Writers' Cafe / Re: Unconventional epic fantasy - destined to fail?
« on: December 01, 2017, 08:10:51 AM »
I love me a tragic arc. Who didn't think Lucifer was the best character in Paradise Lost? Who didn't find some odd sort of satisfaction when Anakin became Vader (debatable quality or value of the SW prequel films otherwise notwithstanding)? I've been ruminating on a sort of YA series with heavy nods to Harry Potter, but where the chosen one basically owns his awesome power and embraces the evil within himself, killing the "Voldemort" nemesis but then taking his place as the ultimate "Dark Lord." Mmmmmm... tasty.

All this is to say, I think there is a certain type of reader who might find it very interesting, if you market to them correctly and if you write it well. But it might not be quite the same as your middle-of-the-road reader. As I read HP the first time, part of me genuinely wanted Harry to become the next great dark wizard. What are ya gonna do? Lol.

I don't have any epic fantasy blurb wisdom, but wanted to comment to say OH MY GOODNESS Aderyn, I am so excited to read this book!!!

Everyone, get excited! The Raven is SO good. Looking forward to this epic monster :D

Writers' Cafe / Re: Scrivener for iOS: anyone have experiences to share?
« on: November 27, 2017, 01:42:03 PM »
Thanks Patty and Rickie! Pretty good vibes there.

Follow-up: does it have a functional compiling feature? I mean, in theory, could someone do the whole process--writing, compiling, publishing (depending on vendor/distr.)--from an iPhone?

Anma, good point about free pricing in the App Store being out of their hands a bit. I think I just needed to rant to the room on that one  :P Thanks for all the details! It's pretty cool that you've done your nanowrimo on a tablet, I have to say. What a world...

Writers' Cafe / Scrivener for iOS: anyone have experiences to share?
« on: November 27, 2017, 01:24:35 PM »
Hey 'dere Cyber folk,

I just noticed that Scrivener does indeed now have a mobile version (iOS). See here:
https://www.literatureandlatte.com/store/scrivener?tab=iOS

Has anyone used it? Have any experiences to share? I want to try it. It's cheap for what the desktop version can do, sure, but I'm still a bit annoyed that there seems to be no free trial option. This is exactly the sort of situation in which a trial would help me decide whether or not to buy, as I have no experience using software like this on my iPhone. *shrug* Any rave testimonials, insightful criticisms, or anything in between is welcome.

I ran a google kboards search and this old thread was the only other place I saw it mentioned:
http://www.kboards.com/index.php?topic=229257.0

Thanks, all!

Excellent. Make it a first-class plane ticket when you're ready to throw money at me to attend your cool conference. ;)

QUACKQUACKQUACKQUACKQUAKKITYQUACK!

Commenting here to bump the thread. A month after it all began, I've achieved the goal I set out for myself: move from a low two-figure to a three-figure monthly income. To read about how it happened, go back to the top of the thread. OP has been updated with lots of information (and pictures--oo, shiny!).

Thanks!

ALRIGHT PEOPLE, LET'S DO THIS:

IN RECENT WEEKS WE'VE LEARNED THAT INDIA WANTS TO BUY ALL YOUR BOOKS, RANK IS RANK (HAHA VERY CLEVER BEN), EVERYONE YOU KNOW IN HOLLYWOOD OR WASHINGTON IS A TERRIBLE EXCUSE FOR A HUMAN BEING, AND IF A CAPS-LOCK WEDNESDAY THREAD FALLS IN THE FOREST AND NO ONE IS LISTENING, NO ONE MAKES THEIR .00455 PER PAGE READ.

IF YOU WERE SURPRISED BY MORE THAN ONE OF THOSE, YOU'RE AN ODD DUCK.

(AND IF YOU'RE AN ODD DUCK THERE'S A 50/50 CHANCE YOU'RE ACTUALLY A GOOSE. GIVE IT A MINUTE. YOU'LL GET THERE.)

