Anonymously help with my research paper about Author Incomes
« on: April 06, 2018, 11:43:04 AM »
I'm a full time author, full time student & a divorced mom of 6 (5 at home, one is grown).  I need to write an analysis of my own research, so I'm asking for authors to complete a quick survey for me if you have a minute. It's anonymous but you do need to be signed in to google to fill it out, so I don't get duplicate submissions. Here's a link to the survey and if this post violates the TOS, I apologize.  Thanks, in advance for your participation

"How many books have you published (in all formats) to date?"

Are you asking how many copies, or how many titles?

Done. Interesting results. Looks skewed high on income.

Done! I've helped skew it back towards low income. ;-)

Done.

I do agree with another post on the survey--it would help to have more income tiers above 10k/month and to mention that you're looking for the average, as well as whether or not you're asking about revenue or profit.

Done. Although I think the income question is going to be totally useless since it didn't specify net or gross, average or minimum/maximum.

This is a good point. I answered "profit" as opposed to revenues; but without this it is meaningless.

The ranges were a bit odd. I think most people publish 1 or 2 books a year, so isn't everyone going to put 0-5 for books? A few people will enter the higher categories.
Income: gross/net. etc.  A bit vague in all questions... but fun to answer a survey, anyway.   :D

To the OP, If you need a larger sample, there's a great website called Author Earnings that really crunches the numbers and can give you a bigger picture:  http://authorearnings.com/

I think it goes without saying, but I don't believe the authors on KBoards are a normal sampling of authors. I think it's fair to assume KBoards probably earn a higher average income than those authors not on KBoards. People share advice on how to succeed, and often some pretty hugely successful authors give advice here....

Then, it is possible that the ones who tend to answer surveys are doing better, and therefore they are happy to fill it out. Those with bad results may not be interested or not see the use in filling the survey. (If you consider yourself an author that earned 5 bucks last month, are you really enthused to fill out a survey to report this?)

All of this means that the results of the survey basically just apply for understanding the publishing results of some people here on Kboards.

Also, sometimes people flat out lie on surveys. For income, you could stick a slot in for people earning 100 million plus, and someone will check the box, ha ha....

I think it would be a stretch to assume this survey applies to authors as a whole. If you wanted to balance things out, you could do surveys to different author groups (on FB perhaps) and see what happens. But really, anyone in an author group probably has an advantage over the authors that don't join any groups.

Again, probably goes without saying, but just in case - I wanted to mention that for your paper.

Thanks, I love that site. My assignment was to conduct my own survey, but AuthorEarnings is totally awesome.

So...are you going to share the results on Kboards?
