Again, "Not as bad as Author Solutions." Damning it with faint praise indeed.

Taking a bunch of money up front is a no-no in my book (pun intended). Promising the author better than a 50-50 split, oddly enough, makes me wonder about their investment in the process. Real publishers pay advances up front and take it out of the back end by giving the author no more than 25-50% of net. This seems like a perversely bad deal until you realize it gives them an incentive to work to promote a book to get their advance back at least.

Of course, I wouldn't take either deal without at a hefty advance.
