Can somebody explain LitRPG to me?
« on: February 23, 2018, 04:33:32 PM »
I know it's from role-playing games but the ones where I have clicked on the Look Inside it seems to be almost nothing but dialogue and almost no action. Why do people read them instead of just going and playing the game?

dystopian sounds grim but actually fun abounds

There's a crossover audience of those who enjoy reading (mainly SFF) and gaming, so LitRPG allows them to plant a foot in both worlds.

I don't think that's representative of the genre. I've only sampled here and there, but I've never come across one like you describe. So LitRPG with more traditional prose is out there.

Sample Ready Player One, or Threadbare, or Critical Failures to get a taste of the variety.

LitRPG is fiction that tells a story set within a gaming framework. Typically,  it's a person who enters their favorite video game/RPG and has to level up (become better)  to win (and stop the book's villain).

RPG books are gaming systems that people use to play an RPG, like the Dungeons and Dragons Player's Handbook.
