Writers' Cafe / Box set massive launch / Update: release week is here!
« on: October 08, 2016, 06:26:27 AM »
First of all, this is going to be one long post. You have been warned  :P

Since the third full-length book in the Black Werewolves series is coming out in January, I decided to bundle up the first two books and the novella (which take places after book 2 and before book 3) in an attempt to reach more readers.

This is the box set: https://gajajkos.com/2016/08/20/black-werewolves-box-set-99c-special/

I put it up for pre-order at the end of August and will release it at $0.99, then raise the price to $5.99.

Pre-order period

Lineup:

- Main advertising: FB and BookBub ads, Rebecca's Spotlight (Genre Crave), Book Fish Goddess Book Tour (Blurb only) and some cross-promo + a few other promo sites
- the ads carry the main weight since I run them every day (I used FB in the beginning when I didn't have access to BB. The latter works much better for me, and I would have saved a whole lot of money if I didn't get such late access. But oh well. As long as I have them now, I'm not truly complaining.)
- I'm also giving both Drowned novellas for free to anybody who sends in their pre-order confirmation

How things are going:

- I currently (October 8th) have over 1000 pre-orders on Amazon
- I still don't have the latest numbers for other stores since I go through D2D, but I managed to get just over a hundred on B&N in September
- Update 1 (October 16th): currently have about 1600 pre-orders across vendors (1300+ on Amazon, 200+ on B&N)
- Update 2 (October 27th): over 2000 pre-orders across vendors  :o (1700+ Amazon; 350+ B&N)

Release week

These are the promos I have lined up so far. If you have any suggestions for additional sites, I'd be happy to read and consider them.

(Needless to say, I didn't get a BookBub, and a few big hitters are impossible for me to get since I don't have enough reviews.)

For the duration of the week I also have a tour scheduled with Book Nymph PR.

The primary goal for this is visibility/readers. Hitting a list would, of course, be amazing, but without a BookBub that's more a far-fetched dream than anything else...

If any of you are willing to do a NL swap or maybe share the box set on your twitter/FB, that would be greatly appreciated :-*

Anyway, I'll keep you posted how things go :)

Enter the world where myth becomes reality, where long forgotten gods walk the earth, and where love forms bonds that cannot be broken even in the raging winds of battle.

**
The Dark Ones (Black Werewolves, Book 1)

In a world ruled by lethal Slavic immortals, Rose and her pack of Black werewolves are drawn into the beginning of a war as they try to uncover the being behind the mass murder of White werewolves.

Because the nature of the killings obstructs the normal passage of souls, Veles, the sultry lord of the underworld, offers Rose his assistance; the were is left facing not only the new knowledge of the pack’s hidden lineage but also her growing fondness for the arrogant god…

To win the war, the pack must ascend to The Dark Ones. But to do so, they must be willing to risk being on the receiving end of the immortal community’s wrath.

**

The 24hourlies (Black Werewolves, Book 2)

The ascension to The Dark Ones had brought Rose and her pack power. But it had also brought peril.

With the higher immortal circles observing their every move, the only way the pack can prevent from becoming the recipients of their resentment is to keep their presence profitable for the wider community.

When someone begins targeting the twentyfourhourlies, the civil and agreeable vampiric individuals, the werewolves come to their aid.

But what had first seemed like an assignment done to remain in the leaders’ good graces, now becomes a mission for which the pack is willing to risk its safety and anonymity in exchange for the possibility of catching the responsible party.

**

Chased (Black Werewolves, Book 2.5)

Katja is more than ready to meet Jürgen’s family. But she feels the need to share the shadows of her past first.

As they travel to Munich, Katja has to fight her fears and open up to the werewolf if she wishes to truly, wholly share her life with someone.

But her visit with the Freundenbergers brings more than just a heart-to-heart as the vampire finds herself in a situation that seems frightfully like an echo of her own nightmares.

Writers' Cafe / Promoting box set pre-orders?
« on: August 06, 2016, 01:38:30 AM »
I've been digging around old posts, and every single one of those pertaining to the question of promoting a pre-order was for a single book. Of course, the points made were valid (pre-orders don't get a Look Inside etc); but how about promoting pre-orders of box sets that consist of already published titles, titles a ready has a chance to look at beforehand?

I'm still sort of a mess about planning these things, so I apologize in advance for any possible ramblings  ;D

Right, so let's say I wanted to widen my reader base.

I'm thinking of putting together a box set of Book 1, Book 2, and Book 2.5 (which is a novella). The reason behind this is that as I'm now halfway through writing Book 3, I've realized that the first two titles and the novella work great as an entry point together for what will follow in the series. They're the “build-up” part of the storyline before the sh*t hits the fan and major events begin to unfold.