TODAY I'M JUMPING IN AND TAKING THE REINS FOR A WEEK TO ASK US ALL ANOTHER QUESTION ABOUT EXOTIC LOCATIONS. IF YOU HAD UNLIMITED FUNDS AND NO EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES THAT TIED YOU DOWN TO THE PART OF THE WORLD WHERE YOU CURRENTLY RESIDE, WHERE WOULD YOU GO LIVE (AND WRITE?). CURIOUS MINDS WANT TO KNOW. WELL, MAYBE DAYDREAMING MINDS THAT SHOULD BE WRITING BUT ARE CURRENTLY DAYDREAMING INSTEAD.

WELL ME AS FOR ME, I'M ALWAYS A LITTLE TORN BETWEEN THE CLASSIC LITTLE BEACH SOMEWHERE IN THE CARIBBEAN, AND A REMOTE (BUT AWESOME) CABIN SOMEWHERE IN THE NORTH WOODS. THE KIND OF PLACE YOU CAN JUST HOLE UP IN FOR DAYS (WEEKS?) AT A TIME--GRAB YOUR SUPPLIES FROM SOME NEARBY TOWN AND THEN JUST DISAPPEAR FROM CIVILIZATION FOR A LITTLE WHILE. MMMMMM YEAH.

WHAT ABOUT YOU, SHEEPLES?

FOLLOW UP QUESTION (THANK YOU NETFLIX). JIM CARREY: GREAT CANADIAN, OR THE GREATEST CANADIAN? BONUS POINTS FOR ANSWERS FROM REAL LIVE CANADIANS.

IM HERE WE CAN DO THE NEWS NOW

KBOARDS ALSO PROVED THAT BLURBS SHOULD BE SHORTS, EVEN IF IT'S COLD IN YOUR PART OF THE WORLD, AND TO THE POINT, WHICH LEADS TO THE QUESTION OF HOW COLD IS IT ANYWAY? THE SECRET SAUCE OF WRITING IS SWEET BUTTER ON TOP OF A GOOD STORY, WHICH MIGHT ONLY HAPPEN IF YOU THROW OUT YOUR PANTS (LOOK, WE'RE BACK IN SHORTS AGAIN?!? IT'S STILL TOO COLD SOME PLACES FOR THAT!).

I DESIRE PANCAKES. SHORT BLURBSTACK DRIZZLED IN BUTTER. RIGHT MEOW.

Writers' Cafe / Re: KDP down, or just me?
« on: November 07, 2017, 02:10:58 PM »
Nevermind, problem solved! Err, problem stopped, anyway. I'm still not sure what was causing the holdup/error, but just seconds after posting this thread I tried again and it worked. Apparently the solution was just taking up a little space on the KBoards servers. Or maybe playing "Five Little Ducks" in another tab for my son while he runs around with his blocks. Not sure--who can know the mind of the intertube gods?

Anyway, false scare. KDP is NOT down. Not for me, anyway.

Writers' Cafe / KDP down, or just me?
« on: November 07, 2017, 02:00:52 PM »
Hi All!

Have been trying to publish a story on KDP for about an hour... I get to the last page and click the final "Publish" button, and get a message saying there was an unexpected error loading the page, I should try again later. Have tried a few times, no dice.

Just wondering if anyone else is hitting the same wall or not. I've tried a couple of browsers, but just one laptop. Meh.

Good luck to us all! Lol

My apologies if this has already been discussed today--a cursory scan hasn't turned up any hits.

EDITED to clarify: I'm able to save my progress as a draft, and I'm able to access reports. Just can't quite finish the job on the publishing end.

Covers are beautiful. Writing seems solid from the first paragraph or so. Have you started a mailing list? I'm happy to do a feature swap with you mid-November or sometime in December to get you in front of my readers. Sharing on Twitter now. Good luck! Keep writing! #ClassOf2017

Day 4 final count: 126 giveaways, 5 sales, just 62 KENP.

