Do you hear your characters speak?
« on: June 07, 2018, 08:52:24 PM »
Do your characters ever become so real to you that, in your mind, you can actually hear them speak? You can hear each one's voice perfectly and hear how they talk---their timbre and range and vocabulary and grammar (or lack of it)---so much so that dialog just flows onto the page effortlessly because it's as though you're sitting there with them, listening to them speak amongst themselves. All you have to do is transcribe what you hear, and sometimes it all happens so fast that you find yourself typing furiously just to keep up so you don't lose it.

Yeah, pretty much. I'm a fly on the wall of my characters living their lives, gabbing away about things.

Yes. It's so bad that when I'm doing dictation I'll be imitating their voices and my dictation software will get everything I said wrong cause my speech pattern changed.

Yes I do. My therapist said I wasn't crazy, just un-sane.

Yes, I would think most of us do. Especially if the dialogue becomes pouring out of the fingers, you're hearing it in your head.

I have developed an affinity for characters. I think it's a sign that at least something about them is real enough to the reader.

I pretty much see, hear, smell, (you get the picture) whatever my POV character does.

When I write, it's just a movie I am watching which I try to put down on paper in a nice sounding way. The characters always speak, and when things sound off or forced I have to change things. It really is like a tiny, little world :)

The worst is when they cross their arms, scowl, and tell you no, they aren't doing what you want them to do.
