Discrimination against women
« on: April 01, 2015, 04:41:51 AM »
Between 100 million and 140 million women and girls are thought to be living with the consequences of female genital mutilation, according to the World Health Organisation.

FGM is defined by the WHO as "all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons". It is recognised as a violation of the human rights of women and girls. In December 2012, the United Nations general assembly unanimously voted to work for the elimination of FGM throughout the world.

"It reflects deep-rooted inequality between the sexes, and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women," says the WHO. "It is nearly always carried out on minors and is a violation of the rights of children. The practice also violates a person's rights to health, security and physical integrity, the right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and the right to life when the procedure results in death."

On another thread, a comment was made about women's rights to gratification. The implication was that I didn't understand. I understand only too well. The rights and freedom given to women in western society are not enjoyed by many other cultures around the world. Even within western society, mutilation of young females in sub-cultures still exists today. If authors feel strongly about women's rights to sexual freedom, they should form pressure groups where they can make a real difference. Choose the battlefield and choose it wisely.

Very laudable, but what has this to do with writers and writing?

Locking this thread.

Shelagh--

two things; one, continuing a discussion from a locked thread is not allowed; kind of defeats the purpose of locking the thread.

Second, I'm pretty sure this discussion falls under the umbrella of political discussion, which is not allowed on KBoards.

Let's move on to discussions appropriate to this forum.

Let me clarify, as apparently my prior post was not well understood.

Political discussions are not allowed on Kboards.  This is a well established rule here--the discussions never go well.

Also, again you may not start another thread to continue a discussion in a locked thread.

If you have any questions about this, please PM me or one of the other moderators or Harvey the site owner.

Thanks.
