Amazon Fire Phone -- Outrageous Data usage
« on: July 26, 2014, 11:45:56 AM »
My wife got her Kindle Fire phone yesterday.  We logged it into our home network, she installed the Fackebook and Netflix apps (she didn't watch anything). She played around with it at home the included 3D games, phone setting, etc). Then in the evening we used the map service over 4G to find our way to dinner for about a ten minute drive. She didn't get any facebook updates of anything while we ate dinner.

Today her bill shows she's used almost 20% of her 1gig of data.

Anyone else have a Kindle Fire phone? Can you check your data usage?

Hold on.
Ok the apps are respectively 79MB and 20MB.   I am assuming you used the Google maps app.   Yes that uses some data.  How long did she play games for?
I know when I got my phone, I went through 300MB in a very short time.   I know where 100 of it went.   If you want to find out what is using data, go to the menu, system settings then data usage.   Scroll down.  It should give you a list.
Note mine is not a fire phone but is still an android.
That map uses quite a bit of data.   And if you stream music you are looking at about 1MB per 5 minutes.

In other words, it is easy to run through data in a hurry.  Is this your first smart phone?

I just looked on my phone and in two weeks, I have used 288MB of data.   That would be 28% of 1 gig.   I do not use facebook or netflix.   I use the map feature, and several apps to check prices.   Tell you what on Sept 10, I will give you my data usage without downloading any apps.   My service runs from the 11th to the 10th.
I forgot I downloaded Lowes, Home Depot and assorted others.
Or I will be out tomorrow and can check data usage on the map feature.

The only thing my wife did was wasn't over our locial network was the maps.--that was less then 1 meg of data.

I just got off the phone with Mayday and they said that number represented my total data usage, and for the phone.

They verified that I was connected to my home network, and that something was amiss, but that I had to call AT&T--that I my G4 vdata usage should not be nearly that high.

Oh I misunderstood your question.   But I am kind of glad I did because my figures will give anyone else reading these posts what they can expect if they do not connect to a wireless network.
I would wait till Monday about 10AM to call ATT.   I have always had better luck calling during normal business hours.  Ask for a US rep if you do not get one initially.

Good luck with your phone.

NP--I hope I didn't come off as rude, I didn't intend to.

I actually just spoke with AT&T, the confirmed something is wrong, but do not know if it's with the network or the phone. They will escalate to their support team.

I am seeing the same issue.  I have only checked email perhaps a dozen times since the phone arrived and checked a couple of websites for less than 5 minutes.  I don't use social media and have not downloaded any apps.  On my old phone, even using navigation, I rarely went above half a GB a month.  I'm showing 20% of 1 GB gone since this Thursday evening.

Silly question:
Are there any apps pre-installed?    Just a thought but could ATT be charging you for what was installed before you got the phone?   Sounds like a major glitch.

No, MJA, you did not sound rude at all.

There are literally dozens of Amazon related apps preloaded on the phone.  I'm going to try and remove most of them.  Do you think that is causing the problem?

I know the Microsoft phone had this issue when it first came out.

The weird thing is, my phone says I've used 127'ish megs of data total (including from my local network). AT&T is saying all of that actually went through their 4G service.
We haven't left the house today, but the AT&T rep, said I have used their 4G service today. It's a small cabin, so the network access it good everywhere, even outside.

No Cammie,
That was not what I was thinking.   Good luck trying to uninstall those apps.
What I was thinking is did you get data charges when they were downloaded originally?  Though that sounds odd.

MJA is there a way to turn off the 4G while on the wireless?

However some apps do use data rather the phone is off or on.  Go to each app and check its settings.   Not Amazon apps but I had to turn off notifications and check weather every so often on my phone.

On a Fire HDX 4G with Verizon 4G, at the top of the screen it says Verizon 4G LTE at the top with the four vertical bars showing signal strength when connected to the 4G.  When it's connected to a wireless network, it says "Verizon Wireless" and has the four vertical bars and then the fan shaped WiFi indicator.

You can off access to the 4G Mobile Network under Wireless > Mobile Network if you want to be sure it's not trying to access the 4G while you're home (though, of course, it shouldn't be doing that--it should switch to the WiFi; the 4G Fire HDX does.

Posting this as I would think the indicators and OS options would be similar on the Fire Phone and AT&T?

I was thinking the same thing Betsy was -- I'd suggest turning OFF the ATT connection unless and until you want to use it.  So there's no way it could 'accidentally' use the cell network vs an available wifi network.  That said, it should be set up to use wifi unless there isn't one available -- that's the way my Droid MAXX (on Verizon) does.

Hope you can get something figured out.

Great idea Besty and Ann!

Just not sure if my wife wants to deal with that. She went with the Kindle phone, as she found Android too complicated.

I'll call Amazon tomorrow and see if they can escalate the issue. And I''ll try to update the thread when I get a reply from either one of them.

