Slight Boost From New Cover
« on: December 17, 2010, 07:57:47 AM »
Based on input from a reviewer and some readers, I've decided to change the cover of We Interrupt This Date to something that says Chick Lit. Here's the cover proof done by Paul Coleman. What do you think?

Says funny, zanny to me... So I hope thats right  ;)

Being a Graphic Designer by trade my only thought was move the text a little more to the right. Apart from that it hits the right buttons, clean, simple and sets the tone of the story.

Nicely done, Paul! And congrats, LC!

I like it - a lot!

My only nit-pick - what's with the dog?  I'm assuming it's supposed to be a real dog, la Paris Hilton.  But... the placement is wrong, to me.  It looks like the book cover had a sticker of a dog put over the top of it... sorry.  The dog doesn't look like it's IN the bag, if that makes sense?  If, on the other hand, the bag just has an applique of a dog, why doesn't the angle of the dog match the angle of the bag?  Sorry to nitpick - I really do like the cover, overall.

Oh yeah!  I forgot about the Kindle bug.  Nevermind my earlier comment.  Best to keep the text where it is.  Unless you're printing hard copies also.  Even then, it's a tossup, definitely a minor point.

I would never guess those two covers go to the same book.  The new one looks much more appealing, and definitely conveys the chick-lit message.

Thank you all so much for your input. I'm excited about the new cover and think it really goes with the tone of the book. I've asked Paul if he can put the dog in the purse instead of on it, but if not, I'll probably go with it the way it is.

:D I hope readers who can't look away will still be able to one-click.

Patricia, I'm planning to add a blurb to my Jobless Recovery cover so people will realize it's fiction. Otherwise, I'm in serious trouble with the feds if readers mistake it for self-help.

Love the cover in large.  Maybe I'm blinder than most, but in amazon thumbnail size, I can't read the whole title - it's catchy, so I'd like to be able to.  Might crunch the design though.

He should be able to - I'm thinking if he takes just the head of the dog and has it above the bag, it'll be perfect.  Just my two cents - it really IS a nice cover :)

I liked the abstractness of the first.

Yes, the dog should be in the bag and the second one illustrates that, but the first one does the same and adds to the quirkiness of the cover. Thats if quirky is where your going with this.

Go with the first one.

Thanks everyone for you valuable input. My initial impression was the second cover, first font and a bunch of you seem to have agreed. That's the one I'm choosing. I'm really impressed with Paul's work and I feel sure this new cover will help my book. I was a little hesitant to ask Paul for a cover because none of his other covers was anything like what I wanted, but decided to see what he could do with romantic comedy. I couldn't be more pleased with the results.

Here you can see what I mean about his other covers:

I vote for the second with the dog in the bag. The first cover is too much about the dog--and, as someone else mentioned, it doesn't make sense to me.

Great work!!!

When I saw the two covers for the very first time, my immediate and instant reaction was the first cover with THIS DATE was actually titled THIS DATE.

The second cover with "This Date" ran as a sentence and I saw the title as "We interrupt This Date." That one immediately caught my attention over the other, and the pun or double meaning came through.

Now that I have lost any opportunity to repeat that very first encounter, I think the reaction was due to the lower case letters flowing to convey a sentence.

Disclaimer: I have no idea what I'm talking about, just reporting an instant reaction.

I like the second one much better.  I'd still tweak the dog - so the head is straight up and down.  It's a living critter; he's going to move his head regardless of the position of the bag so that his head is straight, ya know?  BUT - I'm also being super-picky and if I just saw the cover on a book rack I probably wouldn't have a second thought about the dog's head position.  That said, girl - your original cover was nice, but this new one is slick - VERY professional looking.  I definitely think you could put it side-by-side with Big 6 covers :)

I like the graphics on the first one a lot better. But I prefer the text on the first as the lettering is a lot clearer, and should shrink down better.

Either way, it's a cute cover. :)

The second one says more about the character. "Here is one of those women who take their little dogs into restaurants."  The first one might just be a woman who has a dog at home.  Which one are you trying to get across?

So far I've seen a slight jump in sales with the new cover. Nothing major, but better than usual over the past 2 days. I think a promotion right now would give it a real boost. Sadly, no promotions coming up for a while.
