New update

For new Oasis, O2 this enables you to disable the touch screen. I am really really liking this. Access from the book menu and it stays off until you either turn off the kindle with the power button or it goes asleep. Its temporary, then you have to turn it off again. Its nice to grab it anywhere, lay a finger, brush something off.

All the kindles seem to have this update numbers, but not that one feature of the touchscreen turnoff. Just general fixes.

So touchscreen disable is only for the new Oasis.

There is one other update that is just for the Kindle 8th generation. The newest of the kindles without light. It gets Audible now, what the Oasis2 already has. Because that kindle has bluetooth built in. I don't think any other kindles have that.

eta: spoke to soon, audible also for the O1, old oasis.

That is an awesome update. Agree with you derek87, would love to have that option on the Oasis 6".

As an aside fun fact for those of you that will eventually want to customize your new Oasis with screensavers and fonts, the Jailbreak survives 5.9.2.0.1 (though you had to Jailbreak at 5.9.0.5.1 before 5.9.2) if you do it manually. The amazing people at Mobilereads are hard at work getting those add ons ready. ;)

Besides the bold font options in the recent update, this disable touchscreen is one of the best features they added yet. And I didn't know I needed it. I knew I wanted bolder fonts. But now that I can disable touch, I can put my fingers on the screen again, like I did on a paperbook and my older kindles. I can grab it any way I like it and don't constantly open the menu up. This wont work well if you use notes, highlights or such things a lot. But I read a large chunk of book last night and it felt even more like a book. No menu, no checking the batter constantly, I just read. And my  hands were all over the screen.  ;D

I will try to use the touch screen option but many times, depending on how I'm holding the Oasis, I touch the screen to turn the page.
What is really annoying to me is the reading progress menu.  I usually want to know how many pages to the end of the chapter.  However, many times this selection changes to end of book or something else.  Drives me crazy as I have to reset the end of chapter choice.

So how do you get to the Home screen with the touch turned off?

You can't. You can only page with the buttons while its activated. It goes back to normal if if falls asleep or if you open and close the cover. Or click the power button off and on.

And THIS is why I'd like a dedicated physical home button. Then you could set touch off and leave it off until you needed to do something else besides turn pages. :)

Turning off touch sounds good in theory. I'd love to get away from accidental page turns and bringing up Settings. I'll try it, but at a guess I use the dictionary and look up words often enough it won't work for me.

What do you do have to do to disable touch?

I cannot say that such a feature appeals to me at all. I am constantly touching the screen to look things up, visit XRay etc. In fact I would be in favor of using touch to do _more_ than it does now via various gestures. I think it would drive me crazy not being able to do anything other than to turn pages, and toggling power button just seems inelegant.

It is curious that the feature did not come to Oasis 1 and Voyage.

Yeah . . . I honestly don't think I'll really turn off touch at all . . . . I don't have issues with accidental page turns or anything like that. But I can see it being very useful for someone with, say, animals or small children. Kids grab things, and animals -- cats, especially -- don't much care where they put their paws. :D  It would probably also be good for older folks who maybe don't have quite the manual dexterity and find themselves accidentally brushing the screen when they don't mean to. I hope it's a pretty quick toggle setting because, as you note, it would make using the dictionary feature kind of a pain. :(

I had the Kindle Keyboard and one of the page buttons broke. I'm not a fan of mechanical buttons. New technology for Luddites makes no sense.

regarding disabling touch...

i got a call from Amazon the other day after i left my lackluster review concerning the quality assurance issue of going through 5 Oasis devices before i found one that was acceptable. when asked about features i would like to see, i said i would like to see different toggles to turn on/off any of the following three methods of page turning:

- tap
- page turning buttons
- swiping to turn pages

in reality, the last one is not  very interesting to me, but since having the Oasis, i have accidentally tapped the screen or hit a page turning button when unintended and it would be nice to be able to disable one of the first two options so one could either grip the device without worrying about page turning buttons being accidentally hit, or grip the device slightly onto the screen without accidentally turning pages.

???

I think I'm insulted? ??? :o

Or maybe just confused. ::) :D

Anyway . . . . . I think a single dedicated home button would be nice, as nice as physical page turn buttons, but that kindles don't have it is obviously not a deal breaker.

So it is apparently an option found on the 3-dot menu. I still think it is a very weird feature. Normally minimalism appeals to me but this seems more like starvation.

My MIL has a basic Kindle - before they had touch screens.
She reads by holding it in one hand and using the other to press the page turn buttons.  But the first hand is grabbing the Kindle right in the middle of the screen.  I'm not sure how/why she does it that way, but when we looked into getting a newer one (front-lit) for her, we had to give it up because she couldn't adjust her holding method.

I like the touch screen disable feature as I have a very large vocabulary and rarely need to look up a word, particularly in a fiction book.  I more commonly swear at the spelling and homophone misuse errors.  Also I still regularly use the Kindle DX and Kindle 4/5.  They of course do not have touch screens.  I wish Amazon made a 300 DPI non-touch screen modern e-reader or one that enabled the touch screen for keyboard access only as the keyboard on the K4/K5 is a royal PITA!

I had to manually update my Oasis, as per usual with Amazon kindle updates. I'm excited to be able to listen to my audiobook versions of books while reading them. I didn't realize that Oasis1 had bluetooth

For some reason, I thought this update brought white on black to the Oasis 1.  No?   Am I going in circles and missing it right in front of my face?

For the 2017 Oasis, it adds the 'disable touch screen' option.

For the 2016 Oasis, it adds audible file support.

For the Voyage all it lists is general improvements and performance enhancements.

All 3 use the same version number: 5.9.2.0.1

Thanks Ann.

I wonder why they're withholding the ability.    I could get irritated if I thought about it too much.

Indeed, Koi. Add disabling the touch for the Oasis 6" too. That seems like a vital feature.

5.9.2.0.1 is available for the Paperwhite 6th and 7th generations as well, although without the disable touchscreen option, thank goodness.  :D

I'm not sure why you say that. It's an option, not a requirement. It may not be something I'll use but I don't see any reason to dis the Zon for offering it. Clearly there are people who've asked for it, or they wouldn't have made it part of the OS.
