What happened to the Categories???
« on: October 10, 2017, 02:20:32 PM »
So, you know how you scroll to the bottom of your product page and there would always be a list of ALL the categories your book was in, not just the top three?

I can't find it.

Is it gone???

Is it just me?

I just checked two of my books and they are still there for me. Do you have a link so I can check and see if I can see yours? Maybe something up with your device??

Any of the books in my profile.

The categories under the bestseller rank are there. It's the extended list at the bottom I'm not seeing. Checked with Chrome and IE.

I checked the first two and they're there. Quite a few of them, too, like 19 or 20.

Gone for me too. Really hope it's temporary - that was a useful piece of information.

Thanks. This is so weird.

My co-writer just screencapped them for me. But I can't see them at all.  :(

OMG - Tara -

Thank you! Thought I was going nuts.

And yes... very useful. Which is how I came to notice mine are missing.

I've rebooted, etc. Still can't find them.

If it weren't for TaraCrescent - I'd really think I'd lost it.

Hopefully it will right itself soon.

Could be A/B testing.  :o I wouldn't like to see the categories gone from the pages. Anything else different that you can see?

Noooo.... but I could easily overlook something. I've been having them update my categories on a few books, so I was focused on that.

It they don't put them back, how will we know where we appear? Plus... that was an easy click to the poplist for each category.

I use them as a reader but I can imagine a scenario where they'd want them gone, such as if they're trying to push readers in one direction or another from the book page.

But I would assume it's just a glitch because it really doesn't make a lot of sense to get rid of them. :)

You are not alone IreneP!
All of my categories are gone on my brand new pre-order book, for unknown reasons.
The categories are still there on my old titles, though. I've no clue what's going on in the Amazon Goblin Factory.

All there on the books I clicked, except for Infamous which is a 404. Probably A/B testing.

Figured it out (maybe).

They were gone on all my books and all other books on zon. I'm canadian and switched over to .ca site and they are all there. Switched to UK and they are not there.

So for some reason if you're visiting US zon from another country those cats don't show. If you visit your country zon site, you'll see them. Or at least I'm assuming that's what's going on given people are saying they can see the US lists while some cannot (probably because they are US folks and others are not).

It would be interesting to see if they visit say the Canadian store whether they then no longer see them.

Ugh - I'm in the US and can't see the US categories.

If I go to the UK, I see them.

Checking all the sites, some are there, some are not. So.... Yeah, it's obviously not consistent across all sites.

Please let them not take this away  :(

Ohhh that's really not good then. That means they are rolling out this change on the US site first, and will push it to the international sites later.

hmmm, very odd change to make to the site. Maybe it's just a temporary glitch.

OR perhaps it's an effort to address the mind-boggling bullchit of cat stuffing authors are doing; reducing it down to three primary cats the way the other vendors do.

If someone is currently ranking high enough (top 100 sub cats) and knows what their list of sub cats were (that are now gone) they could go and check to see if their books are still technically in those sub cats (ie. are the cats simply not visible, or have the books been removed from those cats also).

I know many will hate it, but if zon reduces people to just three cats I actually think that's a great change. Primarily because it means they realize their store if a bloody mess and they have to clean it up. Take away the toys from the gamers as much as possible I say.

Ros - thanks for the heads-up on Infamous.  S&S repubbed it again and there's no way I'll every find all the links which need updating  ::)

Seneca - I hear what you are saying about the stuffing, but Amazon limits to 10 categories and I could actually pick more for some of my books. Legitimate ones. Unlike other book stores, Amazon breaks down some of the larger categories in a lot of more targetted sub-categories. So I can be in vampire paranormal romance and ghost paranormal  romance and gay romance, for example. On a lot of sites, all those would just be "romance."  Having the extra categories is really a benefit to readers who want to be specific in their choices as well as authors who want to get their books found by the right audience.

Update: I republished my novel this morning and at the moment it's in pre-order publishing.
I got all my categories back in the UK (plus a couple of extra), but they reshuffled the categories for me (?)

Before my categories disappeared I was in 3 categories, but now I'm in 11...
I still have Romance > Gay Romance,  but I lost Historical Romance > Victorian.
On the other hand, I got a whole bunch of Erotica categories as a bonus.
No categories in the US shows up, but they might catch up later on with a little bit of luck.

I hear ya. And ya, cats used properly are a huge benefit and multiple listings make sense. Technically zon should curate their cats somehow. But they can't/don't.

The whole SP industry is basically coming down to "and this is why we can't have nice things". hehe.

I mean, there are authors who purposely add elements into the story just so they can list in a cat. Let's toss an alien, a military guy, a gay werewolf, a spaceship, a space vampire, some magic blended with tech... and there we go, we can now list in every single category on zon.

It's gotten ridiculous if you ask me. SO while it might hurt some authors, the store as whole would benefit to forcing authors to limit themselves to 3-5 categories.

Update 2:
The categories never showed at Amazon.com, so I emailed KDP and pointed out the problem and they added all my categories directly.
(A+ to KDP for their quick reply and help!)

Thank you so much IreneP for starting this thread, I never even realised that my categories were gone!

I saw them yesterday when this thread started, but they're gone for me now, too. For a minute I thought it might be cause I wasnt logged in, but once I logged in to Amazon they were/are still gone.
ETA- I can see them on my phone, just not on the laptop.

I just checked, and I'm only seeing the main three categories, not any extended categories anywhere. I'm using Firefox on Win7.

I emailed them

They got back and told me to clear my cache and try again. That worked. I now see them.
