Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Software Update 5.8.7 is live. New font.

I guess I'll just have to wait for it to update on its own. Maybe something happened with the USB.

Pardon me if I'm stepping in where I shouldn't but in reading through the conversation, everyone keeps telling you to put the file into the root directory, assuming that you know what that is or how to find it.  The main thing is to just click anywhere on the F drive files - but NOT in a directory.  That is the root.  Just click outside of where the files are.  You can C for Copy or you can right click.  Then V for paste or again - right click.

I hope I haven't messed up things.

Anything Else Amazon / Re: KU vs KOLL vs Prime Reading -- a case study
« on: December 24, 2016, 10:39:02 AM »
Being a series-holic, I've noticed a lot of 'first book of a series' being on Prime Reading - a LOT!  I have then gone to KOLL and gotten the second book because it seems to me that everything that is in KU, is also in KOLL - just one book a month.  Keeping my fingers crossed that they don't do away with KOLL.  Someone asked to borrow a book from me.  It was lendable but in doing that research, it dawned on me that I had never bought a single one of this author's books.  And she's one of my favorite.  Stumbled across her on KOLL and started following her.  Now I follow too many Amazon authors to keep up with only using KOLL.  :)

If I've missed this somewhere, I apologize.  I saw on FB today on a page titled JustKindleBooks that Amazon is doing away with KOLL and the Prime Reading is going to replace it.  This isn't the way I understand it and it isn't the results I've seen so far.  Anyone know anything else about this?

My old eyes love this new font.  I find that with everything pertaining to the old, some days are better than others.  Some days my eyes don't want to see the Helvetica font on my Oasis so I switch to the Voyage.  Some days eyes are just tired and don't want to work so hard.  I can see this font being of great use to me.   ;D

That is why my Oasis was returned as well. I have a Voyage that is near perfect with a very even screen and great contrast. I also find the Origami case very useful. My Oasis had a fairly even screen but distracting light cones and the contrast wasn't quite as good as my Voyage. After trying to read on the Oasis for awhile I would switch back to the Voyage and it was like a night and day difference. I was still sad to have to return the cute little Oasis, but I don't need another "pet".  :)

I feel sad too, even decided to have another go at reading on it before it was boxed up.  My decision stands.  And yeah!  I don't need another "pet" either.   ;D

For what it's worth and keeping my post updated, I've decided to return the Oasis.  Shipping label done, package it up and drop off at UPS (around the corner from me) and $2.98 return shipping.  Reading all the discussions as I was waiting for it to arrive last Friday - 5/6 - I almost cancelled but thought better to wait and see it in the flesh.  I did.  It's great!!  But not for me.  Actually, the things people love about it are several of the things I'm not so excited about.  I thought the size would be a big selling point but I find it more difficult to handle than my Voyage.  The Voyage fits my hand.  I have a Fintie case for it but find that I just don't like it.  If I put the Voyage in to go outside the house, it gets taken out again as soon as possible.  Don't know if it was having the SO in place but I ended up having to cancel more than 1 sale transaction before it went through completely.  I have small hands but the bezel is so small that I would have to handle it constantly by the battery side.  Constantly!  That was one reason.  The next would be screen quality.  My Voyage is PERFECT!!!  That is MY Voyage and MY eyes think it's perfect.  The Oasis not so much.  It isn't bad but it appears to be a bit blotchy and the yellowish hue tends to wash out the contrast whereas the bluish hue of the Voyage appears much more even and the letters seem to "pop" off the page more.  Contrast is something my old eyes have got to have.  Battery life - I think my Voyage battery is quite good given the amount I read on it and if it needs to be charged, I'm mostly at home and can plug it into the wall any time.  AND I have my Paperwhite for a backup.  And then there's the cost.  This one just isn't worth it to me but I'm glad I got to hold its cute little self in my own hands and decide that for myself.

What Linjea said makes sense, especially since the software is the same on the Paperwhite, Voyage and now the Oasis.  I really do like the Oasis but am still in a decision making mode on whether it is worth the cost - for me.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Oasis Screen savers
« on: May 07, 2016, 06:19:10 AM »
I'm sure this has been asked somewhere but after looking and searching, I can't find it.  What are the screen savers like on the Oasis without special offers?

My Oasis arrived today and I am so in love.  I am one of the people with eye issues, both old and whatever so I was looking very closely at the quality of the screen.  My Oasis seems to be a bit bluer at the top and then warmer at the bottom BUT it changes.  And I haven't seen any of the side scallops.  All the time I've been reading other people's reviews, I've been saying that if the screen isn't equal to my Voyage, it will be going back.  I'll definitely keep a watch on the color because comparing to my Voyage right now, the screen isn't as uniform.  Other than that, everything is GREAT!!!  It seems to want to get along with me, i.e. the positions I read in.  The swapping hands (flipping it around) isn't a big deal and I plan on reading it nekkid so the direction of the cover opening isn't a problem.  I reversed the buttons and that is working for me.

It was roughly 60% charged when I took it out of the box.  Charged it a little bit but was too anxious to start messing around with it so stopped the charge - around 70% for each.  Took the Kindle out of the cover, reading and now the Oasis was down to 35% but once again, a legit reason.  I read for a while then downloaded all my Collections and then started downloading books in the first few Collections.

All in all, I do believe it's a keeper and that I'm in LOVE with this cute little thing!!!

Adding name to the watch.  Oasis, WiFi, special offers, black, delivery date - May 6.

