Hey all. I'm continuing my little mini series with a murder mystery. I have a general cast of characters, but I need some more. The mystery will be "clean" to go along with the rest of the series. The retreat is in an old mansion on an island. The main character is a witch (see my sig) and there's a couple other characters with abilities, but I keep most of the witchy stuff to a minimum.

So, who has writer's retreat stories? Both good and bad. Who has a quirk/personality a character could have that would add humor or tension to the mix. What is your day like at a retreat? What are your emotions at a retreat? Worried about what's happening at home? Single-mindedly focused? Relaxed? Nervous?

Besides the cast that will be a part of the retreat, there will also be an inspector that's there. Not police, but building inspector of some sort (I haven't fleshed out exactly what he'll be looking at to see if they "pass"), but I wanted to add a little mayhem to the mix.

Ok, story time. Go!!

How about an eccentric writer who communicates only through poems & riddles?

Ha, this one gave me a laugh for sure. It's up on the drawing board!

How about one who spends so much time worrying about their characters and their plot that they never actually get anything written?

If they're providing meals at the retreat, the inspector could be a health inspector, there to check out the kitchens. And if the victim is poisoned... was it murder, or bad meat???

Jake & Boo - cozy, paranormal mystery with a dash of M/M romance. And cats.

Ah yes, could definitely use a health inspector for a new place. Sounds great!

Well, there's always the writer who has been to every writers' convention, taken all sorts of writers' classes, and so forth and therefore has a "solution" or suggestion or annectdote for any thing any of the other writer's want to discuss or do. Not a mean or bad person, just always trying to be helpful and completely oblivious about how they sound when doing so.

Seafood is great for accidental or deliberate food poisoning (see Shellshock, in my signature) and since they're on an island ...

How about the serious non-fiction writer, who seems to have something to hide...because he/she is actually making more money writing romances?

Note:  I write romances, so this is not a slight! LOL

How about the guy who promises to buy and read your book, but never makes it past the Look Inside?  (If that doesn't have justifiable homicide written all over it.) :)

Ha, this is so funny because I'm currently writing out some of the characters and I had that thought. I have one who is this serious, almost hermit-like man. And I just scratched out the idea of, what if he makes his money off a romance pen name? That's so awesome. I'm definitely going to make him into a non-fiction writer "in the open".

The show Remington Steele had an episode where the suspects were all mystery writers, I think. All I remember is that one writer of romantic suspense kept saying, "Had I but known!" Anyway, having one (or all) of the writers be mystery/detective writers who want to chime in to solve the mystery might be fun.

Oooh, sounds like I have the plot for another book. How fun, to have everyone in the way of the mystery. What a delicious pile of chaos!
