The WHEEL OF FIRE series (space opera)
« on: October 11, 2017, 09:30:26 PM »
Hostile Planet (Wheel of Fire, #1)

Sergeant Jerry Harper left the military nine years ago. The four Breeds of humanity are at peace, and he's just a landscaper now. He spends his days mowing lawns and his nights playing gigs with his band. Civilian life in the Wheel of Fire galaxy is quiet and steady, and that's the way he likes it.

That steady life is interrupted when a colonel from military intelligence shows up. Jerry's old war buddy, Brandon Woods, has gone missing, and the colonel is assembling a motley group of rescuers. He wants Jerry to join the team.

Jerry owes Brandon his life, so he agrees to help. He travels to another planet and soon finds himself mired in interstellar politics. There's something psychological going on, too, a legacy of his last battle nine years ago. Finding Brandon is challenging enough by itself, but now those secrets from the past threaten to drive Jerry insane. He hopes he can grab his friend and get out without attracting too much attention, and he certainly doesn't want to risk starting another Breed war. But he's on a hostile planet now, and it won't give Brandon up without a fight.

Mind Games (Wheel of Fire, #2)

Sergeant Jerry Harper recently caused an interstellar incident. As a result, tensions are high, and the Reliants of the Mentarchy have offered to host a conference to settle the matter peacefully. Jerry is ordered by his government to attend the talks and testify. He travels with the rest of the Agrarian diplomatic delegation to the planet Cortex, home of the Mentarch.

Cortex is supposed to be neutral ground, but that changes when an assassin targets the Agrarians. Jerry chases the shooter, but the pursuer quickly becomes the pursued, and he's forced to go on the run. While Jerry's wandering in the wilderness, the Mentarch activates its anti-gravity jammer, blockading space travel. The Agrarian delegates are now stuck on the planet, and Jerry is the only one in a position to do anything about it. He's tasked with disabling the jammer.

Jerry has no idea how he's going to do it, but he sets out anyway. Along the way, he starts to get a strange feeling about Cortex, some weird interaction between the planet and his psychic gift. He's not sure what's going on, but he suspects the Mentarch is up to something. Jerry must find a way to disable the jammer while also dealing with the Mentarch's mind games. And if he wants to get his people off Cortex alive, he must do it before the place turns into a war zone.

The inspiration for the Wheel of Fire galaxy came from the real-life Hoag's Object.

The hero of the Wheel of Fire series is Sergeant Jerry Harper, a former infantry soldier.  Discharged from the military nine years ago, he's now a landscaper and an amateur musician.

In the beginning, the Breeder genetically engineered the four Breeds of humanity: Paragons, Felids, Agrarians, and Reliants.  Sometimes the Breeds get along.  Other times, not so much.

Not everyone believes in the Breeder.  Of those who do, the most fervent are the Harowaith assassin-monks.  If you encounter a Harowaith, you'd be wise to avoid saying anything blasphemous where he can hear.

When a plasma pistol or rifle is fired, the plasma bolt is unstable when it leaves the muzzle.  It stabilizes during flight.  The distance it travels before stabilizing is considered the weapon's minimum range.  An unstable plasma bolt can still kill an unshielded man, but it won't harm a man wearing an energy shield.  In that case, the bolt will shatter without depleting the shield.  In battle, soldiers from both sides are almost always shielded.  If they are under each other's minimum range, then plasma weapons become useless.  This is where swords and bayonets come into play.

Agrarian military units are organized by both planet and county-level political divisions.  During the Claim War, Sergeant Jerry Harper served alongside men from his home county.  Some of them were his distant relatives.

During the Claim War, each of the four Breeds laid claim to the planet known as Blackshoals.  It's an ocean planet with only a few islands of volcanic rock, but it's rich in Chevenite, the mineral that makes anti-gravity engines and cross-space travel possible.  The Agrarians were the last Breed to control the main island.  Then something... strange... occurred, and landing on the planet has been impossible ever since.  It remains uninhabited to this day.

In combat, sword fights are rarely elegant.  The ground is often uneven and slippery due to blood, and one is constantly bumped into by other soldiers and distracted by plasma bolts shattering on shields.  Sometimes it takes all a combatant's concentration just to keep from falling down.

Is there life outside the Veil?  The Wheel of Fire's philosophers have debated the matter for eons.

Most Homesteaders are tenants, not land owners.  Jerry Harper's landlady is a Reliant, a rarity on Homestead.

It takes exactly three days to travel anywhere via cross-space.  The galaxy's scientists have no explanation for it, and the mechanics of cross-space are still largely a mystery.

The Reliants of the Mentarchy are controlled telepathically by their Mentarch.  Everything they do, whether it's getting dressed, walking down the street, or having sex, is orchestrated by the Mentarch.

The Ealdorman of Homestead is sort of like the chief executive of the planet's government.  The Ealdorman at the time of this story is Phillip Brewer, and he represents Homestead in the Agrarian Commonwealth.
