The Book Bazaar / When A Superhero Has a Mid-Life Crisis
« on: September 01, 2014, 03:03:20 PM »
What happens when a superhero endures a midlife crisis?

As Powerhouse, Dave Johnson has become a local legend in Seattle but choruses of voices advise him that he’s wasting his time defending the Emerald City. He’s urged to take on more ambitious goals like defending New York, being a full-time comic book executive, or becoming a bat-breaking evangelist. These questions are pushed into the background when Powerhouse is confronted with an unprecedented crime wave launched by the interdimensional warlord Varlock as part of his effort to help King Bel conquer the Earth.

At the same time, Naomi Johnson secretly possesses her husband’s super powers. When her work slows down during the summer, the Johnson children depart to summer camp, and Dave is never home due to the crime wave., she assumes a new identity in Wyoming as Marie Dubois and becomes a vigilante known as Justice Woman. In the course of this, she confronts her unfulfilled hopes and dreams, and her unresolved anger.

While Powerhouse is pushed to the point of physical and mental collapse by Varlock’s scheme, Naomi has to decide whether she’ll go back to her old life or chart a new course. How she decides will affect her, her family, and the entire world.

Ultimate Mid-life Crisis is the four Powerhouse book and is available here.

I'm looking at doing a three book box set and I'd heard there had been some problem with box set covers and Amazon/KDP. Does anyone know what the guidelines are for boxset covers.

The Book Bazaar / Download a Free Review Copy of Superhero Comedy
« on: April 06, 2014, 10:25:20 PM »
Quote
Dave Johnson's dreams have come true. He's taken Seattle by storm as Powerhouse, a metal-clad crime fighter. His awesome array of powers has the underworld on the run, his charitable efforts are a success, and he has a popular comic book. When his publisher is bought out, he's given every fan's dream: he's tasked with creating his own line of comic books. His biggest problem is his tendency to attract campy, wannabe "supervillains" who aren't worthy opponents.

Mitch "the Pharaoh" Farrow wants to turn Dave's dream into a nightmare. Mitch's job is to spread cynicism ahead of an interdimensional alien invasion. The aliens' king has promised to cure Mitch's dying daughter when he takes over and Mitch will do anything to save her. He uses every tool at his disposal, from a massive media smear machine to a force field bubble that crushes its victim into atoms.

With help from his friends, Powerhouse strives to protect his family and the citizens of Seattle from the forces of cynicism.

The book is available for free as a download from Story Cartel.

Writers' Cafe / Mystery/Political Thriller Book Covers
« on: February 02, 2014, 07:57:17 PM »
I've written Speculative Fiction before and I'm finishing up my first detective story/political thriller and I'm trying to figure out the cover.

My observation here is that the demands for Mystery book covers and particularly political thrillers seem to be far less exacting than in Sci Fi. Most have been somewhat straightforward with the Presidential Seal or a picture of the Capitol. How much detail would be necessary? Is there a big difference created by genre.

Writers' Cafe / Library Price on Smashwords
« on: January 24, 2014, 11:55:43 AM »
I just noticed the Library Rate on Smashwords which is the rate libraries pay to purchase your ebooks.

I had two questions on this. First, has anyone actually seen any money from Library Direct or Bakery-Taylor 360 for this through Smashwords?

Secondly, Smashwords has the option of setting a different library rate. Has anyone had any success in doing that.

Writers' Cafe / Story Cartel: Amazon Gift Certificate v. Kindle
« on: December 29, 2013, 06:43:31 AM »
I ran one book on Story Cartel and got decent results (net four or five reviews on the book). Now, I'm thinking about running another promotion and was wondering if anyone has tried doing Story Cartel with a Kindle as the drawing prize as opposed to five copies of the book or a 3 $10 gift certificates and if they'd gotten better results with one prize or with another.

Writers' Cafe / Audiobook Sales from Free Days
« on: October 13, 2013, 08:24:24 AM »
I did a free day, October 9th and 10th. There were no bounceback sales. However, I've sold 6 audiobook copies on Audible through ACX. Most likely this is related  to the Whispersync arrangement where a customer can by the Audio copy of a book they've purchased for the Kindle for $1.99.

The downside is that you've sold both Audiobook and paperback for 50 cents royalty when you're done splitting your profits with the producer. On the bright side, I can't help but think the audiobook copy increases the odds of people actually listening to the story, plus ACX royalties are stepped. The more copies you sell, the higher percentage of royalties you get.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Writers' Cafe / Trade you a Review (Clean Sci-Fi and Mystery Shorts)
« on: September 29, 2013, 06:51:28 AM »
In my experience, It's hard to get reviews on shorts. I have a recent Science/Detective story I've released and need reviews for. It's located here. It's about 10,000 words long.

I'm willing to review other shorts in exchange for an honest review of mine. If you're interested, please download the sample for the Kindle and take a look at it.  If it looks like something you could enjoy, private message me and I'll take a look at your work of 20,000 words or less and I'll take a look at your sample. If it looks like something I'd be able to give a good review to, we can exchange reviews.

Primarily, I'm looking for clean science fiction or mystery, or a combination of both. (i.e. limited swearing, no graphic violence, or graphic sex.) I also can review a general Christian fiction short if the writer thinks my story would work for them.

Writers' Cafe / Blurb Help, Please
« on: September 01, 2013, 07:34:20 PM »
Here's my current blurb for my time travel detective story. I'd love your feedback on it:

He thought it’d be a simple case that would pay the bills. That’s why ex-cop turned private investigator Jerry Newton agreed to protect a teacher who’d received some threatening letters. He couldn't know that someone would bomb the teacher’s car. He didn't expect to meet a mysterious woman who’d  reveal the future to him.

He didn't plan on ever coming to grips with his past. And he never expected to debate the merits of putting a bullet through a man’s skull to prevent a series of heinous crimes. This by the book detective faces the most difficult decision of his career in this emotionally charged novelette.

Note: This is the current version of the blurb.

Writers' Cafe / The Most Pointless One Star Review
« on: July 25, 2013, 09:18:01 PM »
The following review was posted on my book.

The heading was, "Not My Cup of Tea."

The review reads in total:

"Not as good as I had hoped from the title, but perhaps I didn't read far enough. Check out the other comments."

I'm not even certain what to do with this review.  It's barely over the 20 word minimum and if you remove the sentence, "Check out the other comments," you're actually under 20.

Writers' Cafe / How to Get a New Edition Email
« on: June 12, 2013, 11:59:58 AM »
I received an email about a free book I downloaded that a new edition had been updated.

How do you get one of those emails sent? I have an idea of a couple ideas of things to add including a deleted alternate ending and a preview of the next book.

How do I do that in a way that'll get Kindle users who've downloaded it notified?

Writers' Cafe / Need Someone to Draw Picture for Cover
« on: April 16, 2013, 05:27:44 AM »
I'm looking for someone to draw a picture for a cover of an upcoming book. It's a Superhero story and maybe some comic book style would be helpful. If you have suggestions respond on the thread with potential artists or private message me. I don't have a big budget, but I'm willing to pay.

I also have someone who's willing to take the picture and make it into cover if the artist doesn't design covers in general.

Writers' Cafe / To Extend....Or Not to Extend (KDP)

Usually, the first day of a KDP give away is the best for me. This time I began on Wednesday and gave away around 250 copies and on day 2, that's doubled. I'm to #303 in the Kindle Free store and I'm debating whether I should add another free day (I have 3 extra days that I won't use by the end of my current KDP enrollment) or let it in. What say you?
