The leather bound editions and the auction sound exciting! Wish I could participate, but I've just relocated to New Mexico and moving expenses have me pretty much broke for now.  Good luck everyone! I hope you get the edition numbers your hearts desire!

$9.99 for 41 pages seems a bit... steep.

Mobipocket Creator will import a Microsoft Word file and Caliber will not

Haven't tried a doc file lately, but Calibre will import and convert rich text files nicely.  You can always save your word doc as a rich text file first.  Make sure you're on the latest version of Calibre.

You can sideload Dolphin Browser HD from the 1mobile market.  Point your Silk browser to and install the appstore, then search on dolphin browser.  Works fine on my Kindle 8.9 and I prefer it over the built-in browser.

You could always buy the Kindle with special offers and then opt out later if the ads bother you.  The net cost is the same, and that way you don't spend the extra $20 unnecessarily.

That being said, I did opt out of special offers almost immediately and haven't regretted it.  I love opening my kindle cover directly to content rather than a swipe screen.  If you follow Kindle Boards or other blogs, you're certain to find out about the best special offers and can opt in long enough to sign up then opt back out - no additional charges.

Fire Talk / Re: Kindle Fire HD Convince Me?

What I love to do is read my books, watch movies, take photo's and check email.

You should know that the Kindle Fire only has a front-facing camera.  It's great for Skype and self portraits, but rather awkward for taking pictures of anything else.  I wouldn't plan to use the Kindle as a substitute camera.

That being said, I love my Kindle Fire HS 8.9 for email, movies, games, etc.  I do most of my reading on my Paperwhite, but the KF works great for that as well - for Amazon Kindle books.  For other formats you'll have to sideload a reader as well as the books themselves, but it can be done.  Movies - Amazon Prime is awesome! and the selection seems like it grows daily.

Five of the six "good" figurines are pretty obvious...  Gaelen, Nelwyn, Orogond, Galador, Fima - and possibly Lady Ordath
For the "bad" guys - definitely an Olca, possibly a Troll, Wrothgar...  not sure about the rest.  Will have to wait on suggestions from some of Archer's other readers..

CC I sent you a pm

Also contact me if you are interested in becoming part of online “street team”.  This is a very cool opportunity for the die-hard fans who want to read things before they are published, get cool swag like awesome posters, buttons, bookmarks and maybe even some jewelry thrown in there.

Hi Nancy, and welcome to Kindleboards! I'm curious what an online "street team" does...  could be interesting, and I'm guessing you'll get several inquiries at least from Archer's family of friends/fans here!

The Book Corner / Re: Looking for a Christmas book
« on: December 20, 2012, 10:11:47 AM »
I can recommend a few...

The Christmas Train by David Baldacci
A Dog Named Christmas by Greg Kincaid, with two sequels - Christmas with Tucker and A Christmas Home.

No spoilers, but I will say that the dog stories end well - these are nice Christmas stories, not heart-wrenching animal tales... (tho must admit the last one is next up on my TBR list, so I can't say for certain on that one)

Fire Talk / Re: Some questions about the HD 8.9

For the two of you who send me a question. I am not a medical doctor. While it is true that I am a doctor, it is not medical, it is in theoretical physics.

The price creep on these cases is interesting to watch.  For what it's worth, I ordered one to go with my Kindle Fire HD 8.9 and it's already on the way back to Amazon for two reasons:

First and foremost, I could not get the keyboard to work - I think I had a defective unit.  After charging, or even while still plugged in, the keyboard would not stay turned on.  When switched to the ON position, the blue light would glow for a few seconds and then turn off. I never achieved a connection.

IF the keyboard had worked, I might have kept the cover for travel use or to use the keyboard separately from the case, but I found the case too heavy and bulky for everyday (around the house) use.  Amazon has me spoiled with their sleek lightweight leather covers...

I'm now thinking about a bluetooth thumb board, though I haven't seen any reviews of devices that were actually working with the KFHD.  If anyone is aware of one, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

I could have gone all day without seeing that deal! Been waffling over whether I really needed a new Kindle Fire... and that was just too good to pass up! I'm really looking forward to the additional real-estate.

Hmmm for me it would depend on the degree of "steam" you're talking about.  IMHO some things should remain behind closed doors.  I don't really enjoy reading voyeuristic stories...

Ah well... Amazon is still showing Dec 18 release date, but I can wait.  Mostly I'm excited to have it on Kindle already!

Just in case you missed the new thread, Archer left us some awesome news here:

Happy Birthday Kindleboards!

You've made your first sale of the new Kindle book, too - wonder if I was the first to buy it?  I'm in between books at the moment, so Elfhunter has moved to the top of my reading list - will be digging in later today, I think.

I noticed also that the paper copy will be out before Christmas!  I'll be getting two copies - one for my personal collection, and one for a young reader I know that is going to love Alterra!  I'd like to give her a signed copy - will be in touch with you via pm closer to publication date.

Awesome news!

If you sideload books, covers are a bit of a nightmare, so I've given up with cover view and I use list view.

DRM-free books, sideloaded using the current update of Calibre, have no problems with displaying covers as long as you have reformatted the book to .mobi or .azw3 (even if it was already in that format).

I love love love the cover view, so nice to see what a book looks like again!

I've had my KPW for a month now and still love just about everything about it. My Kindle Keyboard left for Canada with my sister the day after the KPW arrived.

Don't think anyone has mentioned this yet - I started with PW SO and decided to opt out of special offers.  WITH special offers and the Amazon cover, you open the cover, Kindle turns on to special offer, and you swipe to open to your books.  WITHOUT special offers, using the Amazon cover, you open the cover and the Kindle automatically opens to your books!  No more swiping!

(Have a great day, Archer!!)
