I just re-designed my cover for my series ... does it work?
« on: March 08, 2018, 02:17:37 PM »
*******Final Cover******* Now I'm on to bigger and better things ... Thanks for all your input!!!!!!

*******UPDATE - Here's another cover with a little more depth and texture*******

*******UPDATE - I added 6 New Fonts at the bottom*******

Right now I have three covers - and I want to use the best one. I'm all for using my original one, but I want to make sure my cover does what it's supposed to do. This is YA Fantasy.
Here is the previous cover:

Here are two versions of the new design, and keep in mind the only difference in the 2 new covers is the Title Cover:

Version 1 & 2

Version 3, 4, 5, and 6

I would go with the second. I think the new design is better because it focuses more on the figure, who I assume is your main character. The first one looks more like a political thriller about anonymity to me.

Sorry, had to shrink them down to see them properly. The original cover is definitely NOT YA fantasy. It's got thriller fonts and thriller vibe and would make a great thriller cover.

I think I might like the third one better if the title font color matched the kid's blue on the hoodie. Right now the version 1 remake looks best.

Thumbnail size:

The new imagery is much better.  That weird symbol on the old cover just didn't do it for me.  So definitely go with the new imagery.  I think the typography could be improved, though.  I like the use of gold for "Remnant," so stick with that, but try a different font.  I'd also make all the white text the same font.  Actually, now that I think about, try using the same fonts and colors you had for the old cover on the new cover.  I think that would look pretty cool.

I have a natural aversion to yellow, but I have to say the yellow title looks the best. It's the most eye-catching.

I agree that the original cover looks more like a political thriller. Of the two options, I would probably choose the yellow one. However, I think there are still better options out there. I'm not particularly fond of the type or the textured item behind the type. Specifically, I think the type looks cheap for a lack of a better word. There's no depth.

I like the one without the images sketched into the rock. With the other versions, the 'book one' looks like it's just slapped over the image. Without the image there, it looks more 'alive'. That's not the word I'm looking for but I'm coming off a migraine right now. The new font is also an improvement in my eyes.

I know, I thought I'd like the blue better. I'm with the other poster above and yellow isn't my first choice. But with the darker background, yellow pops out better.
Go with the stone that doesn't have the image behind it.
I'm still not a fan of these fonts. They don't look YA fantasy enough to me. The fonts in versions 1-3 looks more fantasy than the others.

I agree, the newer fonts arent really fantasy fonts especially young adult. Thats why use the first one it reminded me of a bunch of young adult fantasy books that I read when I was growing up. Ill do some looking into the fonts and see which one or if I can find one that pops and looks why fantasy at least more than others.

Well, thanks for giving my suggestion a try, but it didn't turn out the way I hoped.  lol  Oh, well.  That's the way this stuff goes.

Hmm...

All right... how about this...

All that text at the top is sort of crowding into each other.  Maybe try a short, fat font for "Remnant" so that you have more room for the other words.  Do you have the "Immortal" font?  I think that might work.  And see if you can make the yellow more of a pale yellow and less Las Vegas gold.  Then use a sans-serif font for the rest of the words, but not the one you're currently using, because its lines are a bit too thin.  Perhaps the "Antonio" font for that.  *shrug*

The original looks dramatic, intriguing, and the font and symbol are vibrant. I would click on the first, but maybe ignore me as I am not a 'young adult', except in my mind  ;)

The original cover does not say YA to me. But I like it.
New one seems more YA, but I'm not a fan of the image or the metal pattern behind the title.
Hate to say it but I'd try again with entirely different source images.

When I shrink it down to half size, #2 is the one that looks the cleanest and easiest to read. And the font is kind of snazzy. :)

As always take what you need from my feedback and leave the rest.

I'm not sure I'm feeling the newer covers. I know the old one didn't look right for your genre/audience, but this one doesn't feel better. The harsh grey solid background for the typography takes up too much of the cover, I feel. Does it have to be there at all?

Also be careful with the typefaces you choose. The latest versions you have all use historical typefaces as opposed to fantasy. It can be a very grey area, I know, and given the concept of the rest of the cover, it should sort of blend the two. That may be what you want, but IMO the latest versions say: Old Italian Da Vinci Code style book, Celtic with religious overtones (because of the arch on the A), the slab serif on the next one reads Western, and the following three sort of repattern that.

It's super tough getting the typography right. I actually really like the first blue version you had where the type looks set into the background. The typography gave off Greek Mythology- which is where I think you might be headed with this. The latest versions don't look typeset into the background like the others do.

There's a lot of space behind the MC on the cover, are you able to bring the shadow and the end of the corridor closer? As in, make that hallway shorter?

Also wondering, why the distorted glass/blur effect at the top half of the cover?

I know this is a lot, as I said- take what you need and leave the rest, this is just my feedback. I think it can become something great, and I really like the first two initial concepts, I think they were headed in the right direction.

Hmmm close. The image yes, the lens flare not so much. It overwhelms. If you soften it maybe, by adding a blur and reducing the opacity. But definitely an improvement.

For the fonts, I think #2 and 3 are best, followed by #6.

Numbers 1,4, and 5 aren't very good, and a couple of them look like they belong on historical novels.

That's definitely the best version of the cover! I thought the smudged glass-like look was a part of the original photo. It's so much better without that.

This is a much better improvement IMO. But is there a reason you're keeping the name in black instead of making it white? Adding the stroke around it distorts the distressed look of the type, and I can't read it. I think if you made it white with a possible soft dropshadow behind it to make it readable it would be good.

*******UPDATE - Here's another cover with a little more depth and texture*******

This one is my favorite and made me instantly interested. I don't know that it says YA to me, but it definitely seems like it's close to YA or possibly New Adult, and I keep asking myself all kinds of questions. Like who is that guy and why does he look so cool, and what is he doing, and what kind of danger is he in, and I realize I'm already hoping he'll make it. So yeah. I'm already invested. Didn't really expect a cover to do that. Good job!
My eyes gloss over the title every single time no matter which version, and it was hard for me to concentrate on it to see the differences in font.

Here's my final Cover

I hope I'm not too late to the party!
I'm new to this forumThis is my first post!

The cover would look 100% better if the image were flipped.
It reads kinda awkward right now:
Remember that people read from left to right. It's kinda awkward right?
We are led to look at "Floyd", with nothing really leading us back to the left; it's easy to miss the figure in the distance.

Would work tons better like this.

I like version 6, except the font for Remnant looks too tall taking a lot of vertical space, hence the need for a lot of space between letters. Also, too close to the edges. A font with regular height and breathing space around the type will make it look a lot more polished. All the best!
