AI Generates Romance Titles
« on: August 11, 2017, 11:08:21 AM »
This came across my dashboard and thought it was too delightful not to share.  A computational scientist plugged in 20,000 Harlequin romance titles into an AI computer to see what it would do.  They are glorious.

https://medium.com/@andronovhopf/romance-novels-generated-by-artificial-intelligence-1b31d9c872b2

My favorites include:
  • Missingbroom Bride
  • The English Millionaire Investigator
  • Mistress Man's Baby
  • Baby Barbarian
  • Dear Dr. High-Kungly Seductive Mistake
  • Christmas Pregnant Paradise
  • Pregnant Cow

I think our jobs being taken over by robots might be safe for a few more years.

This is great - it's hard to choose just a few, but I like My, Hot Doctor because of the comma, and Falling for her Doorstep for the mental image.

And what about such classics as The Man for Dr. Husband, Midwife Cowpoke and Glord in the Dark (though I don't know whether the last one is even legal;-) :o

Just a few of the books I have translated (English <-> German)

Everything except the Pregnant Cow made a weird sort of sense. I just can't remember any Harlequins that had cows in the title?

The comma TOTALLY makes it!  I'm also fond of "Dangerously! Seduction" for the exclamation point.

I have to wonder what Crassion is and whether there's a cure for it.

Half of them read like foreign titles run through a translator.  Even the "author" names are 'off.'

Although, I have to say, Inheritance Sex sounds like a pretty reasonable book.   :P

They all sound like movies Asylum Studios (makers of Sharknado) would produce.

That or anime titles. Secret Secret Baby is probably an alternate universe's Japanese Spy Kids...

This is gold!

I'm glad we're safe -- though Never Happened and Undercover Movercum are my favorites. What is a "movercum"? Something dirty? Or something so futuristic, we mere mortals haven't imagined it yet?

Thank you for the laugh! I needed it tonight.

Don't think the same can't be done for epic fantasy or space opera.

I'm totally writing The Man For Dr. Husband unless some other gay marriage of convenience fan has snagged it already.

Those totally make me LOL because it makes you realise how formulaic titles are, and also the price of ignoring the established format. I think we don't talk about titles enough in categorising our books. This makes me realise how important it is.

Not really AI, they clearly fed in lots of existing titles and had them mixed and mashed. Of the Fantasy Title Generator I really like these:

The Ancient Lamp
Choice of Nothing
Knight in the Boy
The Tattoo's Enemy
The River's Handshake

I built one rather like the two fantasy ones above. Not AI, but a random speculative fiction title generator with a degree of logic so that it generates titles to a number of formats. It's not that different from the AI version in its results, if the ones in the article are in any way typical: some usable ones mixed with a lot of bonkers titles. Which suggests that AI is overrated, or it needs a much, much larger set of results to learn title conventions.

The last 10 examples from mine, unedited:

Dame Unicorn Against The Cold Vendetta
Twilight Of The Person
Fantastic Machines Wars
King Troll Against The Curious Smith
Noir Priestess
Monster And The Zombie Ghost
Doctor Elemental And The Enigma Of The Broken Institute
Emperor Vampire Hides From The Bad River
The Amazing Beast
Raising Fall
