The only one even remotely an option for me is the mystery Walk into Silence. But I am not jumping on it yet. One of the reviews called it a dark thriller. And its usually why I don't read thrillers as I don't wan't to go too dark in my reading anymore. I'll mark it as an option. None of the other offerings are anything I would read.

The only one that remotely appeals to me is the kid's book.

Walk into Silence

That would have been my second choice -- and I've wishlisted it for when it comes out for real because it'll probably be available for KU/Prime Reading/KOLL

It's the kind of thing I often listen to as I walk or quilt--and I was able to add the Audible audio for $1.99.  So I'm happy!

I think I'll put the sci-fi on my wish list; it was my second choice.

Walk into Silence

I got this and read it last night. It was pretty good, didn't knock my socks off. I didn't think it was terribly dark, pretty average level of violence and emotion for mystery/thriller, but if you're particularly sensitive to characters with abusive pasts or who have lost a kid you might view it differently.

Better choices this month - I've gone for the sci-fi option Ocean of Storms.

Has anyone else noticed that the Kindle First program is a severe degree of control? Disclaimer: This is not a complaint. It's a mere observation that these Editor's picks (made free) pretty much determine which titles and authors will be guaranteed those coveted top spots? Just wondering if anyone else noticed that.

Well, the whole point of the program is for Amazon to promote books under its own imprints. Not really seeing a problem.

I, for one, appreciate that, if I choose one of these books for free (and I can only get one), I can be reasonably confident that I'm going to get a professionally produced product. They may not always have options that are things I'm particularly interested in, but they're generally, at least, a quality product: the writing is reasonably good, the story is reasonably interesting, and they're not riddled with stupid spelling mistakes or obvious factual errors.

And, really, it's not a whole lot different to big publishers sending out advance copies to reviewers in the hopes of generating buzz before publication. Or of putting their books on 'pre-order'. Heck, the last several Harry Potter Books were 'best sellers' for weeks before the books officially hit the shelves -- all because of pre-order.

Even independent authors do it. The best ones have folks they can send advance review copies to and those folks post reviews as soon as the book goes live. And many also utilize the ability to set a book as available for pre-order in order to have a technical slew of sales on the first day.

<moderator hat on> you might consider editing your post to remove the extra large print -- it kinda feels like you're shouting at us. :) <moderator hat off>
