Character Set Problems

I am getting a lot of posts that look like this:

Any hope that will be fixed?

Our tech support says they're working on it but it's not as straightforward as one would think; which is the same thing Harvey found--he was working on it too (though it seemed to get even worse after the migration to the new server).  They don't want to fix one problem and cause another.  So they're testing things.

I'll make sure they see this as a reminder.

:(

If one just types in the forum software, there isn't usually a problem with the quotes and apostrophes...but other special characters like the British pound sign and accented letters "Writers' Caf" are going to have issues.  Interestingly, they'll show up ok while creating the post, but the rendering of the actual post is where it causes the problem.

I looked in this part of the board because I was wondering why accent characters showed up as diamonds even though I typed them directly from my keyboard. I guess there must not really be a fix for it since this thread is so old and the problem still exists?

For one thing, they need to change their application/server config to change the HTTP "Content-Type" header to use UTF-8 as the character set instead of ISO-8859-1

Response Headers

Cache-Control: private
Connection: Keep-Alive
Content-Encoding: gzip
Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 <<<--- this one
Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2017 01:17:29 GMT
Expires: Mon, 26 Jul 1997 05:00:00 GMT
Keep-Alive: timeout=2, max=500
Last-Modified: Mon, 25 Sep 2017 01:17:30 GMT
Pragma: no-cache
Server: Apache/2.4.25 (Unix) OpenSSL/1.0.1e-fips mod_bwlimited/1.4 mod_fcgid/2.3.9
Transfer-Encoding: chunked
Vary: Accept-Encoding
X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff
X-Frame-Options: SAMEORIGIN
X-Powered-By: PHP/5.4.45
X-XSS-Protection: 1

200 OK

PS: Assuming this is a PHP application, simply adding this to the main controller file (before any text gets output) might do the trick:
Code: [Select]
header('Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8');

Thanks, NogDog,

I'll pass this on to the tech team.

I now cant type a post on my iPad (just updated to the latest iOS) without any apostrophe turning into a weird symbol. I have no way to type a non curly quote, which I suspect is the problem. :(

Feel good romance with a touch of magic.
