Amazon running a trade-in program for old Kindles
« on: May 24, 2017, 12:22:53 AM »
Hi Folks

It appears The Mighty 'Zon is doing a trade-in program for old Kindles. In the link below, you can find out what devices qualify. Apparently, once your device is accepted, they'll give you a gift card PLUS a $20 credit line towards a new Kindle of your choice.

https://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Trade-In/b?ie=UTF8&node=10825010011

I'm not exactly sure if this is new or not. I login into Amazon almost daily to see new deals and whatnot, but I had never seen the Kindle trade-in program banner until this evening.

Happy Reading,
Your Favorite Shellfish.

They've had it for a while.  They usually advertise it when there's a good deal going on. :D. I'll have to check!

I like the program, very easy to use.

Be sure. To read the fine print in the credit towards a new Kindle, it hasn't included the Oasis in the past.  *off to check*

EDIT:  oooh, it does include the Oasis.  Hmmmm...  I wonder if this is harbingers of a new Kindle coming out. Hmmmm....

I used the program myself a few months ago and it was super easy.

I love my Voyage, but I'm eagerly hoping there's something new coming soon. Just because... you know... new things.

if it were possible I'd trade this old DX for a new DX.  It goes where I go.  Going to visit the Komodo Dragons, might have to beat one with it as I run.

I have several older kindles that I no longer use. Can I turn them all in for the credits towards one new kindle?

Steve,
You'll have to check the trade in items on Amazon to see if your devices qualify but yes, you can send them all in. I did this a couple of years ago. I sent in three Kindles and used the credit to purchase the Voyage.

Basically, if they'll take 'em, they give you credit via Amazon GC. So you can use it for anything. With the special promotion, they give an extra amount that you can only use to buy a kindle. I'm not sure if they'll give you $20 per kindle you trade in and let you add them together to buy ONE new device -- I sort of think NOT, but the basic trade in amount has no restrictions, as far as I can tell.

Note that, for older devices, you don't get as much credit as there's no re-sale value to them. But it looks like they list pretty much every 6" model they've sold from the 3rd gen 'keyboard' on. They do NOT list the first and second gen kindles as available for trade in, nor do they list the DX.

I looked up my kindle keyboard and the trade amount was very low, around $10 I think : (

Be nice if the "Your Devices" matched the trade-in information.  Big PITA to try and figure out what you can trade. >:(

I'm thinking about trading in my Voyage for an Oasis. The Voyage is fine for reading, but I cannot read the titles on the home screen even with my glasses. It's very frustrating.

How is the Oasis home screen?

Never mind. Not for that price.

Does Amazon want the USB cord along with the Kindle for trade-in?   Also, do you just reset device and deregister from Amazon?

I generally send back whatever came with it . . . . but I don't know that they really care about USB wires.

Yes: do a reset to factory and make sure it is no longer registered to your account. Turn it all the way off and send it back.

So it is showing that my Voyage would get $65. So does that mean I would get the $65 plus a $20 credit toward a new kindle ($85 total). If so that is making the new Oasis even more tempting  ;D

Yes, both. Well, you'd get the $65 depending on condition. I traded in my Voyage last week and I was worried that I wouldn't get the full amount since the screen had a few tiny pin holes. Got a $65 gift card though and the $20 credit was in my shopping cart.  :)

Would someone who did the trade-in with a Kindle please let me know how it went?

I sent in my Voyage, and Amazon received it this past Monday morning (per UPS), but I have received nothing from Amazon. Shouldn't I get a message telling me how much of a credit they're giving with gift card info to fill in when I next buy? I just checked, and the Voyage is no longer shown in my account as one of my devices, but if I go through the purchase procedure for a new Oasis (which is why I'm doing this), there's no sign of the extra $20 credit or a credit for the Voyage or anything.

Am I being impatient, or is it time to contact Amazon and ask what's going on?

When you sent your device in you should have received an email with a link to check your status. If you don't have that go to the trade in store and on that page you'll see a link to check your status.

Thanks, Lizzarddance, I never read that far down on the email I got when I wanted to trade it - just printed the label and sent the thing.

It says, "Item received and being appraised," or something like that. It doesn't seem it would take them this long to see it's in great shape. If they don't admit it's worth the $65, it will be the last time I ever trade anything in.

Ellenoc I'm sure you'll receive the full value. I've sent in several Kindles before and always got the full price. There was only one time that they sent it back because I sent in a model that wasn't available for trade in.

You should get something soon.  I recently traded my Voyage in & got full value. They received it on Monday 10/16 and I got received an email about the gift card on Friday 10/20.

I whined 24 hours too soon. Got the email about the trade today, and yes, I did get the full $65, plus the $20, so I went ahead and ordered a new 7" Oasis. At last.

Does anyone know if this is available in the UK - interested in getting the oasis but don't want to pay full price (already have a K3 and a paper white)
