Name an inflatable cowboy
« on: February 03, 2018, 10:01:33 PM »
So I need some naming help once again. The scene involves a guy that died and the two MCs need to stash the body quickly. They're at a motel in Odessa, TX, and they see a decoration with an inflatable cowboy sitting on a bench. They swap the dead guy out with him and put the cowboy's clothes on the dead guy, which leaves them with a naked inflatable cowboy in the backseat. Lily (the FMC) gets kind of attached to him and gives him a name, which she mentions when they're crossing the border because he's mistaken for another person in the car. Later on he gets popped in a fit of rage. What's a good name for him?

Just pick famous cowboy movies or names actors have played in cowboy movies.

John Wayne:

Marshall Reuben J. 'Rooster' Cogburn
John Wyatt
Duke
Stony Brooke

Clint Eastwood:

Josey Wales
Hogan
Tom
Joe
Preacher
Pardner
Marshal Jed Cooper

Jed (Jedediah Smith) Not exactly a cowboy but a kick butt mountain man
Butch Cassidy

Frank Stillwell (Apple Dumpling Gang names :P)
Russel Donovan
Amos
Homer
Clovis

Danny Trejo as Razor Charlie (From Dusk Till Dawn 3)

Jackie Chan as Chon Wang (doubled by Andy Cheng and Yuen Biao) (Shanghai Noon)
Owen Wilson as Roy O'Bannon/Wyatt Earp

Gary Cooper as Marshal Will Kane (High Noon)

That's actually hilarious. Do you think it would pass trademark muster if she wanted to name him Puff Daddy then the guy says no, you will get sued. So she names him Puff Buddy?

Can you really get sued for mentioning a celebrity's name? I could see if you were using an actual famous person as a central character in your story, but this is an inflatable cowboy in what sounds to me like a short, funny scene.

Air Bud.  ;D

Well, she wouldn't get sued for naming him Puff Daddy in the story, so that wouldn't make sense. You'd have to come up with another reason why she wouldn't want to call him that. I looked him up, he's like 48 years old, so maybe that could be a sticky point.

I'm laughing at Wyatt Burp and Air Bud.

I think parodies of names are fair game. Even names could be ok if they were positively presented. Kind of iffy with a blowup cowboy boyfriend...
Call him Puff Laddy?

Buff Puff
Puff n' Stuff

Or maybe he's just the name of some boy she's pining over.

Some great ideas here already! Historical cowboys names modified to indicate inflated would have been how I'd go. There was a guy named John Ware, could be Wair or air or w'air. But  don;t think I can compete with some of the excellent suggestions already made.

You can be sued for anything at anytime, but does the suit have legs? That is, will it survive a Motion for Summary Judgment?

I was a lawyer. Puff Daddy is frelling funny, and kudos to Colin. If it was me, I'd use it, but then, I believe not only can I beat the rap, I can stand the ride, too.

YMMV.

Haha, I'm strongly leaning toward going with it. It makes sense that character would come up with that too.

Okay, considering the double entendre potential inherent in the blow-up doll (cowboy) scenario I'll probably get in trouble for mentioning these but how about:

Woody (from Toy Story)

Johnny Hard-.. (Johnny Hardin from history and Maverick)

Just trying to be funny, in case the FMC is ornery too.  No offense intended (or is that entendred).

I think Woody is on my list now...probably pending research on how likely I would be to get sued by Puff Daddy. Ornery is the FMC's defining character trait, haha...there is already quite a bit of double entendre.

Then the guy won't be able to stab him multiple times with a fork and almost get arrested because someone saw the scene from a distance, thought it was a murder in progress and called the police.

I am laughing myself into hysteria. Glad I checked in here tonight. His name should be Foghorn Airhorn or E. Jack Yulate Hindinberg.

After reading all these replies, I feel like I need to write a whole series about inflatable cowboys. It could be the adult version of "The Indian in the Cupboard". Thanks for the help...and the laughs :)

"Darn it, Sock Holiday," Stale Dale said. "What I really want to know is am I gluten-free?"

I've often wondered about that.

They say Buck rogers...

But they never say who...

I only know I wouldn't want to be rogered by Buck.

It's like "Smoking kills." Nobody really wants to see a list.
