I now love my K1 more than ever!
« on: March 02, 2009, 12:57:00 PM »
I just wanted to share how I have come full circle (back to the K1) after several agonizing weeks of trying to decide whether or not to switch to K2.  After careful consideration, photo inspections and reading tons of posts... I absolutely LOVE my K1 (Estelle) and will be keeping her until one of us expires.  This is not a financial decision.

Like many people, I was initially allured by K2's sleek, slim, "sexy" design.  I love gadgets and the cooler, the better.  No doubt about it, K2 is very pretty!  K1 is more utilitarian looking.. it's kind of like the Honda Element.  Not so pretty to look at, but very practical and useful.  I personally even dislike the asymmetrical design.  However, these are things that I love about my K1 and that have ultimately won me over for good.

1.  The screen contrast and background color are brighter/better for READING.  I have inspected many side-by-sides (many of them here) and K2 background is clearly a shade or 2 of gray darker.  This would have been the thing I made this decision on.  I was hoping and thinking that K2 would be even BRIGHTER than K1 and I would have switched in a heartbeat... it is not, it's darker.

2.  Although I could have lived w/o it and it's almost a non-issue for me, the SD card slot makes my life easier as I keep mp3's of music on there and photos.

3.  When the battery "buys the farm" I can go out and buy another for ~$20

4.  For reading, it does everything it's supposed to do and does it well.  Period.

5.  I can customize my own screensavers as seen in this thread: http://www.kboards.com/index.php/topic,4591.0.html

There are a few things where K2 has an advantage over K1.  IMO, they are:

1.  I just looks nicer.  It's sooooo pretty and cool looking!

2.  Text to speech - I would never and I mean NEVER use this option but that's just me.  Now it's not guaranteed for every book and authors will decide the fate of this feature on a case by case basis.  But I get this is an awesome feature for some (if not most) people.  I especially feel good about something that enhances the quality of life for those with disabilities and for that, this feature is truly awesome.

3.  The pictures display FAR better with the 16 shades of gray - I personally only use Kindle to read books and books only so this is a non-issue for me.

4.  Faster page turns - I haven't noticed that K1 was "slow" by any means.  It's just fine, in fact.

Sooo.... I finally got clear that my attraction to K2 was simply based on looks and looks only.  K2 is like the pretty girl in HS who everybody wants to be with but then there's also this homely girl that has a great personality.

This is not to offend anyone who chose and/or ordered K2.  This is simply MY OPINION.  Newcomers who never had K1 will never know the difference and LOVE their K2's!!!  Those that chose to upgrade to K2 for your own reasons, I wish you nothing but happiness with it.  It's a wonderful thing!!!   :)

My husband offered to get me the K2 for my bday in July, I thought for sure I would ask for it.  I too, have found I like the K1 better (heard to many complaints).  I won't be asking for K2.  :(

I love my K1 also. Although I must admit I did have a few weak days of really wanting the K2-BADLY. But then I realized that my K1 serves my purposes just fine. The K2 doesn't have anything new that I need so I'll just keep my K1 until it dies.

Nice review! I enjoy reading different opinions. I have a K 2 but I loved my Klassic also. For me the text to speech is something I have really enjoyed, I could never listen to an entire book but it is perfect for my 45 hour commute every morning and evening. I think the Kindle whether it is the Klassic or K 2 is a sweet device and the best purchase I've ever made. 8) It provides me with hours of enjoyment everyday. I very rarely watch TV anymore.

I love your review!  I did decide based on finances to purchase a K1 from eBay.  I've had it for about a week now and I LOVE IT!!  It was the best purchase I have made in years.  It is great that I am able to read so many books in such a small package, AND I look cool now when I go to the local Starbucks with it!   8)

I too am pleased with my K1.  As far as the one feature I was jealous of, the text to speech, it doesn't sound like it will be as available as first advertised.  I guess I will continue to use my iPod if I want to listen to a book on car trips.  I love the K1 so much, I have taken advantage of the drop in used kindle prices to buy them for family members and I am now considering buying a spare for myself just in case mine dies when it is out of warranty.  Maybe all the bugs will be worked out for the release of Kindle 3.

I bought my brother a Kindle for Christmas, I think he was one of the last to get a K1 shipped.  I asked him if he was sorry not to get a K2, and he said "There's nothing I can read on a K2 that I can't read on a K1."

