We welcome everyone to this forum, from newbies to tech warriors. No complicated rules here.

General Rules

[ ... ]

- Links to your website. We don't allow posts that are designed to get people to go to other sites to make their Amazon book or Kindle purchases. You may have a discrete link to your site in your signature, subject to the signature guidelines below.

I have a question.  I don't particularly want people to go to my website to buy my book on Kindle -- I have no way to sell a Kindle version -- but I do want people to read a longer sample than the one offered by the Amazon site.  My book is the first volume of a fantasy epic and so the Amazon sample only represents a few percent of the total story.

Is it OK to post a link to a free .mobi file that contains a more generous sample?

Drat.

I think I may have made a mistake.  I was overcome with the horrors after posting my introduction thread.  Quite a few folks posted after me and received lots of responses while my lonely hello languished.

I then sent a pm to Betsy asking if I had done anything wrong.  Suddenly i realized I have no idea of the rules about private messages.

 My apologies, Betsy.

LM-

Welcome to KindleBoards!

Not to worry, PMs to moderators (unless you're asking us to buy your book  ;D) are fine...

And I wouldn't worry about the Introductions; it wasn't anything you said.  There's an ebb and flow.  And if there were a lot of people who posted intros after you, you were probably just missed amidst all the chaos.  There may have been a train wreck of a thread that drew bystanders.  ;D

You will want to read Forum Decorum to be sure you know the rules however!

Welcome again to KindleBoards.  Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions!

Hi!
I am relatively new to KBs but gradually getting the hang of it. I have just been trying to do my signature and think I may have made a blunder. I have included a link to my books review blog - very much a work in progress - but it does include links from books reviewed  straight to the Amazon site. This is not to my pecuniary advantage - I am not an amazon associate - but I think it may fall outside the protocol of KBs. Will you take it off if not appropriate and accept my apologies. Meanwhile thanks for KBs - I am enjoying it.

Best wishes, Cathy

Cathy,

I fixed your link.  It should have been:

you had:

There's a dichotomy between the idea that this is a child-friendly forum and several of the erotica covers posted in signatures.

I'm an adult, so they don't bother me, but to say they are all appropriate for children is really laughable.

Just pick a side. Either it's a forum for children or it isn't.  I haven't seen any children posting here...

Iris,

Good question.  Signatures and avatars can be turned off so that people don't see them, and many people do that while they browse, either at work or at home with their children on their laps or at their side.  And even so, there are limits to what we allow in images.

I hope this clarifies our policy.  Thanks for the comment. (And thanks for actually reading Forum Decorum. ;D)

I've been lurking more than posting, since I first logged on, and have learned many things that made it easier to get my first two books out on Kindle. The existence of this forum has been a great help to me.

I've been meaning to post this note for some time. I spend a lot of time on another moderated forum, Cloudy Nights Telescope Reviews. For several years I served as a moderator there, and so I have a pretty good idea what it takes to keep a forum such as this one on an even keel. Consider this a tip of the cap from one who knows. The effort is appreciated!  ;D

Hello,

I am going to have a free promo day on October 1st, for 24 hours.  I have been looking around and have come up with about four links for free book promotion.  It's possible that they are all to the same place, but I am not sure.  I am really confused as to where I should be posting and when, thus my question.

I was thinking that it might be advantageous to place my post in advance, but I am not sure about the rules.

Thanks for your help in advance.   :)

Lee,

good question.

There are two places you should promote your book; one is the Book Bazaar thread for your book, if you have one.  If you don't, you should certainly start one.  If you have one, remember that you can't make back-to-back posts less than seven days apart, so you should time your posts so that you can announce its "freeness" on October 1st.

Another is the Links to Free Books thread in the Book Bazaar.  This is the thread where authors may promote their own books.  Note that you are only allowed to promote in that thread once per free run, so you should wait until the book actually goes free.

Finally, you may certainly post about your book's free run in your signature; you can do that now.

There are a couple of bargain book threads; one of them says something about free books in the subject, but that was really before the Links to Free Books thread was created.  And the Free Book Finds thread that's pinned to the top of the Book Bazaar is not for self-promotion.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for such a quick response, I will check those spots out.  I think I posted something somewhere before, it might have been Book Bazaar, I mentioned that my book was .99.  So that becomes my only non-free-promo thread?

Lee, you can find your previous threads by going to "Profile" in the top blue menu bar, and then tapping on "Show All Posts" in the left side menu.

Your thread in the Book Bazaar is where you post about your book whether free or not, subject to our posting rules.  You can change the subject that appears in the topic listing by going to the first post in the thread and tapping on "modify" and then editing the subject.  That new subject will appear in the topic listing.

Depending on the price of your book, you may also post in one of the "price" threads in the Book Bazaar AND you may also post in one of the genre threads.  You can look in the first post of the Threadipedia & FAQ pinned to the top of the Book Bazaar to see which genre threads are available.

Hello Mods,

I have a question that I want to get cleared up before I start blasting away. These forums have been good to me, and I want to make sure I'm good to them.

If, say, I wanted to give away a certain amount of free copies of my book(s), would this be appropriate in the Book Bazaar? Obviously it would conform to all the rules (1x post/week, etc). I haven't found anything that says otherwise, but you can never be too sure.

Thanks!

-Heath

Heath,

You can do so in the Book Bazaar, but you must do it as part of the existing thread for the book.  If you don't have a thread for the book yet, you can start one with the giveaway and then that will be your book thread.
