I like the old one better, but would tentatively suggest that neither cover is a best seller. I hope that's okay to say?

Sure that's okay to say! Sales went up today but the old ranking hasn't updated yet. It's currently:

Yes, though I think it could be better - more contrast, better fonts and titling, brighter colors.

Phew, thanks! I hate being critical nowadays. Not everyone really wants to hear it. So, I need to study your genre a bit, but I think you need a better cover. The image on the new cover is okay, its the colour and SFX etc that put me off. I'm not your target audience, but I would have thought a nice clean photograph would be better. I really am out of my depth for your categpry, but to me the cover looks like it was produced in MS paint. I'm really sorry if that isn't true, but it "looks" like it to me.

What if you made "An Introduction to" Smaller and the rest of the title big?
I agree with more contrast. Maybe a darker gray.

Yes, though as Heather Hamilton-Senter says, it could be improved.  I think it is far better than the new cover though.  The old one looks more like a professional, non-fiction book cover.  The new one screams "I have Photoshop and Word and neon colors are awesome!"

I also think the image on the old cover better represents the title and than the new image does.

I like the new one, simply because the old one reminds me of an old outdated textbook.

I think the colors on the old cover are more traditional for non-fiction. The colors on the new cover kind of make it look like a YA story. - Jennifer

It's a textbook, so you don't have much to work with.
You do have a high ranking. You can be proud of that.

Thanks everyone; that's great feedback! I've left the old cover on the paperback edition. I only changed the cover for the ebook.  I can change it back or design something else if it fails to grab attention!

Meanwhile, I'm going to play around with the fonts!

Who is your target audience? I think the first cover will appeal to older folk, the second more to the younger layman, the third to a more scholarly person.  My guess is the second cover will sell the most.

No, I prefer the new one; it's got a bit of zing. The old one looked very dull and old-fashioned, like something from the 50s (if you don't mind me saying so!).

Found a really cool image that might work for you. It's on Thinkstock: http://www.thinkstockphotos.com/search/#466625617/s=DynamicRank/f=CPIHVX

I played around with a background and some text to give you an example of what you might do with it. Good luck!

None of your images are horrible; it's the fonts that need work. Your newest one has better typography but there's still room for improvement.

Can you afford to work with a cover artist just for the title/author?  I think you could really make that last one pop with a really well done title. If you look at nonfiction books, that's mostly what they're working with. Of the images the man with the musculature showing is the strongest.

(cool cover, Howietzer but it looks like sci fi to me.)

Thanks, Josh! I'll leave the new cover up for now to see if there's any impact on sales. If there isn't, I'll upload the latest cover.

I agree, Melody! I passed on your comment to the author, and he agrees with you, too. He said that you are very perceptive!

Thanks so much for going to all that trouble, Howietzer! What a great choice you made! I showed the cover to the author and he thought it was very attractive, but too serious for an introductory text. The first edition of another book by the same author targeted at postgraduates uses similar colours:

Judy, the book has already been through three publishers in hard cover and paperback. I won't be spending anything on cover artwork because any sales from the ebook are just a bonus!

Thanks everyone; I'm knocked out with the feedback I've received!

I don't mind you saying so, at all, Geraldine! The old one doesn't show off too well on the 'net but it prints beautifully; it's a trade off.
