New Game - And then the Murders Began

On this past March 3, there was a tweet by Marc Laidlaw that said, "The first line of almost any story can be improved by making sure the second line is, 'And then the murders began'."   It started catching on and Neil Gaiman soon dubbed the theory LaidLaw's Law.

So, this game is to prove or disprove the theory by posting the first line of a book and adding 'And then the murders began' as the second line. 


Here are my first few submissions:

That's just because the clause needs to be changed in the first two--with a small change of one word, it's possible they are improved:

It's a little wordy, but.....

Mr. Hungerton, her father, really was the most tactless person upon earth,--a fluffy, feathery, untidy cockatoo of a man, perfectly good-natured, but absolutely centered upon his own silly self. If anything could have driven me from Gladys, it would have been the thought of such a father-in-law. And then the murders began.

The first line of The Lost World, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is one of my favorite first lines. I inserted the second line as well, because it just fit!
