Got good news today
« on: July 11, 2018, 05:55:25 PM »
This probably belongs in another forum, but I don't visit other forums, so if it gets moved I wont see any replies.

I got my Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia diagnosis 3 years and 3 months ago. I've been sticking to gallows humor, and just doing my thing until the inevitable happens.

Today, I went to my regular checkup at the tumor institute, and my heimotologist informed me that my white cell count was down from 39k to only 30k. (The average person has a white cell count of about 4K - 9k.)

I didn't realize until today how my cancer diagnosis has ben affecting me. I'm in a great mood, and that only goes to show how I've been depressed, and not know it.

The reprieve could be short lived, but I'm feeling great, and wanted all my friends on kBoards to know!

Happy for your good news.

I can see how you say you've been depressed, but you've been productive, so I guess kudos for keeping it up and continuing to do what you love.

I dunno, Mark. At that rate, you probably only have another 50 or 60 years left.

(Great news! Woot!)

I've been trying to keep my productivity up, but I've not got much writing done. My space pirate short was the first thing I've written in about nine months (other than blog stuff.) The lack of productivity was wearing on me, and I'm feeling energized. Be got two rough drafts that need polishing and editing, so this news is what I need right now to combat apathy.

:) the previous prognosis was six-ish years based on the white count climb. At that point it would be the to look at options, I as wary of what was available. The doctor also told me today that there is a new drug that is super promising for my flavor of cancer. It's like a tremendous weight has been lifted, and I'm feeling superb.

Congrats on the great results.

Doctor's can rarely talk in absolutes. I can't tell you how many times I was called to my grandfather's bedside to be told by the doctor he wouldnt make it through the night/week. Yeah we did that for almost 20 years. Do keep postive and enjoy life.

Excellent news, Mark. You're always so "bout it" that it's hard to imagine that kind of pressure sitting on your shoulders  :o. Glad to hear your mood is up, and hope it stays up to keep fueling that creativity.

Hi, Mark!

I can understand completely, as I was diagnosed with CLL three years ago following routine blood work. It sounds as if you are also in what we call "watch and wait', or, more appropriately, "watch and worry."

Congrats on the excellent news! Is there anything in particular you have been doing? Some supplements can affect your numbers, though often there seems to be no rhyme or reason to what the numbers do. My numbers have risen only slowly, and occasionally fall; I think I'm at about 14000 or so now. Have you had the FISH test done to determine the genetic markers?

I was simply panic-stricken when first diagnosed. When I discovered that, as my wonderful hematologist told me, I had "none of the scary markers", I relaxed considerably and can honestly say that I think about it only when I have one of my six-month checkups upcoming (which I now do.)

Feel free to PM me or email me at marie@theprosepolisher.com.  All the best to you.

That's great news, Mark! Here's to a continuing drop in your numbers! I don't know a lot about CLL but I do have a chronic blood cancer myself. I remember reading that the life span of someone with PV was 10 years when I was first diagnosed back in 1999 ... needless to say, that estimate was wrong and many people are living very long lives with these chronic cancers.

(I've mainly had high platelets and my WBC was between 18-21K until I started taking interferon last year. They've both finally fallen to normal range last month.)