So bundling the first three titles together seems like a wise choice to make, say if somebody wanted to save a few $ and get through the first “arc” of the story all at once, and to maybe get some more traction for the next book once it'll be released.

This is a little hard to get across, but I hope I'm being clear enough (it's still fairly early in the morning here, and with me just getting home from walking my dogs, my mind isn't its usual self just yet. I'm getting that coffee soon, I swear).  ::)

Okay. So I plan to release the box set after the novella, but before Book 3 (to be specific, while Book 3 is available for pre-order). However, I'd still like to put the box set up for pre-order as well (perhaps even a few weeks before the novella is officially released), to gain some traction.

I'd price the pre-order as a bargain, keep it that way for the first week after release, then raise it to its regular price.

And now, the most important question (with a minor intro):

I've seen a whole lot of box sets gain traction while in pre-order phase. Do you promote them? Do promo sites even accept books that are on pre-order?

I know I could do FB ads, I could reach out to my mailing list (though the majority of them already own the books, and the mailing list itself is really not as massive as some of the authors on here have)... But is there anything else?

My main agenda here isn't making $. It's visibility.

Any comments, suggestions, whateversthatyourheartdesires will be greatly appreciated  :D

I noticed something wonky has been happening with the series and series volume metadata. Does anybody else have a problem with those two appearing on the product page? I've contacted Amazon and they offered a solution, but it's... Odd, to say the least. I'll write about it later on, but first some basic info.

(sorry, this is going to be a long post)

Everything was fine with my first title in the series.

I have the metadata set as:
Book title: The Dark Ones
Subtitle: (empty)
Series title: Black Werewolves    Volume: 1

It shows up correctly on Amazon as: The Dark Ones (Black Werewolves Book 1)

Now for my second book in the series, I have the metadata set as:
Book title: The 24hourlies
Subtitle: (empty)
Series title: Black Werewolves    Volume: 2

And on Amazon, it only says: The 24hourlies (Black Werewolves).

I contacted Amazon about this problem, and the representative said the issue is that:
“Your titles are set as individuals, and subtitle is set as a series, and it should be the other way around. Main Title need to be share, thus for your books will be "Black Werewolves" and subtitles is the one that will change accordingly.  Thus, for yours the subtitles will be "The 24hourlies" and "The dark ones".”

This instruction is then followed by the main requirements to set up a series (the same ones that are on KDP - and the same ones I stuck with while filling out the metadata).

First of all, what worries me is the mention of a subtitle - I don't have one. I wrote back, asking about why a subtitle is showing up in their systems when I don't have one filled out in the metadata. I presume it's some odd glitch, but I won't know until I hear back from Amazon.

Secondly, their solution is contrary to the general guidelines for setting up a series. If I understand correctly, according to the representative's tip (I also wrote back about this), my metadata should look like:
Book title: Black Werewolves
Subtitle: The 24hourlies
Series title: Black Werewolves (?)   Volume: 2

Do you see my dilemma? This is very, very much different from what's written in the KDP guidelines: https://kdp.amazon.com/help?topicId=A1I2EYS7T8GCYK.

And while I'm waiting for the representative to write back, I noticed another odd thing.

My second series, Drowned... isn't showing up at all.

The metadata for both books is:
Book title: Drowned in Demand
Subtitle: (empty)
Series title: Drowned   Volume 1
&
Book title: Drowned in Avidity
Subtitle: (empty)
Series title: Drowned   Volume 2

But on Amazon, the books merely show up as Drowned in Demand and Drowned in Avidity. Could it be a problem that the word “Drowned” appears in the book title as well as the series title? Has anybody had this problem before?

All three books with issues concerning the metadata showing up on their product pages have been published April 2016 or later... The first one was in March (well, February 29th according to Amazon) and it turned out like it should.

So if it is some weird glitch, have any of you noticed any issues with titles published after March? Or is the problem related only to my titles?

Maybe the alternative way of filling out the metadata works, but I think I'll wait until I hear back from the representative before I start changing things in my dashboard.

Anyway, I'll keep you posted how this goes... Ah, well  ;)

The world of Slavic immortals has never been darker

Praise for The Dark Ones

"A Slovenian author writing about a Slovenian setting, the book has an authenticity not often present in this genre - a feeling as if this paranormal battle could actually be occurring. There is plenty of romantic tension here, but the characters have lives outside the romance, and very serious challenges they must face. When combined with the intricate and innovative setting, this is a strong entry into the werewolf genre." Self-Publishing Review

"If you enjoy the paranormal genre, this one will have you yearning for more." Hashtag Minxes
