Pubit! Problems?
« on: December 17, 2010, 07:41:20 AM »
I'm trying to register for the B&N Pubit scheme, but it keeps coming back to me with:

We are experiencing technical difficulties. Please try again later. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Anyone else having problems?

Stop calling it a scheme. You've hurt the computer's feelings and now it won't let you register until you apologize.

Was in Pubit this morning and didn't experience any problems. If anything it felt like it was running and approving changes faster than normal  :)

I uploaded "Isle Royale" to Pubit! two nights ago, and it still says "Processing," even though they claim it takes 24 hours to go live.  So either they're having tech issues, or are backlogged, or Santa's elves are running amok in their system. Or something.  :)

I did wonder if it was because I'm in the UK, and therefore can't select a "State" in the drop down box. However, when I select UK from the country box, the State box gets greyed out. So it should be OK.

I gave up when it wouldn't move on if I didn't put in a US postal code. ::)

It did it to me about 3 days ago...I just waited a day and everything was fine.

Their website is questionable.  When I had an issue (all my sales suddenly weren't listed) I made an attempt to contact them.  I went through the phone tree 5 times plus an email.  I got the same reply: their self publishing branch is new so they're "still working out the kinks."

I couldn't get in earlier (the Sales tab wouldn't load) and I don't know if sales are reporting now.  My book jumped to #21 in the teen fantasy bestselling list though I haven't seen a sale in a few hours.

Last time I checked, every author still needed a US bank account and credit card in order to actually sell via PubIt. :(

Edited to add: Aha! Here's the relevant bit of info -

Quote from: B&N
Anyone with a valid U.S. Bank Account, U.S. Credit Card, and U.S. Tax ID can sign up to use PubIt! Your Tax ID can be a Social Security Number (SSN)/ITIN or an Employer Identification Number (EIN).

I did register, saw that information, then PFFFFTed in disgust and wandered back to Smashwords. :)

Thanks for that. Yes, I realised last night that I was actually already logged in using my purchasing account, which was stopping me registering. Then got through to the "setting up payment" page, and read the bit about the US Bank account.

Why is this? I thought we were supposed to be a global economy? Why are we non-US authors restricted like this?

Global economy only on a big-business scale, I guess. :-) Thanks to each country's business and tax laws, it can be a pain in the rear to do business overseas. So I suppose I can forgive B&N for not opening their PubIt straight up to international authors... for now. People often forget that 18 months ago, Amazon's DTP had very similar restrictions.

You know you can get your books in the B&N catalogue via Smashwords?

Thank you. Yes, I'd seen that. I didn't do it for the memoir, but I'm going to do it for my own work. I guess I just wanted to deal with B&N directly, but I can go with the Smashwords link for now.
