How can you add italics to your blurb? (solved)
« on: July 12, 2018, 01:02:14 AM »
Do you have to use author central to upload a blurb if you want to format italics and bold? From what I can remember, changing a blurb in KDP is fairly prompt, but author central takes a few days, and once you've used author central to change it you will always have to do it that way. Is this still true?
Thanks.

in the KDP settings for the book, use <i> before and </i> after

There's a big list of formatting codes here: https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G201189630

It probably supports more, because I've seen others including images as well. (Until they get banned for doing so, I guess.)

Also yWriter novel writing software & SalesScanner, a free KDP/Google/Smashwords/Createspace sales analyser for PC. (Mac soon)

Just be careful because after you click Publish you won't spot any mistakes until the book goes live. Then you'll have to go in and edit it again.

I recommend pasting your description (with the new codes) into the box on this page to try out the results:

https://www.w3schools.com/html/tryit.asp?filename=tryhtml_default

Clear the left hand box first, and click Run>> once you've pasted in your description. If it all looks okay on the right, you know it should work on KDP.

Thanks for this. It was a mess. I've managed to sort out the italics. I can get the bullet points, but not underneath each other. And I'm not sure about the line break, do you put the symbol at the beginning and then the end where you want the break? I think it's going to take me as long to format the blurb as it did to write it!  ::)

Thank you to Jan for asking the question - I was wondering how to get the nice bold / italic text that others managed - and Simon for the handy link.  Off to play with my blurbs now!  ;)

Go to this link:

https://kindlepreneur.com/amazon-book-description-generator/

You enter your blurb in the box, using bold, italic etc. in whatever manner you please and it will generate the code which you copy and paste into your kdp book set-up.

It's the most hassle-free way to go.

Thanks so much for this  :-*. I've used it and tried it on the Tryit Editor and it seemed to work.  Am now about to hit 'publish'  :)

(for anyone else using the generator, you have to type in the description and not use cut and paste. It does not have spell check, so read everything through carefully! )

I appreciate this question being asked here because I've been having trouble trying to figure out how to add bold to my blurbs as well. Thank you.

And I appreciate all the help from the KBoarders  :-*. My new book has just gone live and the blurb looks fine. Because it's non-fiction it has bullet points as well as italics, so that was going to be a bit of a nightmare. I now have to put it into my signature, but unfortunately it looks like I'll have to murder one of my existing darlings to accommodate the new one  ::)

I handle this in Author Central, where nothing bad can happen because you get to preview the html. Once I've got it right, I copy the html and paste it into the description window on KDP, for other-country markets and in case I should have occasion to publish the book again some time. (When you re-publish, the KDP description will over-ride the Author Central version.)

I've always found that Author Central goes live within a very few hours, and sometimes in minutes.

Note that there are several Author Centrals, and the US one won't affect the book description on any Amazon store except the US one (and the same would be true of UK, FR, and DE, the only stores I bother with because in my wayward youth I lived for a year or two in each of those countries and can claim some knowledge of them.

If you want to add italics to you blurb, write like this:

<i>This is italics text.</i>

And please be careful and check your word before publishing because you can't change anything in your book until it goes live.

If you want to add some more, use this:

- Headlines
<h2>This is a orange headline.</h2>

You can also use <h1>, <h2>, <h3>, <h4>, etc...

- To bold any text use this tag:
<b>This is bolded text.</b>

- To use italics in any text use this tag:
<i>This is italics text.</i>

- To underline any text use this tag:
<u>This is underlined text.</u>

- To use bullets use this tag:

<ul>
<li>This is a bullet point.</li>
<li>This is second bullet point.</li>
<li>And Third bullet point.</li>
</ul>

Thanks. But this seems to be the simplest solution provided by SND
