It's a mystery- Something is wrong. As Lance Underphal pads softly across the cold flagstone, he hears her weeping. She is on her knees, hunched over in the middle of the room, her back to him, facing the dark fireplace. Something is very wrong. Lance wants to rush to her, but can't. In a hoarse whisper, he says, "Callie?" She lets out a mournful wail from deep within as she turns, their infant son in her arms, blue and still. He reels from the blow. How can this be? They don't have a son.

Just approached by an agency in Thailand!
« on: December 17, 2010, 10:47:05 AM »
They asked (through CreateSpace) if I would send them a copy of my book for review... so it's not an actual offer yet, but very promising!

I looked them up, the email was from Thananchai Pandey of the Tuttle-Mori Agency Co. and they seem legit.

I'm quite excited!!

Have you read A Broad Abroad in Thailand by Dodie Cross?  Very funny book.  Made me want to go there though.  She made it sound like a really neat place to visit.

It's just a really hectic, crazy city. It's fine for a day, but then I couldn't wait to start checking out the beautiful scenery that is everywhere. It's a beautiful country. Get over there however you can and leave plenty of time for traveling!

No, I haven't read that, but it sounds great. It was an incredible place to visit. The whole country is a roller coaster ride. I just kept bouncing around to different places and loved all of it. I have to go back though because many of the things I wanted to see I couldn't because of weather, but then the things I ended up doing were still stellar! Plus I didn't get to even get close to the northern region, which is gorgeous too. :)

Victorine - you probably know this already, but jut FYI.  Tuttle-Mori is Japan's largest literary agency, with offices in London, Paris, NY, LA and Bangkok.  If you can get representation through them for foreign sales, you'll be in a very nice position.

When I googled them, I did see an address in Japan, and somewhere else but I didn't realize they were that large.  Wow.  Now I'm even more nervous!!

Thank you, Joe!!  I'm mailing the book out today.  :)

Okay, the book didn't make it in the mail today, so we're sending it in the morning.  This is what my husband typed up to send with it, and I'm just wondering what you guys think of it.  Is it too... braggy?  (Yes, I made that word up.)

Dear Mr. Pandey,

I am in receipt of your request for a review copy of my romantic suspense Not What She Seems, and have enclosed a copy for you in this parcel.  Over the past 8 months, I have enjoyed sales of nearly 10,000 copies of this novel, mainly in eBook format through Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.  I look forward to discussing additional opportunities with you in the near future.

No, it's not too braggy at all. These are the things you'd typically put in a query letter.  You might want to add any information about what else you are working on.

Good luck!

Congratulations Vicki!  That letter doesn't sound braggy in the least.  I think it's very understated and gets the point across nicely.  Good luck.

This is so exciting!

Ya know, it's funny, until you posted that about the letter and package I'd assumed you were sending them a file copy of your ebook. It didn't even occur to me that you'd have to send a DTB. I've been completely ebrainwashed.

Victorine,

I've had several foreign deals in the last few years and I've never actually mailed a copy of a book or manuscript.  When they've requested something, I have always sent them an electronic file, with a note that a hard copy is available if they would prefer.  No one has ever asked for it.  The electronic copy lets them get started reading right away and also allows them to pass it around in the office if need be.

You might try that before paying the postage.

First - congrats!!!
Second - the letter sounds perfect.
Third - I agree with the electronic format comment.  I was approached by a publishing company in Taiwan and they just wanted an electronic copy from my agent.

Thank you, everyone!

And I appreciate the advice about sending it via email.  I guess I assumed they wanted a hard copy, since they sent the request through CreateSpace, but he did give me his email and physical address, so I went with your advice and sent an email.

Now I get to chew my fingernails for a while!!!

Sorry to be so late in congratulating you! I agree with others-- email is the way to go, but be sure to ask them to confirm receipt. It took me several weeks to get confirmation that the agent in Turkey who requested Radium Halos actually received it!

Just a small update:  I emailed a NY Literary agent and he responded back in less than 1/2 hour.  He is going to read my book in the next couple of days and let me know if he feels like my style is for him.

He said he read my email with great interest, and went and downloaded the book.  He didn't even ask for a copy, he just bought it.  Funny!  Now I know another way to get sales.  ;D

I didn't even think about asking the rights agent in Thailand if he could confirm receipt.  Now I'm going to worry about that!  :D

I'll keep everyone posted on what happens next.  They both could pass on the book, and I'd be just where I was at before.  Although I did sell my 10,000th book yesterday.  That makes me smile wide!

Congratulations Vicki - on both agents!! Don't worry - they'll let you know what they want. When the Iranian publisher asked for a copy of my book, I first sent the ebook and then he asked for a print copy because it was easier for the translator to work with. If the Thai / Japanese agency decide they need a print copy, they'll let you know.

Good luck! I'm sure something will come of at least one of them. I can't wait to hear updates! This is so exciting!

Hi Vicki,
Great news!
I bet I know who the agent was!
Quick question for you, have you considered querying a few more agents? I think I queried 4-6.
That way you have your pick!!!

;D  You're probably right!  ;)  He passed on the book, so I did send out two more queries today.  (One to your agent!)  I might send out two more tomorrow.  I agree, it is good to have options.