I think you're right.  The cover charges through the Oasis when you plug in the USB to charge it.  Then as I read it, when you put the Oasis into the cover, the cover battery will recharge the Oasis.  At least I hope that's what this means since I plan to use the cover like a sleeve and read a nekkid Oasis.  "When on the go, the cover will automatically recharge the device...".  I'm hoping that means that it literally recharges, not just that the Oasis will pull power from the cover battery when needed.

Didn't think I would but after lots of research, I broke down and ordered.  I am in total agreement with Meemo.  No matter where I'm reading, the cover would be somewhere close around.  Then when I stopped reading (for whatever reason), I'd open the cover, pop the Kindle in and it could recharge until the next time I pick it up to read.  Sounds like the "killing 2 birds with 1 stone" thing to me.

Black case with S/O delivery date - May 6.  Order without S/O pushes delivery date to some time in June so I'll just buy them out when it arrives.  Like I usually do.   ;D

I think the OP decided and bought the Aura?  If not or if someone is looking I might have a coupon code for 10 percent off.  I'm a kobo associate and I posted some coupon codes a while back. Some of them may still be working.
Just curious, what is a Kobo Associate?  Reason I'm asking, I tried to actually see a Kobo a couple of years ago.  A bookstore near me was listed so I paid them a visit.  The owner had her own Kobo, which she had to hunt down in the store in order for me to see it.  But she didn't carry any stock.  And I see from the email confirming my purchase that everything is in Canada.  Also that Best Buy and Walmart IN CANADA carry them.  Strange!  Well, not strange that it is in Canada but strange that there's nothing in the U.S. and even stranger that I hadn't heard this before.  :)

I did see those and tried but they were no longer valid.  The Aura is currently $129, no tax and free shipping.  Looking forward to getting it.

Wow WDR!  What a lovely response.  The Kobo and Nook I can't tell you but with the Kindle, which is the only ereader I've ever owned, to date that is, as I ordered a Kobo Aura just this morning.  The ads you see on your Kindle are referred to as Special Offers.  You bought the Kindle at a reduced price.  At any time you can go to Manage My Kindle and buy out of that option.  Then the ad screen savers will go away, they will become pictures typically dealing with letters, typesetting, typewriter keys, etc.  The buy out is $20, I think.  Also, when you do that and open the cover of your Kindle, it automatically goes to the place you were at when you closed it last.  Some people like the ads, others don't.  Also there are a bazillion ways to see things on your Kindle PW.  Settings is the place to be.

I think we are using the word "library" differently.  I'm talking about borrowing books from the public library, I'm thinking you are talking about the contents of your ereader.  As I buy my books from Amazon, they are all Mobi format.  I want an ePub format ereader as ALL the books from the public library are in ePub format.  Not all are in Kindle format.

Thank you so much for your reply.  That took a LONG time to do and I really appreciate it.

Also, I find the library interface on the Kobo to be better than the Amazon or Nook.

How so, WDR?  Sorry, I'm being really dense but my brain is of the hands-on variety and I can't hands on.  lol

Yes tablets can do it and are multi purpose devices....I really prefer my single purpose e-ink devices. I love the size of my Kobo Aura. If the Kobo Mini was lighted, it would be even better. If Amazon would make a Aura or Mini sized eink reader, I would have one. Even the Voyage is too large, compared to them.

It's really smaller than the Voyage?  I've been researching on the Kobo website and saw the mini but I see it is no longer available.  Plus my old eyes are becoming very dependent on the light.

For those who suggested a tablet, I have an iPad Mini.  I love it, don't get me wrong.  But I don't love it to read on.  It's too heavy.  And then there's the glare.  This is all so subjective to the way we hold our device.  If sitting up reading then of course, it's fine... great!  If laying down in bed, it gets a bit more complicated, for me anyway with the glasses and getting the angle right.  If you've been there, you understand...  if not, I don't think it's possible.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

I have Overdrive for iPad but don't use it much so I'm not real knowledgeable about this stuff.  Does going through Overdrive mean you can borrow books directly from the Kobo?  I have no problem using PC and USB, just wondering.  Thanks again.

As I start reading more library books, I find my library being slower to have Kindle format ebooks so I've been thinking about getting another device.  I'm thinking probably Kobo as Nook seems to be falling way behind.  Anybody have an opinion?  Thanks.

I have this one and i like it. I have the Finti too. The ACase seems stronger to me.

It arrived a couple of hours ago and so far it is fantastic!  I've seen reviews that complained the case is too thick for no apparent reason.  I see the reason, it makes the entire case not only stronger but more stable.  Sure, the front cover doesn't stay perfectly aligned at all times but neither does the Amazon PW one - which is the main case I am comparing to.  The "sky blue" color is beautiful too.  My favorite color - somewhere between aqua and turquoise.  I think I finally have a winner!  Thanks again, Kathy for your opinion.  It really helped me to make the decision.

I ordered the ACcase today in Sky Blue, shelled out for the fast shipping so it will be here Monday.  Keeping my fingers crossed although nekkid isn't too bad, at least for the time being as far as reading is concerned.  Kinda scares me though in terms of being dropped.  I'll report back after I've used it for a couple of days.  Thanks to all who responded.

Thanks, Kathy.  I have been looking at that one.  One problem I had with the Fintie was the front flap moving around when I was holding it in my left hand while reading.  My hands are small and it just wasn't a... hmmm.... how to say... firm grip.  I'm gonna shut up cause I'm really not sure how to describe it.  It feels thick too.  What is your experience with "handling" the ACcase?