Betsy's law of electronic upgrading:  when there's something I have to do (or really want to do) that I can't do on my old device or with my old software, I upgrade.  For some people, the K2 meets that criteria, for some it doesn't.

I think it's great that there are now a whole bunch of K1s available for a whole new group of people.  Let's grow that base!  The more Kindlers the better for all of us!

I got my K1 two days ago.  I looked at the K2 but could not justify paying $400 (with case) for an electronic gizmo I had never even tried, even though I could afford it.

I found a used one for $125 and feel very fortunate, its a great device that changes the way one reads, similar to the way a Tivo affects watching TV or an MP3 player changes the way we listen to music.

K1 vs K2? While I wouldn't mind higher rez photos, it is basically a reading device, and I don't see much improvement on the K2. I really like the scroll bar on K1, not sure if navigating on K2 would be as good. Text to speech? I don't drive much, which would be the best use for it - though audiobooks would be the way to go anyway. I feel lucky that I bought K1 at just the right time. :)

Edit: When the color, hi-rez touchscreen with built in sidelight K3 or K4 comes out, I may be tempted to upgrade, but for now the K1 will do nicely.

I agree with this review 100%. I had a mental wishlist of things I'd want to see in the K2, and none of them were added. Furthermore, with several things being downgraded (no SD support, no replaceable battery) and the vaunted text-to-speech now caught in red tape hell (publishers can disable it for certain books), K2 just isn't worth it for people who already have K1 IMO.

Great review!! I too felt a slight desire to have a K2, but am so happy with my K1 that I had no good reason to change. I will be a K1 owner until it has to be replaced and then I will get whatever version is available.

Great post! Very informative, and the kind of thing I like to read before buying. Had an old Rocket Reader and loved it to madness, but it's dead now. Am so hoping that this Kindle thing really catches fire and takes off. Besides the convenience and economy, well, the trees are our friends.

So does it only power itself by battery? Can it not draw power from the wall? Sorry, to ask dumb question, but I'm just learning about this device.

Is it heavy? The Rocket had an oomph to it, like a smallish hardcover book. That was kind of nice, actually.

I am so happy to see this thread!  As much as I love gadgits and gizmos, when I saw the upgrades to K2, I just didn't see the "need" other than the sleekness to K2....(I do like that!)  Text to speech is cool, but, honestly, I would never use it and it is certainly not worth $359 to upgrade!

I am in the boat waiting for folders/organization capability for Kindle.  IF that upgrade is announced for K2 only and not available for K1, off I go to buy.....  :D  (Although WHY would a folder upgrade not be available for K1?  I think that won't happen)

Anyway, thanks for sharing.  I am not as crazy as I thought about my feeling for the pretty K2.  At least, I am in good company with non-crazies!!  :)

There is only one thing I have seen so far about K2 that I would like to have on K1 is the ability to highlight a single word for the dictionary function and to have it pop up at the bottom of the screen. No navigating away from the text to look up a word.

But this is not enough of an incentive to get me to switch. Although, I do like the other new feature that some people are reporting of chapter dots in the progress bar. Still even with that it is still not enough for a switch.

I agree - the K2 looks spiffy but there aren't any new features compelling enough for me to make the switch.  I'm stickin' with Pearl as long as she'll stick with me.  (My daughter and husband agree, although DH thinks K2 looks cool like Capt Picard's tablet thingy on Star Trek, and DD thinks her Kindle is going to end up looking like one of the old 90's giant cell phones.  :o )

I believe you can have it plugged in and use it while powering.  I never actually tried it though because that would make me attached to a wall. lol  However, they do make car chargers for Kindle so if you travel, that would come in handy.  FYI, without the wifi on, I can go about 1-2 weeks without charging it.  The wifi is a real battery drainer.  I only use it to download purchases but I do the actual shopping on amazon from my PC.  It's much faster to search and read reviews and I'm very impatient. :)

It's not heavy at all, but it feels like a regular book to me... minus the hand cramps from holding it open.  I just hold it with one hand or plop it in my lap or on the armchair or a dog's back.  Perfect!

You can use the Kindle plugged in if you want to while it is charging, but after that, there is no need. The charge will last several days, and you can recharge it overnight when necessary. Without a cover, the Kindle ways a little over 10 ounces. Most covers about double the total. There are hundreds of thousands of books available to read on the Kindle, with more being added all the time.

Yah..I feel the pull every now and then to get the k2...expecially after hearing everybody's excitement when they received theirs.  But I really really love my k1 so much so that I'm considering getting another k1 to have as a back up while the prices are falling.

