Createspace Expanded Distribution Sales
« on: January 31, 2014, 10:33:15 AM »
The last few days I've started getting a bunch of sales for my print books through Createspace's expanded distribution. I hadn't seen any sales through this channel before and suddenly I am getting them daily. Has anybody else noticed a bump in expanded distribution sales? Am wondering if something changed.

How do you tell whether it's an expanded distribution sale or a regular sale?

Go to your CreateSpace dash board, click on "January Royalties" for whichever book you want to check, and then click "Details."  You can also select it when you do a report.

Expanded distro sales will tend to show up in spurts because they are not live-time sales to customers. They are sales to retailers. If BN orders three copies to keep in inventory, they will show up all at once. It might take them three months to sell those copies to customers, but the sales have already been posted to you. Also, sales to actual brick and mortar stores are usually reported monthly through Ingrams, so if Jane Doe Bookstore bought four copies on December 1 and Jake's Bookstore bought 1 copy December 10th and Alice's bookstore bought 1 copy December 24, all 6 might show up at once when Ingrams files their report January 10th.

I noticed 5 Expanded distribution sales in the last 24 hours, and though it's small change--because the royalties are tiny compared to Amazon sales, and the only way to increase them is to raise prices overall--it means that someone somewhere is reading these books.

Not only are they reported in spurts - they are way delayed. According to Amazon

Quote
Sales information may take up to six weeks from when a sale is made to appear in the sales reports.

So seeing sales come into Create Space tells you very little (if anything) about the timing of a reader buying it. It's just random free money. :)

Hi,

Actually I just had half a dozen sales this morning on a few books. Not that I'm going to get rich off them. Because I wanted to keep the prices of my books as low as possible, when I signed up for expanded distribution I paired my new prices back to the bone. One of them earns me a gross profit of six cents per book on the expanded distribution channels - though I think something like three or four bucks through the Amazon channel. So after tax that's what - four and a half cents?

What can I buy for four and half cents?

Cheers, Greg.
