Anything Else Amazon / Echo Show lyric question
« on: October 13, 2017, 06:28:15 AM »
I just bought an Echo Show. After all the bad reviews I read I wasn't sure what to expect, but it turned out to be a lot nicer than I thought it was going to be. I use it mostly for music and the stereo speakers sound much better than my Echo and gives it more bass. The only thing I'm finding weird is that when the lyrics are showing all the explicit lyrics are blocked out. This doesn't happen on my Fire tablet. Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere where I can turn the censorship feature off?

Other (non-Kindle) eReaders / Kobo Aura HD - WOW!
« on: December 04, 2013, 08:44:23 AM »
I broke down and bought a Kobo Aura HD yesterday and I can't believe how nice this thing is. The 6.8" high res screen really makes a difference, yet the HD is only a little bigger than my pw2. It fits in a slip cover I'd bought originally for my kindle. It's got many nicer features than my kindle like more fonts which you can adjust to the size and weight you want. No more in between fonts that are too small or large. The reading stats are great, showing things like time left in chapter, next chapter and book. I also like that it shows the book title at the top of the screen and the chapter # and title along with the pages in the chapter, like Page 3 of 23 at the bottom. You have more control over line and margin spacing, too. The lighting is just perfect. Side by side it looks better than my pw2. I've held off getting this because I'm so heavily invested in Amazon's ecosystem, but I finally figured out that it really doesn't matter where I buy books. I'm still going to buy kindle books, too. The Aura HD is just a beautiful, well thought out ereader. Does anybody else have one?

Fire Talk / Email Problem
« on: July 10, 2013, 09:39:48 AM »
My new 8.9" HD has been working great for the last week. I turned it on this morning and it wouldn't get my Gmail accounts. Tried deleting them but now can't reinstall them. Tried a different imap acct and it worked fine. Gmail is working on my phone. Anybody have any suggestions? Would very much appreciate your help. Thanks.

Let's Talk Kindle! / New Android Kindle App
« on: April 26, 2013, 07:30:52 AM »
Has anybody tried it yet? It seems to work okay on my Samsung Galaxy S3, but it's a little buggy on my Nexus 7 which crashes every time I try to select All. It now has the Carousel which is kind of nice to play around with. What I don't like about it is that when you go to Books and select Cloud, everything shows up, including all the books you've already downloaded. If you have any books you want to download to your device you have to look through your entire list for the ones without a check mark. Even trying to sort by Recent doesn't bring your newest purchases to the top, so it can be a real PITA. It looks like it will be nice when they work out the bugs, but right now it's a little frustrating to use.

Let's Talk Kindle! / New Paperwhite Update (5.3.5) just released.

This just came out. Don't know exactly what it's for. This is from Amazon:

We have a new, free software update available for Kindle Paperwhite. The software update will be delivered wirelessly and includes general improvements for your Kindle Paperwhite. This update automatically downloads and installs for Kindle Paperwhite customers; however, you can also manually download the software and update your device via USB cable.

Here's the link:

Edit -- 5.3.4 released in mid March, 5.3.5 released in late April  -- link should take you to most recent version. -- Ann

The Book Corner / Male Authors vs. Female Authors
« on: March 02, 2013, 06:48:11 AM »
I find that I tend to relate better with the writing styles of male writers than with female writers, though I do read both. I've also noticed that you can generally tell when a woman is writing under a male pseudonym because of the style. One of the biggest differences is in how they develop characters. Women tend to really get into the "feelings" of their characters where male authors avoid that to a point, which I think is pretty true in real life. So I was just curious as to whether the men and women here tend to stick with their gender when it comes to reading books, or does it not really matter to you?

Let's Talk Kindle! / Amazon Customer Service
« on: March 01, 2013, 05:03:46 PM »
Amazon is probably the best company I've ever dealt with, but I just went through something that wasn't much fun. This morning I ordered a Paperwhite 3G, a cover, and I went ahead and ordered another power adapter since they're $9.99 when ordered with the Kindle and I've had mine since the K1.

Anyway, I put the Kindle and the adapter in my cart, then placed the cover in my cart and checked out. I have Prime and I checked the shipping costs which were free 2-day, $3.99 for Monday and $8.99 for Saturday. I decided to go for Saturday. It calculated my total and showed $8.99 for Saturday delivery and I clicked to submit the order.

Three hours later I get an email saying the Kindle shipped and the others are shipping soon. The invoice showed $8.99 for shipping. This afternoon I get a notice that the other two had shipped and were shipped in one box. Shipping charges were $17.98. I called Amazon and after about 15 minutes the answer was that it didn't matter what my order said when I placed it, or whether or not everything comes in the same box, they charge $8.99 for each item shipped. So, place one order for 10 items shipped in one box and they will charge you $89.99 shipping. That's their policy and that's what I would pay no matter what the order said when I submitted my order. End of call.

I then got an email asking if that solved my problem. I clicked NO and was taken to the website where I gave them all 1 stars and left some negative feedback. It also said that they would like to get another chance to solve the problem and asked if they could call me back. I said Yes and a few seconds later I got another call. The lady was very nice and explained again that that was their policy and I explained again why I thought it was wrong. That's when I got the surprise. She then said that since I was such a good customer that she was going to refund my shipping charges. On all three items.

So, while I don't at all like that I was charged 3 times what the invoice said when I placed the order I do have to say that Amazon is very good at making things right. Refunding all the shipping charges was more than any other company would ever do.

I've never used Calibre before, but I just downloaded it because I've got tons of non-DRM EPUB books that I'd like to start converting to Mobi. I just tried it and I think it worked okay, but my question is about the files it generated. There are three:

Do I need to copy all three files to my Kindle for each book?

Other (non-Kindle) eReaders / Nook / Kindle Power Adapters
« on: February 01, 2013, 05:15:43 AM »
I'm picking up a Nook Simple Touch today for my ereader collection.  :)  Anyway, it doesn't come with a power adapter so does anyone know if my Kindle PW adapter will work okay with the Nook? I don't want to spend another ten dollars if I don't have to.

The Book Corner / Trilogies and Series
« on: January 01, 2013, 07:51:46 AM »
I have a lot of trouble keeping up with trilogies and series. Maybe I read too many books, but after awhile I tend to forget about them and never catch up. I also forget so much of the previous books that it usually makes the newer books less entertaining. For the most part if I see a completed series I might buy it, but if it's book 1, I just let it go. I don't know why so many authors now break everything into trilogies. I guess it's a money thing. Why sell one book when you can sell three? I do appreciate authors like Stephen King who write very long books and don't break them up. I know he has had a series or two in the past, but as long as most of his books are, he could do like most others and break them all up. Does anybody know of a way to track and keep up with a series? Usually by the time the next one comes out I've forgotten all about the previous one.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Paperwhites being shipped early!
« on: December 05, 2012, 04:26:35 AM »
I just got notified from Amazon that my KPW will arrive Dec. 10 instead of Dec. 24. Good news, indeed! Looks like an early Christmas this year.  ;D

Let's Talk Kindle! / Too many devices
« on: November 23, 2012, 04:33:34 PM »
I've got a Kindle Touch and I'm thinking about getting a Paperwhite. I just transferred all my books to my Nexus 7 and got a message on a few of them that I couldn't download them because I had them on too many devices. I had to delete them on another device to be able to get them all. I thought that was strange. I bought them, so I should be able to read them wherever I want. I thought that's the whole point of getting the Kindle apps and whispersync. Anyway, does anybody know if I have to do that again if I buy a new Kindle?
