America Star Books - Part of Publish America?
« on: September 02, 2015, 08:28:40 AM »
Just got a message via my website that they had seen my book on CreateSpace and they want to know if they can promote it at the Miami Book Fair in November.
All I'm asking you in return is if we may add you to our book marketing email list.
I'm giving you two Miami Book Fair promotion options to choose from: 1: you may forward a copy of your book to our address (see below), and we'll display it in Miami, or 2: we'll include your work in the Hot Indy Author Guide that we're displaying and distributing during the Miami Book Fair. Either option is free

They have a Facebook Page, but a quick Google makes me think they used to be Publish America, which, as I remember, did not have a very good press.

I received a similar message from them through my contact form. I did a web search, and the number of complaints about them was frightening.

I thought it was suspicious. I wonder how many new writers will be taken in by them?  >:(

Too many. We have to keep spreading the word. If you guys get more notifications about it, contact the folks at Writer Beware. They've been following ASB/PA for a while and do their part to inform writers.

It's them. I emailed them back saying "I am not interested in working with Publish America at this time." They shut up and went away.

I copied and pasted your reply to them. If we all do the same they might get the message  :D

Here's my reply:

Your company is one step above drug dealing on the moral scale. Your company scams authors and it's no surprise it's earned a one star rating at Consumer Affairs. http://www.consumeraffairs.com/misc/publish-america.html

You, personally, should be ashamed to work for such a company.

Please remove my name from all your lists, and never contact me again.

Sincerely,

David VanDyke

I have to laugh at your combination of bluntness and civility:

You are scum.

Sincerely,

Alas, you should have added "in my opinion" to that because they are rather litigious and may sue you for slander.  :(

I'm not even joking. They troll forums looking for people who don't quantify their statements and threaten websites and people with lawsuits.  :'(

Well, how lovely. I just got contacted by them as well. Glad I found this info. Here is the full text of the email (mistakes included):

Subject: LA Times Book Fair in Los Angeles

Message: Dear Ksenia Anske:
My name is Jackie Velnoskey. I saw that you have written The Badlings. My question for you is: may I promote the book at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books in L.A., early April? It costs you nothing. All I'm asking you in return is if we may add you to our book marketing email list.
We would like to include your work in the Hot Indy Author Guide that we're displaying and distributing during the LA Times event. This option is free. Check out our Facebook page when we report live from L.A. where over 150,000+ are expected to attend.
At America Star Books we have a book promotion department that does nothing but offering book promotion at the lowest fees in the nation. We attend all of the big fairs and festivals: Book Expo America, London Book Fair, Frankfurt Book Fair, Miami Book Fair International, the American Library Association mid-winter and annual Conferences, Baltimore Book Festival, and so on.
All I am asking you at this time is if we may add you to our email list when we issue our next book promotion offers. You may at any time unsubscribe, and we will promptly cease sending you any further emails. America Star Books has been around for more than fifteen years, serving over 60,000authors. Participating in book promotion is entirely optional.

Thank you for considering this opportunity. I am looking forward to hearing back from you.

Haven't decided how I will decline them yet, but probably something along the lines of asking to explain their "admirable" practices.

Don't bother, Ksenia. You'll just encourage them and then you'll never be rid of them.

It's a scam to get newbies and people who don't bother to research things to get caught up in paying for dubious "marketing" services, which will cost a lot of money for little to no positive results.

In my opinion.
