Google play App Store :

What's New
You can now read using left-aligned (ragged right) text instead of justified (aligned on both left and right margin). This new alignment option can be selected from the Display Settings (Aa) menu within Kindle books that support Enhanced Typesetting. On the Kindle eBook Store page, look for "Enhanced Typesetting: Enabled" in the features list.
Additional information
July 27, 2017

My android kindle app updated a few days ago to version (though it still lists the 27th of July on the play store as the last time the kindle app was updated by Amazon)
What's new : "Several experience improvements and bug fixes."

To those affected, is it usually just the first in a series (if you have a series) or is it just random?

One of my standalone books that is due to auto renew today is affected. Everything looks fine on the KDP dash, but on, it's only available to buy.

Businesses under 2 mill turnover normally operate on a cash basis, which would be when the funds hit your account. That way you will not get taxed on earnings you haven't received.

That makes sense, much appreciated.

Hi Samuel,

Just a quick question.

What date does the ATO consider that we have earned our money from Amazon?

- Is it on the 15th when Amazon tells us what we have earned?
- Is it on the 29th when Amazon sends us our payments (for the month in question)?
- Or is it the date that the money reaches our account? (be it cheque or EFT)

The reason I'm asking is because of the below two scenarios.

a)  What happens if a payment is sent from Amazon that spans two financial years. Does it belong to the current financial year in which it arrives or do you work out what percentage of the payment belongs to each financial year and apply as appropriate.

b) If you get a cheque that was a payment for the '14-'15 financial year, but don't deposit it until the start of the '15-'16 financial year, which financial year does it belong too? (I guess it depends on what date the ATO officially says that we have earned our money)

Is it because someone bought a copy?
I just noticed that the first erotica short I published is at the top. Someone just bought a copy a few hours ago.
Or maybe it's just amazon being amazon.

What makes separate short stories more profitable than collections? Is it because buyers feel more confident when trying out a new author, so they stick with single stories because they're cheaper?

The general feeling is that, people who buy singles are not the same as those who buy bundles.... though like all things in life, YMMV.

I have to update my tax interview in KDP although  it says "complete" and it won't let me put in my EIN because I'm an individual because they've redesigned the tax forms or something from my 5 mins of googling about it.

Has anyone had this happen to them? I'm thinking I should just tick I only have a non-US tax id (eg my Aussie TFN) instead of ticking I have a US TIN (my EIN) and a non US one, (my Aussie TFN)  because it won't accept the EIN.

And in the tax interview info on KDP it says individuals can't use EINs.

Use your Aussie TFN. (this is what I did as I had the same issue you did regarding KDP and my EIN)
Using the Aussie TFN will take your with holding tax from 30% to 5%

awesome, 80K!

Writers' Cafe / Re: A question about MailChimp
« on: September 23, 2014, 05:16:00 AM »

I've just spent the last hour researching this very topic.

Basically due to CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 you need to have on your emails a mailing address.  Which sucks as I'm not from the US, but to use mail chimp I still need to provide a mailing address that goes out on any emails I send out to my subscribers.

- Fake address, but if you get caught there are pretty harsh penalties. Not sure that anything could happen to me since I'm not from the US, but I'm not going to risk it.
- Use another address that you get permission to use, but if the address is not really associated with your activity then you could get in trouble.
- Get a PO BOX
- You could use a mail forwarding company
- Use a virtual mail box like which is what I'll be doing.

The only down side I can see from using such a service is that if someone decides to bombard your virtual PO BOX with mail it may end up costing you some $'s as they charge by how much mail they receive. Hence why I'm going to be signing up with a prepaid visa card. Worst thing that can happen is that my virtual PO BOX gets frozen if my prepaid card is out of cash. Rather that than having my normal visa card charged with massive fees. Though I don't ever expect to ever get a single piece of mail, but better safe than sorry.

EIN issue here, can anyone help out?

I've just been issued an EIN so no worries there.

But it seems that when I go and fill in my tax info on KDP and select the correct options, it will not allow me to use an EIN as I don't run a US business. It will allow me to enter my Aussie tax number though. Doing so says that the amount of tax that they will withhold will be set at 5% as per the tax treaty. Is this the rate that the rest of you guys are being charged?

When I say yes I do run a US based business I can use my EIN, but it doesn't say anything about what the withholding rate will be.

So since I want to do this correctly I'm going to ignore the fact that I have EIN and just go with using my Aussie tax number and the 5% withholding tax, unless someone can point out why not.

There's a thread here somewhere on this when it happened. I did a search and couldn't find it easily. It might have been buried in some other thread.

Could you give me some advice on my books? Read your post and literally just starting putting out books a week ago. Already have four up.

Here's a link to all my books:

Do you think I'm pricing too high or I just need to give it more time? Only sold 3 books so far, two when i had the price at 2.99 and one when i lowered it down to 99 cents. Also when I gave it away for free I had over 100 downloads but then changed it to be priced again.

Also I am planning on continuing the series to at least 15-21 books as I think it is most marketable to do a series. And yes my primary concern/interest is to profit as much as I can from the books so any advice you have will be greatly appreciated.

I think one of your issues is that book 1 and book 2 have been adult filtered by Amazon. Book 3 and the bundled set appear to have escaped the filter.
