I'm selling my cover for my old Kindle Keyboard (it no longer works and I've replaced it with a Paperwhite). It's in good condition and has developed a lovely patina. I requested this version not have the felt inside the cover when I bought it from Oberon, which you can see in the below photos. I also attached the charm it came with to the closure elastic. If you're interested, I am accepting offers.

Archives / For Sale: Oberon Celtic Hounds cover for K3
« on: October 25, 2014, 01:34:52 PM »
I'm getting a new Kindle and selling my cover that I've used for years on my old K3. It's the wine colored version of the Oberon Design Celtic Hounds cover. It's in good condition and comes with the charm that it was originally shipped with. There is some light wear, but nothing out of the ordinary for a well-loved and well-used piece of leather. It has a lovely patina. :D

Also, it does not have the felt on the inside of the cover- it is solid leather there.

I would like $40 for it, but the price is negotiable.

Not Quite Kindle / North Carolinians visiting Concord Mills

Are any of you going to the Great Wolf Lodge this Christmas? My dad is the Santa Claus there. ^_^
Also, I work in Concord Mills too. :D

Let's Talk Kindle! / Kindle 5
« on: November 14, 2011, 11:13:59 PM »
So now that we've seen Amazon's latest offerings, I'm looking ahead to the 5th generation. To be honest, I wasn't thrilled with the newest Kindles. I despise the placement of the page turn buttons on the non-touch version, and I can't stand that they left off page turn buttons on the touch version. I have an iPad and I dislike swiping for page turns and I accidentally turn pages all the time when I read on it. I'd much rather have buttons on the side like the K3 for turning. Also, I feel like the aesthetic design of the new Kindles looks... cheap. The Nook Simple Touch is much prettier to look at, to be honest. And then perhaps the most egregious sin, in my book, is limiting the free 3G to only wikipedia and the Amazon store. I enjoy having 3G on my Kindle to check email, blogs, and to have in case of emergencies (as I can't afford internet on my phone). With all these things in mind, here's what I would like to see in the K5:

- Touchscreen
- Page turn buttons on the sides of the device
- 3G internet without limits, or at least granting access to email- an email Kindle active content perhaps? Sort of like an app?
- Better industrial design- black and/or white instead of the plasticky cheap-looking silver. Maybe rubberizing it a little bit?

Let's Talk Kindle! / Black Friday deals?
« on: November 10, 2011, 09:21:58 AM »
So it's looking like (http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/08/kindle-family-goes-retail-coming-to-a-store-near-you-on-novembe/) the new Kindles will be in stores next week and I'm seriously considering trading in my first gen iPad and getting a Kindle Fire.

That leaves the question- will there be any awesome Black Friday deals? Anyone heard any rumors? Supposition? Past precedent?

Archives / Possibly for sale: Oberon cover for first gen iPad
« on: November 10, 2011, 08:01:22 AM »
I'm currently debating selling my first gen iPad in favor of buying a Kindle Fire. I have a beautiful Tree of Life in saddle Oberon cover for it in excellent condition. I'm curious to see if there would be anyone interested in buying it if I chose to sell.

Kindle Accessories / Does anyone have the Oberon Van Gogh Sky in Wine?
« on: November 07, 2011, 07:30:29 PM »
I've been searching through the Oberon thread and I haven't seen any pictures of this particular design and color combo. I'm thinking of asking for a new Oberon for Christmas and I'd like to see some "real world" pictures of it first. Thanks!

So I recently found this article listing out a bunch of secret features built into the Kindle:

http://www.ponnuki.net/2011/05/kindle-3-hack/

These features are pretty cool. Note- whenever it gives you a sequence of keys to press, make sure you hold them all down together, like ctrl-alt-delete on your computer. I love that I have mindsweeper and a connect four type game built into the device.

Not Quite Kindle / Advice needed regarding a nerdy boy- UPDATE 2
« on: March 02, 2011, 12:53:42 AM »
I happen to be somewhat infatuated with a nerdy boy and am in need of some help. Though articulate and pleasant, I think he's a little shy regarding romantic entanglements and I'm wondering if I should I just ask him out, or do you think he'll do it himself if I send strong enough signals? (We're both in college btw.)

I've never asked a guy out before, so I figured I could turn to those here older and wiser than myself for some advice. Please and thank you!

I updated this morning for the page numbers- I have a number of textbooks that it would be fantastic to have page numbers for (never mind that the page numbers never showed up after I updated)- and what to my wondering eyes should appear, but my Kindle was still jailbroken! Yay! How about y'all?

Kindle Accessories / TinderBloom covers- anybody have one?
« on: February 21, 2011, 05:06:47 PM »
Does anyone have a Kindle case made by TinderBloom on etsy? I'm maybe thinking of getting one to replace my Kate Spade cover that caused rebooting. They're very pretty. I'm thinking of this case:

But with they design from this sleeve (the maker says they can put another bookplate design on the cover):

Let's Talk Kindle! / Kindle as a Gift
« on: February 18, 2011, 05:12:30 PM »
So my mom and I just bought my grandma a Kindle as a birthday present. We're hoping that she'll like it- she loves to read, but is having trouble seeing now, so the font-adjustment feature is perfect for her (plus, we got her the cover with the built-in light). Also, the romance novels that she loves are significantly cheaper in their ebook form than in their DTB form, so it will save her money. So in theory, she should like it, but she could potentially hate it in a fit of senior citizen technophobia.

