Science Fiction and Fantasy Promotion Site: READSFF.COM
« on: September 12, 2017, 10:52:58 AM »
Hey everyone,
Alright, so I'm trying to spool something up that will be VERY genre specific to science fiction and fantasy authors and readers. There are some great places like book bub, book barbarian, fussy librarian, etc. But I wanted to set up a website where I could combine both the 99c/KDP Select Promo/Permafree/Rafflecopter/Amazon Giveaways/and the like.

The target demographic is the reading portion of the Fanboy/girl demographic. I'm hoping to attract both people looking to promote scifi book related stuff but also lootcrate giveaway promotions, etc.

Basicly an overdose of the multiple methods we are using to give away our books.

For next few months I want to run it for free, in the hopes of working out the kinks. This means, although it's almost out of beta testing, anyone who submits their books to the site will get to promo them for free.

Sound good?
Check out the page here (There's only place holder info for now)
http://www.ReadSff.Com

Then wander over and submit your book for free on our super secret page. Use the promo code KBOARDS2017
http://www.readsff.com/authors/

Even if you don't sign up. Tell me what you think about the idea? What you would see improved, etc.

I think genre-specific sites for promotion are a great idea. But you seem to be doing what all the book sites do, focusing on PRICE over CHOICE. Your list of categories is comprised of half bargain basement stuff. People can already find free and cheap on Amazon without help. Give readers a place to find stuff they want to read and don't fixate on price.

If you are going to build a GENRE site, you need to attract GENRE readers. Genre readers don't need help finding cheap books. They need help finding books that actually belong in their genre.

There are other ways to sell books beyond giving them away for next to nothing. I would LOVE to see a site that just shares news about new spec fiction books, with previews and interviews and such. I think readers would be into that as well.

I'm with Bards and Sages, but I'd go one step further - subgenres.

I read fantasy, but not assassins and not world-at-war and it's got to have magic and...I hate wading through all the stuff on Amazon that doesn't belong in various categories.

I read science fiction but not military and not evil empire and...same complaint.

If I knew you had REAL subgenres, I'd visit the site all the time to find new authors. And I would be willing to pay more than 99c for a book. And as an author, I'd be happy to pay to list my book/series.

I just wanted to pop in and add my vote behind what Bards and Sages was saying. As a writer and reader I can get cheap books anywhere, it would be really nice to see marketing focused towards the genre and not the price point.

I'm with what's been said above.

I'd love to have somewhere to find new SFF with clean and clear subgenres. I'm so tired of wading through the PNR in UF and all of the rest of the muddy waters. Having a place to reliably discover new authors writing things I like and want would be fantastic.

Wow. A few signups already.
I'll start posting them tonight.

As for people's thoughts about it being a genre specific site. Oh, yes I agree. It's fifty percent of why I am doing this. I'm a nerd. I love books in the Scifi genre. Mostly I am hoping to create a place where SFF readers can come and browse and find some good content.

Originally I was hesitant to even mix Scifi and fantasy together but I believe I can make it easy for people to search. That's mostly why I split up the category and the tags.

Thanks for the support everyone. I'll make sure I keep you in the loop.

I tried to sign up but I'm stumped by the anti-spam line. There isn't an image or anything, but it won't take it if I leave it empty.

"I'm with Bards and Sages, but I'd go one step further - subgenres."

I'm with B&S and Alice...sub-genre's, please! I end up blocking the messages from most of the book promo sites I've signed up for because all I get are genre's I'm not interested in or, in some cases, flat out can't stand. If I could get promo's and ads for new books based on key-words or similar filtering and I'd be delighted to see those mailings. If this site(s) already exist then I haven't seen them yet.

Is your goal to provide a curated library, or will writers get to put whatever tags they want on their books? If curated, will you have quality standards, or just some method for determining correct sub-genres. When you do get more books, how will they be sorted? I mean, if a reader brings up all the books tagged Epic Fantasy, who's at the top?

Sorry, was fiddling with the input. Without getting too techy, there is a antispam component that is not working. I've removed it for now.
This is why I'm not even attempting to ask anything for the service.

Since (at this time) your responsible for your key words. A human will determine the subcategory as best they can. But your keywords also act as a secondary search method. Ie. Robots when clicked will give you all robot books. But it will be under the subgenre for post apocalyptic books if your robot lives in a post human wasteland.

Still working on the process. If you see something you want/need, just mention it, and I will at least consider how I am doing things. I want to make sure I am offer not only a way for an author to promote their book, but also a quality experience for a reader.

Are you advocating for maybe more of a curated list?

Good idea, Neil. Since most promo sites are multi-genre, it's good to see one that's for science fiction and fantasy only. Though it would be great if there was also an option for books that are not free, 99 cents or reduced.

That's close to what we're trying to do with the Speculative Fiction Showcase. But there's always room for more sites.

I will be adding this feature in as well. I want to make sure that the readers have good quality content, so that it will attract them. And good quality isn't always on sale.

Thanks everyone for being patient. I have been changing the back end to streamline how submissions work. The intent is to minimize the amount of time I am away from my own writing.

The page has been updated, and I am waiting on some final tweaks so that I can put in a date time of the deal.

There's now a better category selection process.

Please don't mind the dust. Still tweaking. :)

Lorri,
Thanks for the submission and the heads up about the 'blank' looking form.
I am working to parse out the meta data so that it shows a nice clean button for your (and everyone elses) book.
I saw both of your attempts, but I have to get a better plugin for the website (I'll be wrangling with that problem tonight).
Just the consequences of website development.

Thanks for being patient.

I'm with Bards and Sages. There are plenty of free e-books everywhere you turn. Up it to $1.99 and I am with you. The content of so many sci-fi fantasy books is so amateurish. Hoping one of your sub-genres is dystopian.

dystopian sounds grim but actually fun abounds