At the very least, I'd look at the phone and see if you can tell whether it's logging on to the 4G Network while it's supposed to be on the WiFi network.

Have you tried making sure all apps are "killed"? Sometimes even though you're not using an app it's still running in background. I'm an apple user so I don't know how to do that on an android system but I do know there are apps specifically designed to "kill" apps that you aren't using

Yes, but with a highly polished front-end. She uses a Kindle Fire, and finds it easier than my android tablet.

There are apps and widgets that will help you figure out what's going on, as well. Here's one that's pretty well reviewed, though I've not used it myself. (My verizon phone comes with one.)

And this one is supposed to tell you if you have apps that are using resources when you think they're off:

It may not even matter, as my wife's calls (from home) keep getting disconnected--which is strange because I have a cheap AT&T phone that works fine.

I told her I'd spend the day tomorrow trying to figure out all the things she's having trouble with.

If your wife is not used to a smart phone,  she may be accidentally hitting the off button with her cheek.   I did that more than once.   Watch how she moves her head.
Good luck.

I am probably naive, but does everyone with the fire phone only getting 1GB on the data plan?  Is there an unlimited plan?  I do not have a smart phone and will probably not buy one, but I might consider it some day.

I believe 1 GB is the basic plan but I'm sure you can buy/pay for more. What you buy depends on how you use it.

We have 2GB between us, my son and I, and he even streams a fair amount of music. (Not Fire phones and not ATT.) The only times we've gotten close to the limit is when we're traveling and I'm using more than usual 'cause I need at least a minute or two of daily hotspot so I can d/l my newspaper to my kindle. :) Both of us mostly use the 'internet' features via WiFi and don't, as a rule, spend a lot of time on the 'net over 3G/4G.

Most providers no longer offer unlimited data plans, though the plans usually include unlimited text and voice. They'll offer you help to figure out what you need and, for Verizon, at least, it's really easy to change plans . . . even mid month. So if it looks like our data usage is going to exceed our allotment well before the end of our month, I can go on line and add an extra GB for $10 rather than going over and being billed $15.  Then next month we have the higher amount, but, again, I can put it back down if I want to. We have alerts set so I know if we're getting close and can decide well before going over if I need to increase something.

That said, the Hubs has a voice/text phone only. And he doesn't really do texts much. He's happy to not have to worry about how long he talks to people because, for him, it's the main way people get in touch with him for work and personal stuff. And if he wants to know something that requires internet when we're out and about, he asks me. :D

The problem the OP is reporting seems to be that the phone should have been using WiFi and instead used 3G/4G data. Or at least counted it as though it did. I hope MJ lets us know what the resolution is.

The only way to get unlimited data is with a prepaid.   Now my husband just buys minutes for his phone.  It will go online and just uses his minutes.  All he uses his for is talk.   If he needs to know something, he just asks me.
It runs him $18.50 a month (111.00 every 6 months). 1500 minutes.
Yes they roll over.
My smart phone is $50.83 a month for unlimited everything.

I have 10GB with ATT, 3 phones, unlimited text/voice - $140ish a month as a ball park. They are are all iPhones though.

I chew up a several GB a month, but I am not on WiFi that much. My wife is almost always on Wifi and uses sometimes less than 100 megs a month. So I would expect the Fire Phone to act the same. Definitely something up with that fire.

Did the OS just update? That could chew a GB easy.

Yeah -- but you'd think that'd've come down via WiFi if possible.

Yeah, but SOMETHING seems to have come down vai cell. So I am taking a guess as at single event that might cause it.

It really sounds like it's defaulting to cellular instead of wifi, even when a wifi network is available. I've never heard of this before. The only smartphones I've had are iphones and I leave wifi on all the time, which it defaults to anytime I'm in an available network. I actually had my data plan reduced to the lowest amount, I think it's 200mb because I use so little data on my phone ( except when traveling).

Just an update, no one from AT&T has called me back out the strange data usage (they promised to do so my Tuesday). But my wife is pretty fedup with AT&T--she's called 3-4 times just to get her voice mail setup; it works for 1/2 a day then stops. Also, she doesn't like that it doesn't show the city and state the caller is calling from. This is a sales line, so that feature really helps her see when an important client is calling. The phone may be going back.

Interesting thing is as soon as I installed the App Ann recommended, the cellular data usage fell to almost nothing. Strange.

Thank you, you helped me make up my mind.  I was going to order the fire phone.  Now I am going to go with Cricket and their unlimited plan.  All I would need is a large bill.

I did not go with Cricket.  Went with a Norkia Lumia 521.  Plan with Team Mobile.  Phone is very good and unlimited for only $60.00 a month.  I am very happy and glad I did not get the Amazon phone.  I could not get a big bill.  I will wait till they work the bugs out.