Day 5 (today:

48 giveaways
1,543 Free in Kindle store
8 in space marine subcat
10 in space fleet subcat
13 in space opera

Back to full price tonight! I'll pop back in a week or two with a recap and post-promo numbers. Thanks everyone!

19
Day 3 (yesterday) final numbers, as of this morning: 198 giveaways of Book 1; 5 sales between Books 2 and 3; 116 KENP.

I woke up this morning to find that I had taken the #1 spot in all three of my subcategories on the free list (Space Fleet, Space Marine, Space Opera). It didn't stick very long in Space Opera, but it was a really delicious feeling. Feels amazing to go to the list and see your book next to books by your heroes, too, and even pushing past them at times. What a rush!

Day 4 (today), again as of about 10pm US CT:

115 giveaways
#787 Free in Kindle Store
#3 in Kindle ebooks > SFF > SF > Military > Space Fleet
#3 in Kindle ebooks > SFF > SF > Military > Space Marine
#6 in Kindle ebooks > SFF > SF > Space Opera
5 copies sold (Book 2 and Book 3)
62 KENP

I had 0 KENP for most of the day, and I saw some other folks complaining about the same issue. Not sure if I really had no reads all morning or if I was a casualty of a system hiccup. Oh well! Taking what I can get. Rank is slipping, so I think I've probably peaked and am heading into the tail now. That's ok, because tomorrow is the last free day. Then we see if I can capitalize on the momentum with a FB ad on the book at $2.99!

See you all tomorrow, beautiful people.

I'M NOT CLEANING UP THE LAUNDRY AFTERWARDS, THOUGH. YOU'RE ADULTS AND THAT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

WAIT I MISSED SOMETHING WHY IS LAUNDRY BEING DONE? I'VE GOT SOME OK

NO PROBLEM. I'D PREFER TO SKIP SEEING KBOARDS TURN TO CANNIBALISM. :)

GOOD THROWBACK.

AND THEN THERE ARE PEOPLE THINKING, IS THIS SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY?  I THOUGHT ALL-CAPS HUMP DAYS WERE ALL FUN AND FUNNY AND STUFF SO WHAT THE HECK IS THIS?

ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT NO MATTER WHAT IS WRITTEN HERE, IT MUST ALL BE YELLED ALOUD AT THE TOP OF ONE'S LUNGS WHILST BEING READ.

THAT HELPS WITH THE HUMORS.

HEHE. HUMORS.

Submitted! Whew, that was a close one. Love it!

24
Day 2 (yesterday) final numbers, as of today: 193 giveaways of Book 1; 6 sales of Book 2; 102 KENP.

Day 3 (today), as of 10pm US CT (a little later today than the last two days; have been teaching all night):

181 giveaways
#738 Free in Kindle Store
#1 in Kindle ebooks > SFF > SF > Military > Space Fleet
#1 in Kindle ebooks > SFF > SF > Military > Space Marine
#4 in Kindle ebooks > SFF > SF > Space Opera
5 copies sold (Book 2 and Book 3)
116 KENP

I HIT #1! TWICE! Ok, ok, so I know it's in a couple of niche subcategories, and I know it's a LOT easier on the free lists than the paid lists, buuuuut stiiiiiill... guys, guys. Who's number 1?

 ;D

Thanks again to my ML shares! Here's to another good couple of days of the free promo, mostly tail, then onward!

DRINKS!

Writers' Cafe / KDP Accounts Q: 2 accounts, 1 bank account: ok?
« on: October 31, 2017, 11:59:37 AM »
Hi all!

I've a quandary for the KDP experts in the room. My wife would like to publish, and she'd like to have her own KDP account, but the payouts will go to the same bank account / bank routing number as mine. Does anyone know if that's going to cause any trouble for us? Anyone have any experience, anecdotal evidence, or a better understanding of the TOS than I who wants to chime in, opinions/insights welcome. I don't want to be perceived by KDP as running afoul of the system, especially when they're out on the hunt for scammers and the like.

If this has been asked before, feel free to merge. I did some searching and found similar Q's, but not quite this one.

Thanks!
