Strange chars on Oasis 2017 page

I'm seeing chars (unrelated to the book) occasionally in the books I'm reading. This is not related to the book, it happens on every book I've read.
The word 'highlighters' will appear between lines of the book at a shade of grey and smaller text size. It appears at random throughout the book.

Sample:
I have often been asked how we made the flint
   3 highlighters
stone arrow spikes, and I will here endeavor to ex-
                                                       4 highlighters
plain the process: We threw a large flint stone, from
.........

You have 'popular highlights' turned on . . . which isn't surprising as the devices come with it on by default.

You can turn it off via settings . . . not sure exactly where (and I don't happen to have a kindle to hand at the moment) but explore and you'll find it. I think it's reading options?

Thanks for the info. I found 'popular highlights' and turned it off.