I helped get myself over the hump of the K2 stories by purchasing a new skin for my K1 and iPhone and then I bought a used mEdge and light from the boards.  I don't want to spend so much money for a sleek new look, which is all about K2 that I am impressed with.

But I again go on record that if K2 gets a really cool upgrade that K1 does not, I will be the first to line up to get it.  And that may happen yet with the new knowledge that K2's search will also search notes in books within a very short timeframe.  People just figured out that they can place notes on the title page or wherever with "tags" in it.  Then, when they do a search for the tag it will bring up all the boks with that tag.  A form of Kindle organization.  This does not work for K1.....But that is not enough to make me upgrade, yet.

If I didn't already have a K1, I might be interested in the K2, but I can honestly say that there is nothing in the new addition that makes me want to part ways with Isabella.  Besides, do you know how many eBooks I can buy for the extra $349.00????   :D

A form of Kindle organization.  This does not work for K1.....But that is not enough to make me upgrade, yet.
On another thread, it was said that it will work on the KK. You can't do a search imediately after doing the tagging, due to the slower indexing, but after the indexing is complete it is supossed to work. I have only started on the books on my Kindle1, but so far it seems to work.

FYI: I tagged all my books on my k1 yesterday morning via a note on the title page.  I used tags like: qromance; qunread; qscifi;qread, etc.  The search did not begin working until approx 10pm that evening.  Now, 24 hours after adding the tags, a search WILL pull up my tagged notes!  So, YES, tagging via notes on K1 DOES work after 12-24 hours!

Ps: I have 5 pages of books in my K1, FYI

I'm not sure what category this belongs in, but...I leave that to our very wise mods!  :)
First, I agree totally with the OP. When I was able to buy a Kindle, K2's were about to be released. I read, I researched,...which did I want??? I chose KK...for 1- battery replacement and 2- SD card. I got a terrific deal here on these boards, and am thrilled with Hobs. If K3 or 4 puts these features back, then I'll look to buy a new one but right now, I couldn't be happier!
Second, please elaborate on how you all are "tag"ging on your KKs. A step by step would be helpful. I've only had mine about a month and between the reading, the message boards, the book-buying and oh yes, THE ACCESSORIZING (lol) I haven't tried too much of the techy stuff!
And lastly, theoretically, altho I would bet its been tried...since I read that you create a folder on the computer for custom screensavers and move it to Kindle, couldn't you also create folders for mysteries, romance, horror etc. on your pc, move books into them and than send it to the Kindle via USB? Just wondering and thank you for all the terrific tips you guys provide, not to mention the enabling you do!!

Have a look at this thread, works for KK as well:

In addition to Pidgeons link to the K2 tagging notes, you need to allow 24 hours for K1 to "index" your notes.  If you attempt to do a search for your tag words on K1 less than 24 hours after inputting them, the search will not work.  Try doing the search after 24 hours and BINGO!!  You have a great search!!!

PS: I also make up words as tags so that the search won't pull up words that may be already in a book.  For example, rather than use "romance" as a tag, I use the word "qromance".  I also use "qvampire", "qunread", etc

I'm new here. :)  I just got a USED K1 ($150!!!! What a deal!) and I'm beyond thrilled with it.  I've been THINKING about getting a Kindle since Nov. 07--I always take my time, LOL.  Anyway, my decision to get a K1 instead of K2 was based on some of the same things you mention.
3.  When the battery "buys the farm" I can go out and buy another for ~$20
Can you not do this w/ the K2?? I didn't even know that!  What happens when the K2 battery dies? The whole thing is dead forever??

4.  For reading, it does everything it's supposed to do and does it well.  Period.
Yeah, this is the main thing for me.  The whole "it will read to me" thing doesn't do much for me.  I just want to read books, LOL!

I couldn't be happier with Kate Kindle and already love her very much!  And I ordered a snazzy bobarra Austen cover (with frogs) for her! :)

With the K2, for a new battery you are supposed to send it back to Amazon for replacement.

It's hard to understand why Amazon dropped so many important features in K2 while adding new ones. No replaceable battery, SD card, loss of many other features. Is it true you cannot "jump ahead and jump back"  (ALT next/prev page) with K2? I find this feature to be crucial when you have a book with chapter formatting not working.

