Question-mark characters in posts
« on: February 09, 2016, 08:56:56 PM »
Is anyone else seeing this in posts? I keep seeing apostrophes and smart quotes as question-mark icons like below:

It looks like the forums are unable to handle smart quotes or something. Just thought I would point it out.

It looks like the forum's site design is set to use ISO-8859-1 encoding instead of UTF-8, which would be needed to display the smart quotes (and em-dashes, which have also been replaced with the question mark icons).

I believe this is a known issue that they have not be able to resolve for some reason. It's probably most often seen when you copy/paste from a Word document, which likes to convert typed quote characters into "smart" directional quotes/apostrophes (which sometimes still don't render nicely in UTF-8, since Microsoft sometimes uses its own characters set -- though there are ways to work around that, too ( http://www.ebookworm.us/filtering-ms-word-text/ ).

I have noticed it more in the last week and it seems to be getting worse.  It makes the book descriptions in the Book Corner Book Discovery Day posts almost unreadable. :(
A book, I think, is very like a little golden door.
That takes me into places where I've never been before.
It leads me into fairyland or countries strange and far.
And, best of all, the golden door always stands ajar. - Adelaide Love

I see this stuff a lot, yes. I'm glad to have found this site but it is set up quite oddly. :) I'm just glad that tapatalk is enabled.

I've noticed it in my signature, which was typed in by hand. Oh, the humanity!

I just looked for the first time, and it is interesting that if you book my profile page, the quotes in my signature display correctly, but when my signature is displayed in the forum they come through as question marks.

And when you look in the profile page, they are "directional" quotes, and thus the problem here, which for whatever reason is not able to serve the text up as UTF-8. (Which, just thinking out loud, could also be a database connection issue, if for some reason some pages tell the DB they're going to be talking in "UTF-8" while others don't....hmmm....)

Maybe I cut and pasted that quote into my sit after all....I went and replaced the quote marks by typing in new ones on my iPad, and they now seem to display correctly!

It does seem to me that the problems come in when doing a cut/paste of anything but basic text.  Harvey never could figure out what the problem was. . . . we've alerted the new tech folks . . . . will follow up and see if they have had any thoughts . . . .

As an update to this issue: the forum techies are looking into it, but it turns out, for some reason, it's not a quick fix. Meanwhile the best suggestion is, if you write something up in Word (or other more advanced text editor) that you want to copy and past, save it first as a .txt file which strips out the odd characters. Then do the copy and paste.

Or if using Word, turn off the auto-correct option to replace "straight quotation marks" with "smart quotation marks".

Or just use a simple plain text editor in the first place. :)

This will definitely work in most cases . . . . unfortunately some special characters like the British pound sign also won't display. :(  But, in most cases, it's the 'smart quotes' so, yeah, turning them off will help.
