How are your December sales going?
« on: December 11, 2011, 10:01:43 AM »
I'm tired of lurking KDP Select threads. All this debate gives me headaches.

Since I haven't seen any self-flagellating over December sales yet, how are you guys doing so far now that we're 1/3rd of the way through the month? I'm having a good month as far as number of copies goes, but the title selling well is only 99 cents, so it's not my best month for royalties. Getting close, though.

I'm doing fairly well on the one book because of the freebie I had. Otherwise this month would really be sucking bigtime, both on Amazon and B&N. It seems we haven't gotten a December bump yet, at least as far as I'm concerned, anyway.

Can't complain, a little up on last month and November was my best month so far.

All the best,

I'm having a great month due to a PoI feature on the third. It really bumped sales. While sales have settled out, my daily averages are now slightly higher than they were in Nov.

Kindle sales are miserable. Not that I'm surprised.

Paperback sales are up nicely. Not that I'm completely surprised. :)

(I'd been predicting no meaningful boost to ebook sales ahead of Christmas, but a boost in paperback sales, as more people gift paperbacks than ebooks.)

My (permanent) freebie on Amazon has had basically zero effect - a few hundred downloads in three weeks, no effect on sales of other titles, and not even the practically guaranteed review complaining about the length of a clearly-marked short story. :) It's like, I know I suck, but come on, people, work with me here...

I couldn't agree more although I'm going to mention KDP Select. :)

My Kindle sales are up more than 10% over November (which were up 30% over October). They have actually improved slightly since KDP Select went live in spite of only having 1 novel in KDP Select.

However, I have a couple of KND ads running today so I am anxiously watching that. So far the results are disappointing on the ads, but it is very early in the day.

For now, hitting my usual target with my front runner 'Depths of Deception' - which keeps gradually increasing. November was the best month ever - but I guess we'll see in a couple of weeks how December turns out. Noticed a 'hiccup' for a couple of days, I guess due to all the fiddling going on with Amazon and 'free.'

My first week and first book.

Barely any marketing at all and haven't really told my friends or family yet, so no down loads from them yet.

Anyhow, 6 downloads so far.

Not exactly viral lol, but I'm happy enough for my first few days.
The Infection Journal is a record of a survivor that documents the developments of the outbreak and the experiences that lead him to question the value of life in a world where society is descending into the darkness of a dead civilization.

Abysmal.

I've descended to yet another, lower level of non selling hell. With the dawning of each of the last 3 months, my sales have virtually halved overnight. At this rate, I'll probably get a bill from Amazon next month as I move into deficit figures.   :(

Will there even be a December bump? There are so many people self-publishing now that the 'pie' is not infinite. Mind you, I'm happy with my numbers, but I watch them get smaller every month and everyone mentions that they're just waiting for the next bump. This September wasn't like last September. This October wasn't like last October. This November wasn't like last November. Etc.

I would freaking LOVE a bump. But I'm thinking it's not something we should rely on.

And that being said, my sales are slow. :P  Down about 25% from last month.

I screwed up my sales by going free for a day, so I don't know.

My gut feeling is that I'm probably doing worse than Nov., by a little bit, but that could change.

I'd be happy without huge bumps in sales. If I could just trundle along at my modest August level, I'd be content. It's these elevator drops every first of the month that scare and befuddle me.

8.  ;D

Question: I've read that the average author sells 4-8 books their first month out. I tripled that number, so I'm a happy camper. What is the average for the second month out?

ETS, my first five months were 24-18-9-9-18 and then it hit a tipping point.

I was wrong -- Dec is doing better than Nov, financially. In Nov, by this time, I made $970. In Dec., the same length of time brought in $1100 at $3.99 per book.

I'm trying an experiment right now. I lowered the price to $2.99 temporarily, to see if sales pick up. To equal what I was making at $3.99, I have to sell 40-50 books a day at $2.99.

Right now, it looks like my sales numbers are staying the same, regardless of the price. But the day's not over yet.

But if the # stays between 25-30, then I'll set the price back to $3.99 and leave it there.

Note:  Not really crying...I just thought that smilie was so adorable, I had to use it.  Truthfully, my lack of sales are probably my own fault.  I've been so busy with other projects, I've done virtually no promotion.

I'm waiting for after Christmas when people get their new readers.  Hopefully we will all see a bump then.

I've still got the BBoS even after starting my Christmas sale and movie to .99 cents.

I moved 4 copies over at B&N. So I would say my sales have been... well I would have to have them to pick an adjective.

Well, this is my best month ever, so I can't complain :D I am expecting things to level off and slow down the week of Christmas though. My sales have continued to increase at all sites since I started in June and I keep waiting for the slow down, but it hasn't happened yet. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed and holding my breath that things continue to go well.

I'm still on a roll, thank goodness. I passed 2,000 sales during the night last night. The vast majority of those are my .99 Crazy Old Lady but I raised the prices on my 2 novels from $2.99 to $3.99 but they are still selling well and I raised one short story collection from $1.99 to $3.49 and it is actually doing better.

This is all a great cosmic mystery to me.

Sales of my latest book are running 50% above November, which was a darn good month. I just uploaded a cozy mystery and will be interested to see what it will do just by word of mouth because I haven't gotten organized enough to buy ads.

It's hard for me to judge, because my book was released in September and I only have the one book out.
Sales caught fire in mid-October and soared until Thanksgiving week. So November sales were fantastic.  It looks like the book peaked Thanksgiving week though and sales have slowly been dropping since. Each week its been selling about twenty books less than the week before it.

I would think that the fall in sales is simply because of it peaking- except I track all the books that were in the top ten romantic suspense with mine. And they are ALL sliding back at the same rate, or in some cases faster than mine is. There is a whole new batch of books in the top ten now. Several of them are Prime books, several are discounted traditional books, the rest are self-published original titles or blacklist titles that aren't on Prime.

It's interesting though, that all the titles that had been dominating the top ten for weeks, all got bumped out at virtually the same time and we all seem to be sliding back up in rank now at the same rate.

I sold ONE Kindle book in November and nothing so far this month. January was my best month last year. I'm not surprised as I don't do any marketing or advertising. I'm worried about being able to afford enough oil for this winter as our fuel assistance was cut in half this year.

No sales anywhere this month for me. I even offered to gift copies to a couple of distant e-book owning friends, neither of them took me up on it. Still hoping for things to turn around before the end of the year, though.  :)

I predicted December would be crappy for me, and it is.

I wanted to keep my freebie free until January, hoping that it would pull in some readers when people get Kindles at Christmas time, but with the whole Freepocalypse going on right now, I'm wondering if I should just start the process to get it back to paid. With a book ranked around 1200 in the free store, does anyone think it will still get a bump on the paid charts?

Anyway, I'm pretty convinced at this point that the only way I'm going to be able to ever quit my day job is to do one of two things:

1-Write series and do whatever I can to hook readers from one series to the next, all the while growing my email list. Maybe within a year or two, sales will grow and stabilize. (At the very least, I'll have more titles. Although it doesn't really matter if you have tons of titles if five of them sell relatively well and the other eleven sell less than 5 a month, I have found. People hop from one series book to the next, but not to standalones.)

2-Start writing lots of erotica. :P
