Writers' Cafe / Re: Announcement from Amazon re Kindle Scout and ABNA
« on: January 19, 2015, 10:25:48 PM »
I don't think it was an interest-level issue so much as a resources/investment issue. They have Kindle Scout now, which is kindofsortof like ABNA...but with publishing contracts that offer much, much lower advances ($1500 instead of $15,000/$50,000), which either saves them money or allows them to publisher a greater number of books from the same cash outlay. It looks like it takes less work to run on Amazon's part, so there's that savings too. And possibly Kindle Scout isn't getting enough interest, so by taking ABNA away they hope to funnel more people toward their newer pet project.

Kindle Scout doesn't interest me a bit. At the moment, it's got fewer genres than the ABNAs had, and the advance is just... Yeah. No thanks.

The advance is low but the royalties are 50%! That's way higher than the normal trad deals. :) xx

Writers' Cafe / Re: Is a Kirkus review worth it?
« on: October 29, 2014, 09:58:08 PM »
I had one and wouldn't recommend. Not only was it very expensive, but the review, even though it was good, gave me nothing quotable because of the way it was written so it was a total waste of money :) xx

Woo hoo! Fabulous, congrats Jana! :) xx

I'd be happy to contribute something. Instead of the Naked Chef, it could be the Naked Author! ;) xx

Writers' Cafe / Re: Psssst! It's Harvey's Birthday Today!

Happy Birthday, Harvey! Hope you have a fab day :) xx

Awwww, thanks so much! <3 :) xx

Thanks so much! :) xx

I saw this, congratulations! But where did they get the numbers?

Apparently, from Amazon :) xx
How many do you have to sell to make such a list?

I don't know, but I'm guessing thousands :) xx

Thank you all so much! :) xx

That's fantastic! Congratulations. I bought Look Behind You from Amazon UK a while ago. I couldn't resist the fab cover. I didn't even realise you were a Kboards author :)
At first, I thought the Telegraph article listed British self-pub authors so I got a little confused when I saw Melody Anne and JS Scott.

Oh, how cool! Thanks so much, I hope you like it :) I think it meant Top 10 Self-Pubbers in Britain, not necessarily British :) xx

Would you say it's been a long, slow climb and Look Behind You was your breakout book? Or more of a steady ascent? BTW, how many books had you written before Look Behind You hit it big?

I'm full of questions today. Just so excited for you!

Oooh, I think it had been a long and steady climb. I've had books in the Top 50 in US before but not regularly for a long time without a Bookbub ad or something like that. I'd written 12 books before Look Behind You and was mostly know for my chick lit/rom com stuff, so this was really a new genre for me. The success it's had is quite amazing, really. It hit no 2 in Amazon UK within 6 weeks of release with virtually no advertising, and top spots in Australia and USA, so I really think it's possible for ANYONE to do the same. You just don't know which one of your books is going to take off like that so keep persevering! It's about to be relaunched by Thomas & Mercer next week so fingers crossed it will hit no 1! :) xx

Thanks so much, everyone!

(Interesting that this is, like the Smashwords best sellers, a very female-dominated list).

Yes! I didn't notice that. Interesting.

Huge honor - congrats!

It is indeed a mamooosive honour! :) xx

Woot woot!  :D That is phenomenal, Sibel! You've worked hard and deserve the recognition.

God, yeah, it's been really hard work for the last 4 years since Amazon first open up KDP to Non US Authors. I've learned so much from some amazing people, and although it's been blood, sweat, tears, headaches, hours and hours in front of the laptop, etc, I never dreamed I'd be lucky enough to be where I am at the moment in my writing journey. <3 :) xx

I think the kids have all been watching too many Nicki Minaj music videos...  ::)

Ha ha! It made me laugh, but, yes, you wouldn't want that on a children's book. I've reported and voted down. Unfortunately, Amazon don't often remove reviews. Wishing you luck with it. :) xx

Thanks so much all! I'm in amazing company on the list. Very excited! :) xx

Wow, just found out I'm listed in the today as one of "Britain's top 10 self-published authors of 2014".  I'm no 4 - Yippppppeeeeeeeeee!

Super congrats to everyone included in the list, it's amazing! And a huge thank you to all the readers for making it possible. Think I need a drink now! :) xx

So sorry to hear this. I didn't know Rhonda, but my thoughts go out to the family and friends :( xx

Wishing you lots of peace & happiness, Deborah. Sometimes our life journey takes us on a different path in our writing journey - somewhere totally unexpected. Everything is an opportunity to grow, to change, to find happiness somewhere we didn't expect.
Hugs :) xx

Writers' Cafe / Re: Let's talk Audio books
« on: August 14, 2014, 03:58:15 AM »
The narrator adds it automatically, but I assume he is using an ACX script or guidelines. On my dash there is a place to enter this info, and I think my narrators use the numbers he finds there.

Fabulous, Mark, thanks so much :) xx

I have a quick question re the copyright announcement on the audiobook. Do you add it in yourself, something like: "Book Title by Sibel Hodge. Read by Blah Blah. Copyright 2014, by Sibel Hodge."  Or does the narrator automatically add that bit in?

Thanks so much :) xx

Writers' Cafe / Re: Let's talk Audio books

Awesome! And a note: the narrator who did Susan Elizabeth Phillips' books up until the latest three or so, Anna Fields, was one of the best ever. Tragically, she was killed a few years ago. But check her out.

And I know what you mean about speed. Claire whips right along. :)

Sorry to hear about your eyes.

Rosalind, who is your narrator? I'm just getting into the audio now they've opened up to non US authors. I have a romantic comedy/chick lit that I need a narrator for, but I've found a lot of the Brit accents to be so fake sounding and slow! :) xx

Writers' Cafe / Re: New W-8BEN form doesn't allow EIN?
« on: August 01, 2014, 06:15:19 AM »
It says this: "Entities also may use the Form W-8BEN (revision date February 2006) through December 31, 2014." Still got 4 months. Submit the old form before Amazon and the rest realise things are changing. Worse case scenario, the form will be rejected in a week or two.

Yes, that's the W8BEN-E. I filled in the W8BEN, which is just one page and simpler than the old version. I know some people think you need the -E version because the W8BEN doesn't mention an EIN, but the KDP help pages seem to think an EIN is fine, so that's what I put. (

Fabulous, thanks! Let's hope they'll accept the old W8BEN after 2014, too, as the new one might as well be in Martian! :) xx
