Writers' Cafe / Using Thumbtack to Find Editors?
« on: May 19, 2018, 08:29:54 AM »
Hello, Fellow KBoarders!

I don't know if any of you have used or plan to use Thumbtack to find an editor or proofreader, but as a listed Pro, I wanted to alert you to how the fee schedule works on our end.

They are in the middle of transitioning from Pros spending about $14 just to send a quote to a new arrangement in which the Pro sends a quote at no charge and only pays a fee to Thumbtack if the potential customer responds.  There are a couple of problems with this new system.  The first is that the Pro does not know ahead of time how much the contact is going to cost; it's theoretically based on the "value" of the job.  For instance, I quoted $100 to proofread a magazine article.  Surprise, my contact cost me $38!  The second issue is that unless the customer's first message says, "No thanks," the Pro gets charged some random fee. My "positive" response consisted of, "Thanks, Julie.  I'm out of town, I'll take a look at your website on Friday."

So, as a listed Pro (for the time being, anyway), I'm asking all you kind people who use Thumbtack to keep this in mind when you receive quotes. Being polite without clearly stating you're not interested will cost the Pro.  If you look at a quote and think it's too high, or you look at the Pro's profile and don't like what you see, please either do not respond to the quote or make sure that your response is clearly a rejection.  Otherwise the Pro is going to spend some unknown amount of money with no serious chance of landing any work.

Thanks for listening!

MegaCon is sort of a ComicCon.  A nerd convention of popular culture, mostly sci-fi, fantasy.  TV, comics, movies, and some authors.  I go for fun and also hand out my business cards. You never know who's going to need a copy editor.

So, now you know!

The next time a client questions me (which is fine) because Word put a squiggly red line under something, I'm going to reply with this piece of nonsense from Word.

Don't rely solely on Word. People beat out software every time. Well, at least I do.

Now scheduling for an opening in June, then September and later.
Self-publishing should still be quality publishing.
