Writers' Cafe / Decent Sci-Fi Premade Covers for <$50?
« on: February 10, 2018, 07:50:09 AM »
Hello all,

I have an idea I want to play around with, but donít want to commit too much cash to yet. Iím in the market for a cheap, decent premade cover in the sci-fi genre (no hard abs - not sic-if romance). Iíve searched extensively in Google and our own Yellow Pages and have only come up with one contender. Iíve also searched a tiny bit through Fiverr (my first time, so the search-fu may be weak with this one), and most of the cover designers there that Iím seeing at first blush seem to be more in the UF/PNR and non-fiction genres.

Any leads from some Kboarders?

Cheap would be $50 or less. Decent to me is something that could sell - good typography, doesnít need to be fancy but does need to be sci-fi genre appropriate. A company/person who is easy to work with and responsive is always a bonus.

EDIT: The $50 limit does NOT need to include print/wraparound. Be nice if it does, but wouldnít expect that at $50 or less.

Thanks so much.

Writers' Cafe / What is your #1 goal for your writing?
« on: July 31, 2017, 04:27:33 AM »
Sometimes, when I read these threads on being "successful" at writing, I see a variety of responses that indicate that we've got a lot of goals across the KBoards authors for what they really want to be doing with their writing. I was really curious to see the spread!

Remember, focus on your #1 or top goal. I know some of us may have multiple goals, but I was curious as to what really drives you to sit behind the Writing Implement of Choice and bang out a story.

Writers' Cafe / POLL: What's Your Author Rank?
« on: February 25, 2017, 05:25:43 AM »
To follow up on this thread:

http://www.kboards.com/index.php/topic,248020.0.html

A poll about your overall Author Rank of your best performing name right now.

I was pouring over some threads on the May 2016 Author Earnings Report yesterday, so I'm in a data-gathering frame of mind. Plus, some may be more comfortable with the anonymity the poll provides.

We could keep the discussion over on the other thread, and this could be the data-crunching poll.

Writers' Cafe / Writing Ergonomics ?
« on: January 16, 2017, 05:32:30 PM »
Hi all,

As I am getting into the habit of cranking out 1.5 - 1.7 k words per hour, I need advice and thoughts on writing ergonomics to save my poor forearms.  :o

I have a laptop and I write lying down on the couch. I LOVE writing lying down. It may be the rebel in me, but something about sitting at a chair is so ergh to me. I may have to move to sitting at a chair to spare my forearms, but I'd like to hear what everyone's experience has been.

For the typists, what's your setup? What position do you type in? How are you attuned to any ergonomics? Any products you'd recommend for saving the wrists and forearms?

Anyone else lie down while writing and have a good setup?

If you want to share a photo of your writing space, DO!

Thanks, all!

Writers' Cafe / Writing Resolutions and Goals for 2017
« on: December 30, 2016, 04:20:05 AM »
Hi all! I'm a newbie here, so I hope I've followed all the forum rules and guidelines. I am a long-time lurker, over 8 months.  The amount of information and assistance here is incredible. I hope I can contribute in some small way!

I came across the Writing Goals for 2016 thread, and I thought it'd be a good idea to have a Writing Resolutions for 2017 thread, too, for some additional accountability.

I figured I could revisit this thread in a year's time, and we could see how much progress we made on our resolutions and goals! So, let's keep it feasible!

I prefer the term "Resolutions" because it seems more concrete to me - as if you've resolved with an iron will contained in an iron fist - shaking that iron fist at the stormy skies that would pour upon the tortured writer to keep them from starting their journey! - to do something, rather than "Goals", but some of you may resonate more with the term "goals", so go for it!

Dax's Resolutions for 2017
I plan to self-publish my first book in 2017, and plan to self-publish 5 other books across 2 series (same genre, same pen name, in Select).

I will establish a mailing list from the get-go, use preorders, and update my backmatter regularly.

I will write at least 1,000  new words every day and check into the "Thousand Words a Day Club" for 2017 thread every day with a count over 1k.

What are your writing goals and resolutions?

Many thanks to this great community. I plan to start a new (only one!) thread when I put my Book 1, Series A up for release, to keep me accountable to this community and answer the question if a newbie author following the KBoards advice can still make it in 2017. I'll update that thread as the year progresses.  I look forward to being a guinea pig, or a spectacular and entertaining trainwreck if it all goes sideways.

Happy writing, and Happy New Year to all!
