll cut away chunks, add bits, pat and punch and pinch, until you finally have a gorgeous figure of, oh, Marcus Aurelius. Or a duck. But a damn fine duck. - Phaeal

Thanks, David.

I was up early this morning and rattled about 6000 words.

Reading that quote you posted - I feel pumped again. I want to thump my chest and yell like Tarzan - but I won't on account of it would wake the wife and she would surely hit me and that would surely hurt.

A lot.

So I'm going to write a little more.

Quietly... ;)

So, don't ask me how I got there, but I listened to my first Macklemore song ever today -- not even knowing the song name when I clicked. It was "10,000 hours"

I'm like WTF? A rap about Malcolm Gladwell???

My sides still hurt from giggling like a nerd.

But there's this:

Quote
The greats weren't great because at birth they could paint
The greats were great cause they paint a lot

and:
Quote
A life lived for art is never wasted.

Thanks, I needed a boost. Have been losing faith. After all, why write a fourth novel when the first three aren't selling.

You're thinking about Shaq. Jordan just made the incredibly awesome but unappreciated Space Jam.

YES! I actually love that little flick.
