Thoughts on this cover? (Scifi action/survival)
« on: May 19, 2017, 05:13:25 PM »
I am in the process of redoing some of my covers and blurbs.  Can you guys tell me your thoughts on which of these style you like best?  All my books had the name style (as you see in my sig) and wondering if this 'works' or not.  Anyway here are some varieties.  Thanks.

(The story involves a guy with a jetpack/shooting so the image is relevant)

I like the last one.  The blocking on the others takes away from the image.

6 and 10 (bottom left corner, bottom right corner) both meet the criteria I set for covers. They have an interesting cover image, the text in both is good, and they explain immediately that the book is part of a series. The blocks and text styles on the others are much less attractive.

As a reader, I don't care for any of the ones with the black bands, and I can't say I care for the typography on the ones with the black text with blue shadowing, so that leaves the upper right and lower right hand corners (5 & 10?)

Hmm, interesting thanks for the comments, I personally liked the full image better myself.  One of my major questions is does the red/black name work, or is that too distracting?  I had it the same across all books, I could change it, but that was just the original thing I went with.  Thanks again guys.

The last one definitely but I'd prefer a different font for the title.

This was my original.  The biggest thing to note if if the name up top works.

IMNSHO, nix the red-black thing on all your covers. It does not look good.

I totally agree with this.

And I like #10 version of the cover with the small subtitle below the title. Not crazy about the title font, and I would give the title a little more space from the sides.

Just a single color, or would a soft online work?

I think you need to bite the bullet and spend money on genuine cover typography.

Some of your background art is good. Slipdrift is the best of the bunch. Eu-Knight would be great for fantasy, it looks like someone approaching Minas Tirith or something. Some of the others are also usable.

But your typography, I don't want to cause offense, but it's not good. The red glow around black on an author is illegible at small scales. On large scales, it looks busy and 1990s web page-ish. :(

You're also changing font on the title of every book, making it difficult to understand which story relates to which story. Maybe they're standalone. Maybe they're in the same universe. Maybe they're in a particular order, maybe not. Your covers don't organize or break out by series.

You can find skilled graphic artists who will do only text on a digital art you provide. They will take the original digital art, zoom it, crop it, contrast it, do what's needed to make it work with a cover. Then find a legible yet dramatic font that matches your genre.

I agree. You obviously spent money on great art.. so why not have an expert do your typography as well? There are some obvious issues with the Kerning (the spacing between the characters). Someone who knows illustrator or Photoshop well could fix the issues and give you a top-notch cover.

That was going to be my feedback too. The full image in the bottom right does look great, the tagline is nice on the larger scale cover but a throwaway for thumbnails. The black and red text is rough on the eyes and very hard at small sizes. But without that, it looks great!

Number 10, except change the title font. That font says grunge, western, or something else - but not Sci Fi.

And I echo most of the thoughts above. No black border, no color around the text, need more space around the #10 title (too close to edges). And there are several book cover professionals who will take your art and give you great typography.

The extra text on the bottom row of images is important, so keep that in any design. The black bars look horrible, so count those out. The first column has terrible typography. The last column wins, so it's image 10 by a long shot.

And I'm with Tulonsae about changing the font and improving your margins. The grunge font looks okay, but you'd be better getting an eye-catching sci-fi font, and probably using that same font for the entire cover. Check out fontsquirrel.com and I think you'll find a couple of really good sci-fi looking ones in sans-serif. (Some of the best choices for sci-fi are more like "sample" fonts; they're downloaded from offsite and are usually a single weight/style offered free to encourage you to buy more weights/styles of the same font. But there are plenty that are free outright.)

IMO, you may want to make all the text light-colored so it'll stand out more. You could try for something with a metallic sheen or a gradient. A very light black border around the text would help make it stand apart from the image.

I really like the bottom right one, including the font.
The red in the older ones annoys me. And stay away from the black bar things!

I like the last one, bottom right too. I also like the font. I would perhaps make it a bit smaller so it isn't edge-to-edge.

Ok guys thanks for all your insights.  How does this look with a far more 'simple' font?  Also I included a redo of the 2nd book showing the exact same font but on a totally inverted color to see how it works.  How does 1 compare to 2 with the very slight highlight of the name/subtitle?

Try all caps , and maybe smallcaps, on the title just to see how that looks, I love the font and the styling, though.

Thanks for the tips about all my font should be the same within the series, that never crossed my mind but I see how important it is.

Ok I redid all the cover's fonts.  Here is an example of them.  You see my old ones in my sig for now.