Have you ever given (or received) a Kindle as a gift and got (or gave) an unexpected reaction?

Let's Talk Kindle! / A fantastic idea- Starbucks + Amazon!
« on: February 17, 2011, 03:54:42 AM »
I was reading one of my favorite news blogs and I came acros a post about the whole Borders fiasco. When I was reading the comments, a brilliant idea came to mind. Here's a direct link to the article/comment thread: http://jezebel.com/#!5762733/does-borders-bankruptcy-mean-the-end-of-bookstores?comment=37081126:37081126

But if you don't feel like going there, here's the comment I saw:
Quote
Big warehouses of books are definitely doomed. I think the future is in-store browsing on portable devices, with restaurant and beverage services providing most of the revenue. Fulfillment through next day home delivery, instant download and instant printing for the impatient technophobes. I could really see Starbucks or Panera breaking into this market and cleaning the clock of the last remaining brick and mortars.

And here's my response:

That would be awesome. They could even do promos every now and then such as giving away a free book (or a specific book) with every drink purchase using a code on the cup, or do the Barnes and Noble thing of letting you read a book for free for an hour or two. I rarely go to coffee shops (I don't drink coffee) and I rarely go to book stores (I have a Kindle) anymore, but I would totally start going to Starbucks A LOT more if they did something like that. Maybe Starbucks could team up with Amazon? It would be a really profitable partnership for both companies, I'm sure.

Doesn't that sound really cool? It would certainly take the concept of digital cafes to a whole other level. I would love to go to a digital book cafe!

Writers' Cafe / Cover opinions!
« on: February 10, 2011, 01:31:58 AM »
So after browsing through the Library of Congress's vast archive of public domain images, I finally found one appropriate for the cover of the paranormal Victorian high-seas adventure/romance that I'm working on right now.

Opinions? Would this get your attention? My audience would be sort of young-adultish and I'm kind of torn between something like this and something more modern. I just couldn't pass up trying something with this image, though, as it was drawn during the appropriate time period in the appropriate place, and the young man at the bottom fits the description of the main character pretty well. Fate, no?

Apple devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod...) / iPad vs. Kindle: No Contest

I have a new blog entry comparing the two devices, which should help anyone on the fence about whether or not they want an iPad or a Kindle or both.

Does the Kindle support Japanese characters without a hack? I'd like to name my Kindle Tenzu-chan (from the verb tenzuru, which means "to kindle"  ;D) and display its name (点ずちゃん!) in the appropriate kanji/hiragana (Chinese/Japanese characters).

Archives / WTB Red Wild Roses Oberon Cover for K3
« on: January 30, 2011, 07:18:16 PM »
So my grandmother's birthday is coming up and my mom and I are planning on getting her a Kindle (she reads all the time, but has so much trouble reading the small print of the cheap paperbacks that she loves). She loves leather, red, and roses, so of course I thought that the Red Wild Roses Oberon cover would be PERFECT for her. Does anyone have one that they're looking to sell? I figured it would be worth it to check here first before buying full price (being in college sucks for your wallet).

Kindle Accessories / I have no self-control... -.-U
« on: January 29, 2011, 09:44:17 PM »
I did it and I'm a pathetic excuse for a human being. I haven't even gotten my new Kindle in the mail yet, and I've already purchased not one, but two pricey covers for it. The problem is that I love Oberon covers and I'm a huge theatre nerd. I already have an Oberon Tree of Life cover for my iPad and I desperately wanted one for my new Kindle. But those Kate Spade book covers... It's been a slippery slope even since I first laid eyes on this beauty several weeks ago (after I had already resolved that I needed an Oberon cover):

The Importance of Being Earnest is perhaps my all-time favorite play and this cover heavily utilizes my two most favorite colors, purple and red. I had heard some people were having issues with these covers, buti had also heard that others loved their cover and had no problems whatsoever. And then the price dropped. And then I observed that my Oberon would not be ready by the time I got my Kindle (leaving my new toy naked). And then I realized that the Kate Spade Book-of-the-Month clutch that it was based on was $325, which I could never justify spending on a clutch.

That was it. I was gone. If I hadn't bought the 3G version of the Kindle, I would have already spent more on accessories than on the thing itself.

This Kindle thing is going to steal all my money, isn't it?

Archives / WTB: Kate Spade The Importance of Being Earnest Cover
« on: January 29, 2011, 07:58:19 PM »
Even though I've heard mixed reviews of the KS covers, The Importance of Being Earnest is one of my most favorite plays ever. I figured that if I could get one used for a good price, it'd be worth the gamble. Any sellers?

I love "Ex Libris" ("From the Library of") bookplates.  ;D

Writers' Cafe / New technology blog for women!
« on: December 23, 2010, 12:20:34 AM »
I read a lot of blogs, primarily tech blogs, such as Gizmodo and Engadget. Something that I've noticed, though, is that only occasionally is the female point-of-view presented. I used to blog quite a bit and have fallen out of the habit, but I recently decided to start a blog that covers popular technology and geeky stuff from a woman's perspective, as well as covering tech/geekiness/etc. that women care about.

Thus I present to you FemmeNerd. Please read and enjoy.
