Just got this email (no idea why, I already have a publishing account there)

Dear prospective partner,
You previously asked that we let you know when the Google Play Books Partner Program started taking new sign-ups. That time has arrived!

We are inviting a limited number of new publishers to sign up for the program, including you. To get started, create a Google Play Books Partner Center account using this single-use link (You will be prompted to sign in with a Google Account):

We've been working behind-the-scenes to improve the Google Play Books experience. Your use of the platform as a new partner will provide valuable input as we test our improvements.

We suggest you review the Publisher Content Policies for Google Play Books to ensure your content conforms to our policies. You will also be asked to accept the Google Books Partner Program Standard Terms and Conditions when you sign up for an account.

If you have any questions, check out our Books Partner Program Help Center. To get in touch, click Contact us in the Help Center.

We look forward to partnering with you and making your books available to millions of readers worldwide!

Regards,
The Google Play Books Support Team

I sent an email through their contact us page. Is there a better email to use?

Highly doubtful I'll get a response, considering I'm in KU right now, and I'm willing to bet they're not actually taking 'a limited number of sign ups' but that they're just inviting you, but always worth a shot.

Honestly, you're not missing much. There have been no improvements, not that I can see, anyway. Besides, they can make all the improvements they want to the general functioning of the platform, but it won't make a spot of difference if they don't have the numbers (customers). I can say without a shadow of a doubt, in my genre at least, they just don't have the numbers.

I got on the wait list quite awhile back (a year ago?). I can't remember exactly how I got to the link, but I found a "live chat" link for Google Play customer support. The person I chatted with added me to the waiting list. I just got the invitation email a few days ago and was able to create an account. Maybe it's a sign that they really are starting to open back up...

I'm encouraged by it. I've made an astonishing amount of income from selling on GP.

The hope is a subscription program to rival KU.

But then wouldn't you have to decide if you wanted to be in KU or the Google version. Because you could only be in one.

For those unfamiliar with Google Play who get invited to join note the following:

1. 20% is the minimum preview you can set (10% most everywhere else)
2. Sections of your book appear in Google Books even if ebook only (similar to a print book from Creatspace on Amazon)
3. Above about $1.99 your book will be discounted. Google pay you your full dues but other retailers won't if they price match.

If you are going to jump in...
Do, do, do read this post by TK on everything you need to know on how to figure out everything about the weirdness that is 'Google Play' for ebooks. (Save a local copy to reference too , just in case!):

I've used that post too. It hasn't been updated since March 2014, and I hope all of it is still current and relevant.

It mostly is, I just had to put a price of $22.99 on a book to get a price on Google of $13.79 which is what Amazon is price matching.... I was trying to get $14.99.

That's astounding (and good for you!) that you can charge $14.99 for an ebook. Which one is it? Does it still hold true that Google Play readers are less price-conscious?

I sell a fair amount of books through Google, enough to make up for the hassle of navigating their site (which is awful, really).

I have a list of prices especially for Google, to cover their discounting, e.g. $6.45 = $4.97. I don't fine-tune excessively for fear of triggering a markdown on Amazon. (That book and many others are $4.95 on Amazon and elsewhere.)
