Well, this time I read a whopping 1 book out of the selections.

Unfortunately, the genres I read are not as popular as the ones that seem to win the categories. That's ok though.

I'd read one . . . but I have one more on my 'to read' list -- the one by Louise Penny which I know will be outstanding, so I voted for it even though I've not read it yet.

I also have the Neil deGrasse Tyson book on my kindle -- I should read it to decide if I should vote for it in its category.

Also noticed that Andy Wier's latest was on the list for Sci Fi -- it's not even released for another week! I liked The Martian but I'm not paying $14 for the new one -- hope it'll be in one of my Libraries.

Huh, I didn't even look into the Sci Fi list, as I don't read that genre. Unless its Sci Fi romance and then I would expect it to be under romance. Is that what that series is considered? I read 2 only so far, but haven't really thought about what genre it is. I don't even recall now what I shelved it at on goodreads.
eta: Well, I did file it under Sci fi, but also mystery. I didn't know where to put it. But I still wouldn't normally look into the SF category.

I've read 2 from MYSTERY & THRILLER, 1 from FANTASY, 3 from ROMANCE & 2 from YOUNG ADULT FANTASY & SCIENCE FICTION.

I've only voted for books I've read so far, but I sometimes vote for books by authors I read before and enjoyed. There are a good many on my tbr pile, but there's no way I'll get to them this year.

I saw that . . . . but I won't vote for it as I never did read it because they never did fix the kindle formatting.

The whole world of book publishing/promoting is so new to me..

I guess that's up to you. If the book has already been nominated, go for it. If you are writing it in, I personally think that's a bit slimy.

GR is for READERS so READERS are supposed to vote on books they honestly think are the best in various categories. It's not scientific at all, of course -- purely a popularity contest. Though at least each GR member only gets one vote.

As is usual, there are a fair number of those books haven't even been released yet, so it makes the whole process...interesting.

yeah . . . . that is weird. I'm not sure I noticed it in previous years, but they probably did it.

I guess that well pushed ARCs make a big dent when it comes to garnering nominations, but it does strike as a little odd when you see books making the cut before even hitting the shelves.

Wow, I've actually read two of the books this year.

I agree about the yet to be released books. In fact, I would say it makes more sense to only include books which have been released for at least six months, so that enough people can have read them to have an opinion on them, otherwise they should be held over till next year's vote. I suspect a lot of people will vote for favourite authors, based on previous books, even when they haven't yet read the book on the voting list. For example, I will at some point read Andy Weir's new book and, based on how much I loved The Martian, I expect to enjoy it but I'm not voting for the new one when it hasn't even been released yet.

I wonder how they choose the initial books to go onto the list - is it based on the books listed by members or just chosen based on the preferences of the people who run Goodreads, or maybe even just chosen randomly?

I suspect it's a combination of algorithms -- GR data mines for how many people have a book marked 'read' or 'want to read' -- as well as some human input from major players on GR. And, in the very first round -- which closed last Saturday, regular GR members can write in their choices.

Last year, for instance, Bruce Springsteen's autobiography was not included in the first round and I wrote it in. It ended up being included in the next round. I suspect I'm not the only one who wrote it in.

Problem for me is, I don't keep track of when books I've read were first published, and I'm often reading things that were published a while back but they've only just come up for me at the library, or the price has gone down to where I'm willing to pay. So to figure out if books I read this year that I really liked were published this year is, frankly, too much work. $:-\$

Both of the books I've actually read made it through to the final, which is amazing enough in itself.

I just went back and looked at the results for last year. I've never heard of either the book or even the author that won. In fact, as far as I can tell, I've only ever heard of one author in the top twenty - and I've never read any of her books. Clearly, my taste in books doesn't seem to match the popular taste. Or maybe there are just so many books out there and the voting list is so relatively small that it's a mathematical thing that you're only likely to have come across a small proportion of them.

I'll be interested to see who wins this year.

I have learned that my taste is often not what the mainstream touts as 'latest and greatest'. For example, Oprah Winfrey is always promoting books she just loves . . and of course it gives a huge book to any author who catches her fancy 'cause she tells everyone and so many people listen. I've learned, however, the few times I've read one of the books she recommends (or sometimes I'd tried it before she found it and sent it to best seller lists) I find them impossible to finish. Just absolutely not even my thing a little bit. So, her 'recommended' list works for me because I know I shouldn't even bother to try anything she likes.

These lists always remind me of books I wanted to read but haven't picked up yet. Sometimes I find new things, too, but usually it's more like, "Oh, yeah, I meant to pick up Hunger by Roxanne Gay and forgot to do that. (adds to list)"