Great thread. I love my k1 too, especially after reading all the returns being made. The biggest reasons for me are SD card and the ability to replace the battery. All the problems with returns on the K2 have concerned me also. I still want the dx for the larger size and native .pdf, but you guys have me thinking maybe I should get another k1 for my daughter since the prices have dropped so much.

Personally, I have enabled 2 others to purchase K1's.  I did tell them the pros and cons to the K2 to be fair to them but they liked the idea of the SD card, replaceable battery and the lower cost of the K1.

Here, Here. Those same issues convinced me to look for a used KK once I decided to take the plunge. I got my KK from ebay from a person whom I later learned is a member of this board. I got it in the middle of March and at $240 (shipping included) I thought I had a great deal. (Those under $200 prices mentioned here are awesome).

I don't have any interest in the DX (but I could see my elderly in-laws or my college-kids taking a look at it). On another point, it irritates me that Amazon is claiming 'DX available now'. It's not - it's only available for pre-order for crying out loud.

I'll stay right with my KK for now and until it passes on forever.

I have to say I was puzzled by the overwhelming  consensus that the Kindle 1 was ugly.  Maybe I just don't have good taste, but I think the Kindle 1 looks just fine and has proven very functional. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one staying loyal to the original ;)

On my 5 hour plane ride today 3 of us had a K1.  We were comparing notes and agreed we had no interest in a new kindle until this one dies.   I was the only one with a skin on mine.  The naked K1 looked strange to me.  They said mine was fancy!

It's a wonderful thing!!!

i love her name! lol!
i never got a k1, only the k2, but i was thinking of buying a k1 for my niece.
i think i will now! i was'nt sure if it would feel like i was being cheap, but to me it seems like she would just love it as much as i love mine!

Just got my K1 in the mail 2 days ago. I got it for $149 shipped from Amazon - it was listed as a refurbished model, but it came in factory sealed packaging with everything in its place and looking brand new. By looking at the packaging and everything, there would have been no way I could tell it was refurbished.

I read quite a bit, but I always thought these were a novelty; but when I saw the $150 price tag, it was enough of a deal for me to make the jump. Now that I have it, I can't believe I've gone this long without one! The screen is amazing, the functionality is amazing, my wife loves that I don't leave piles and clutter of books laying everywhere throughout the house...

For me, it's as much about the reading management as it is about the reading, if that makes sense. I'm the type who usually has 2 or 3 books going at a time - now with the Kindle, I can have all of the books with me, and I never have to waste time finding my spot again 9I was never much for bookmarks, and would always rely on remembering - for the most part - where I left off...

I just bought a case and light from a really nice member here (thanks Lizbeth) so, once those items come, I'll feel like my purchase is complete - well, except for buying books, of course - because the case that came with it makes me nervous that the Kindle is going to fall out. But that's really my only complaint. Otherwise, I'm definitely a Kindle convert through and through, and the deals to be found on the K1 seems like it's that much more worth it than the K2 at this point, in my own opinion.

K1 at $150 is a very good bargain. I still think its a much better model than K2.

I have a K1 (classic) and I also have a K2 and the KDX. I have not use my K1 in a while. After reading this thread I decided to charge it and update it with the books I have bought since I used  it. I have been reading on it this morning. It was nice to read on it again. I had forgotten how much I loved it. I still love my other Kindle K2 and KDX. I am going to start using my K1 again. I will switch off between the K1 and K2 when I ride the subway to work. I will also use the K1 when I go to get my haircut or take a bath.

I just bought my second K1 so I definitely see the value.  My only complaint is that since it's essentially a dead product, no new case designs for it and the existing options all have issues.

James, Welcome to the Boards.  I'm glad your happy with your K1.  It is frustrating to have the K1 and know there will be no new cases introduced.  I am wondering which existing options have issues for you.  I had really great covers for my K1, and in fact, I miss my cover more than I miss my K1.  But my daughter is loving it, so I can at least visit.
Again, welcome to the Boards.  I hope you take tiem to introduce yourself in the introductions and welcome thread.

I am wondering which existing options have issues for you.

I currently use the M-Edge which is fantastic on one of my Kindles.  The newer one is entirely too small in the upper left which has the result of constantly pressing the previous page button while pulling away from the back.  Most other options are either way too expensive (more than half the cost of the Kindle itself???) or suffer from the same flaws as the Amazon cover.

Now that you mention it, I do remember the straps on the covers that I had pushed the buttons.
I solved the problem by taking the strap off of the K.  It still felt secure and the problem no
longer existed.
