Unable to Register

I am unable to register my kindle.

Recently my kindle starting giving me this message every time I try to open a book....

Invalid Item

This item is protected with DRM and cannot be read on your Fire.
Please remove the item from your device and download it again or purchase a copy from the Kindle store.


This happens with all of the downloaded books from BookBub. Most of them are purchased books (not freebies).

On a different forum someone suggested to delete the books and re-download them.

That didn't work at all.

So I "reset to factory defaults"

Well, that cleared every thing off my kindle.

I tried starting from scratch.

I connected with my wireless system.

Now I am unable to register.

First it tells me that there is no internet connection.

But when I check, my kindle shows that I have a clear connection.

Sometimes it tells me that it's unable to verify my account.

This is all with my Kindle (5th generation)

I don't know what to do next, (outside of throwing it into my shop stove).

What now?

Sorry you've been having problems! 

Could you clarify the Kindle you are using?  You mention both a Fire and a 5th gen Kindle?  Is it both?

The usual things to try:

Restart -- not just turn off and on but hold the button for an extended period until it re-boots itself

Toggle wifi -- turn it off then back on. Forget the connection and then re-enter it.

Check your registration both via the device AND on your account at Amazon -- clear both and try again. (If you have more than one account, be sure you're registering to the account from which you want to get the books.)

With a device purchased from Amazon, one of those should work; if not you should contact them. They should be able to figure out the problem and, if it's a fault with a device still under warranty, they'll replace it.

So my next question is: Where did you get it?

If you did NOT buy it from Amazon, the problem could be that it's already registered to someone else's account and/or it's been reported as lost/stolen. That will prevent you from registering a device. And if you can't register the device, Amazon won't let you download content from the Zon to the device; even stuff you own.

OK  I'll try the various suggestions.

About the registration.
I have had the fire for six or seven months.  I registered it when I got it.
It's been working great until the previous mentioned problems.

I just can't figure out why I can't re-register.
