Words to KU pages conversion
« on: February 09, 2018, 09:13:08 AM »
Don't we have a thread somewhere that hashes out a pretty good conversion of manuscript length (word-count) to equivalent KU "pages"?

Can anyone point me at it? Or just the post the conversion?

For my books:

Empire of Chains: 167576 words, 856 KENP, 196 words per page

The Shadowed Land: 137521 words, 682 KENP, 202 words per page

Sunweaver: 105272 words, 522 KENP, 202 words per page

It looks like you can assume roughly one KENP for every 200 words.

Thanks - are you talking about the number of pages Amazon displays on your book page?

I'm looking for how they count a "page" for KU reads. Unless things have changed since I was in KU, that number is usually completely different.

Thanks! KENP is what I was looking for!

Do you know if they've finally standardized it? Or does it still vary by formatting the way it used to? I know authors with similar word counts used to have widely varying KENP.

My formatting is mostly the same for all my books. I used a different font for Sunweaver, but it didn't seem to change the results much. I use size 12 type, and I do 1.5 line spacing for my Kindle versions. I've found that's easiest on the eyes for reading on an e-reader for me.

Sorry about that. My KENP average is 202 per page.

I remember a long time ago someone giving me that same ratio as a guide for what to expect (100 pages per 20k words). However in experience (both mine and reported others), it actually varied widely, as you said. It does *seem* from what I can see to be more standardized around that ratio now, although I havent done any large scale survey or anything, so maybe thats not everyones experience.

Thanks, y'all. It sounds like 200 words per page will give me a decent guestimate.

102,379 words / 494 KENP = 207
4923 words / 25 KENP = 197

So yeah, roughly 200 words per KENP page for me too!

Take the number of characters (not words, the characters, which includes spaces and enters) not including front matter, and divide by 1000. That should be a pretty good rough estimate. No one knows for sure what Amazon does, but I've checked this recently, and it still works.

Word count is ambiguous in calculating KENPC. If two books have the same number of words, but one has a lot of big words and the other has a lot of small words, they won't be the same KENPC.

Mine range from 160 to 200 words per page. I did a comparison about two years ago and found that my books were within about 1% when counting characters per page, including spaces.
