Writers' Cafe / Re: Has anyone Beyonced a book? How did it go?
« on: Yesterday at 08:31:46 AM »
I kind of did that with the Kindle Worlds novella that I got my rights back to. I revised it to beef up each chapter, then wrote it to fit into an existing series. I republished it, then announced it once it went live. It did well, but I also originally priced it at 99c so that people who already read the original could get the new version at a reasonable price.

2,429 and the book is finished! Now to work on it and take some time off from first-drafting. I really need the break after a busy and stressful first half of the year. (HOW is it June already??)

3,296 to kick off the new month.

I admit to getting hung up on a headline that reads "a couple new issues" when it should read "a couple of new issues".

My editor says "couple of" is going out of fashion, for lack of a better word.

The "whole family" aspect is a good point. I've had a number of people tell me they've passed on my sweet/clean romances (not pictured in my signature) to their daughters or granddaughters, as young as twelve or thirteen.

Clean, Sweet, Inspy/Christian romance tends to get muddled, and it seems that everyone has their own idea of what fits where.

Some people have very sexy sweet romance because they view sweet as in the overall tone. Others expect a clean read when they pick up a sweet romance. Anything beyond kissing (including descriptions of deep kissing) will earn negative reviews for a book claiming to be clean. I have one clean romance where a reviewer complains about the hero grabbing a beer after a particularly stressful day.

Overall, if you claim "clean" and you have a good read with a focus on the emotions of the romance you should be fine. Just be aware that you'll probably receive some pushback no matter what you do! Can't please everyone - just like every other genre out there.

3,066 for today. The writing should start to get faster after this. I'm in the final quarter of a thriller and everything is about to come together in the worst (best) way possible.

Writers' Cafe / Re: How many books have you published so far?
« on: May 28, 2018, 10:45:32 AM »
I published my first book in late Nov 2012, went full-time in Feb 2015, and have 40+ books published. You kind of lose track after a while, and it gets confusing with box sets and whatnot. I'm happy with my income, though it is lower than last year. Much better than not being able to afford the toothbrush my son wanted before I started writing.

I'm opposed to it as an author, so I've been completely wide for almost two years now. (Except for two Kindle Worlds stories which were in KU for a short time, but I had no control over that.)

That said, I've had a KU subscription for some time. I was hesitant to join, but finally caved when Amazon offered a really good deal on a trial period. I've been in since because I do like it as a reader. I prefer to buy from indies and KU allows me to try more books I normally wouldn't. Like others have mentioned, I can drop a book without guilt. Just yesterday, I tried a book by one of my favorite authors. I did NOT like the book. (It was different from the other stuff of hers I've read, and I decided to give it a try anyway.) I gave it three chapters, then found another book to borrow and read.

For the poll, I voted have it and am thinking of canceling it. Every month I consider dropping, but so far I have plenty to read. I always find books to borrow. But I'm also one of those people who still buys plenty of books despite having KU.

1,863 today. A great bonus day. Definitely needed after missing so many writing sessions the last few weeks. Puts me closer to my original finish date.

The quote below is why I left KU in the summer of 2016 and have not returned. I've been tempted a time or two to try it again but in the end, that is why I haven't.

I have one friend who quit writing because Amazon terminated her account and took away her earnings last year, all for nefarious things she did not do. I keep hearing similar stories, and I have no desire live with that kind of stress. My family depends on my book sales, so I can't take that kind of risk. Even with being wide, I get the occasional threat to take down a book - usually one that's in a multi-author set.

I don't like the idea that at any given moment my account could be threatened over activities in which I do not take part nor do I have any control over. For that reason alone I'm out at the end of my 90 days, and I'm staying out.
