Title: Beta Read-Proofread-Copy Edit-Substantive Edit-Package Deals-Booking Oct/Nov
Post by: A Fading Street on September 24, 2016, 11:45:39 PM
See the last few messages for details of BOTH package deals now on offer

Hi everybody I'm Graham and I want to introduce my new services for all you dedicated authors out there

***SPECIAL KBOARDS OFFER 20% OFF FOR ANY FIRST TIME PROJECT JUST MENTION KBOARDS IN A MESSAGE***

***FREE PROOFREAD OR COPY EDIT ON YOUR FIRST CHAPTER TO SEE HOW I WORK***

**NEW SERVICE NOW AVAILABLE-AUDIOBOOK PROOFING**

Beta Read

We provide a detailed broad strokes view written report as part of the Beta Read service.
Full details are on the site but essentially it will cover areas such as the effectiveness of the beginning of the book, character development, plot holes, pacing, dialogue, and whether the ending of the book is suitably satisfying.

From that report you should expect positive reactions to areas that the reader likes and feels works PLUS suggestions for areas that the reader feels doesn't. We want to encourage writers to produce a fantastic book. We are not in this to knock anyone's confidence :)

If you can afford an editor you should use one. If not, a Beta Read may go some way toward ironing out any major problems.

RATES- We currently charge $0.00075 per word so a 50000 word manuscript would therefore cost $37.50

Proofreading

We will comb your manuscript for spelling mistakes, missing words, incorrect words, punctuation errors, and any inconsistencies in plot or character that stand out.

Rates-for a comprehensive, objective Proofread including the return of your manuscript in MS Word with Track Changes.

We currently charge $0.0015 per word with a minimum of $10.
A 50000 word MS would therefore cost $75 for detailed proofreading plus any other inconsistencies that happen to come out as part of the exercise.

Copy Editing

Everything included in our Proofreading service plus
We then check for
Grammar errors.
Inconsistency within the text will be highlighted and corrected eg ensuring that e-mail on one page doesn't become email fifty pages later or a blond head of hair in Chapter 2 isn't brown in Chapter 15.
Continuity in characters and settings.
Repetition of words or blocks of information.
Ensuring that the manuscript is technically as good as it can be.

Our rate for Copy Editing is $0.0035 per word so a 50000 word manuscript would cost $175 subject to a $25 minimum charge.

We will Beta, Proof and Copy Edit in any genre acceptable to Amazon including erotica but excluding technical non-fiction.
General non-fiction, autobiographies, self help, inspirational books would be fine.

Turnaround will be agreed at the time of order but for a standard 60k to 100k manuscript, you should expect to see it back within 7 days, often sooner.

We are happy to edit in both US English and British English.

Our Package Deal rate of $0.004 per word is still ongoing for a combined Beta Read/Copy Edit/Proofread package.

We are also now offering what we are calling Substantive Editing but in our case we also are offering, as part of a separate package deal to include the Copy-Editing and Proofreading stages as part of the process so not only will you get a chapter by chapter report on things like plotting/pacing/character development and the effectiveness of both narrative AND dialog sections, a complete breakdown of the main characters, their actions and interactions and where these could be improved. A breakdown of the descriptions used within the book and any suggestions for how they could be improved and of course praise for those parts that work well already :). No in-book editing at this stage although their will be comments left throughout to explain or add to what is mentioned in the report.
The report we produce will run to several pages and contain guidance for really making your story the best it can possibly be with the added benefit of having three editing passes-
Pass One-The Substantive Edit-A full written report highlighting all of those things already mentioned-
Pass Two, A copy edit as per above-
Pass Three A final Proofread to catch those last few mistakes.
All this at a rate of $0.01 per word so a 50000 word manuscript would cost $500 for the complete package.

For a Substantive Edit alone the rate would be $0.008

Buying the elements seperately would cost $0.013 oer word so the package deal represents great value.

In order to make best use of this service it is important that the manuscript is finished rather than in early draft form.

Just having noticed that the message doesn't seem to support a currency sign other than $ that the weird marks in the message should be GBP signs.

I know it's against the rules but I need to try and get Betsy to help us out here. I am trying to set up a Yellow Pages listing but whenever I try to update I just get an error message "Database update error" on screen. Am I doing something wrong?

Just want to say thank you to those who have been in touch and for their help and encouragement. In order to pay things forward a little, help build our business and help out the community we have time to do a completely free proofread for a shortish book, 40000 words or thereabouts or a Beta Read on a longer book up to 80000 words or thereabouts.
Books can be published or works in progress.
No strings attached although if the recipient feels able to leave a recommendation on our thread here or a testimonial for us to use on our site that would be great but obviously there is no compulsion for either.
We can't think of any fairer way to offer this than on a first come first served basis so if you are penniless and need some help, get claiming.
We have no way of judging this but we would ask that if you can afford to have your books proofread, please pay. I would like to have the free slot used by someone who couldn't afford this kind of thing in normal circumstances. Like we say we have no way to police that so we will leave it to your own consciences.
We do have paid slots available in the coming weeks so if the offer of a freebie is gone we will offer a half priced slot to anyone who can take advantage until we have a full schedule. We will, if it is OK with the other party, post a note once the free offer is taken up just to prove this isn't a marketing ploy of the sneakiest kind:)
PM us or post a reply if you are interested.
Any genre at all apart from non-fiction.

Just to say that the offer of free beta reads has been taken up pending arrival of manuscripts.

In the end we made room for two Beta's the first for VIDYA and the other for TiffanyNicole

Get those manuscripts in guys :)

Just had a manuscript beta read by A Fading Street and I couldn't be more pleased. All the questions I had were answered and then some. The feedback I received pinpointed what worked as well as what didn't and what could be improved on. I can now use this info to make my story better.

Fast friendly service, thorough feedback, fast turnaround time--I will definitely be back!

Thanks to TiffanyNicole for taking the time to leave this message. It is much appreciated. It's good that you found the feedback useful and constructive and good luck with the book when it sees the light of day :)

If anyone would like to take advantage  of the offer  we are currently discounting 50% off for all first time clients on either a Beta Read or Proofreading/Copy Editing.

A 100000 word MS would be $45 instead of $90 for a Beta Read with a full written report and a similar size MS for Proofreading would be $200 instead of $400. Take advantage while the going is good.

On a first come first served basis we have decided to offer one FREE Beta Read again this week so if it helps anybody out, fire in those messages :)

Many thanks to Graham and the folks at A Fading Street for their beta read of my book. Turnaround time was super quick and the report I got back was very thorough.

Graham made a lot of great suggestions and gave me hope that my first excursion into publishing my baby won't be a total train wreck (yeah, I've got the first time jitters). Thanks so much, Graham!

You are very very welcome and I'm glad that the suggestions we made are proving useful.

All the luck in the world with your first publication and may your sales be many and often :)

Incidentally if anybody out there in Author World is in need of proofreading or copy editing, I am trying to fill our schedules for November and December and have a few slots remaining.

Our offer of 50% off our rates for first time clients mentioning KBoards is about to expire at the end of this week so  if you need it doing, get it booked in.

Contact us via this thread or PM or email publishing@fadedstreet.com

If in doubt don't forget we offer a free proofread or copy edit of your first chapter so you can see how we work and whether we would work well together (we would, we are nice people).

Any genre in US or British English.

Just a quick update. The 50% discount offer finishes tonight at midnight in whatever time zone you are in and over the next few weeks I have three slots available to fill for proofreading and copy editing (unless someone wants a 1000 page epic editing) in which case it will be only one :). If possible I would like to get those filled with KBoards people, especially those who are short of funds. Hence the offer.

I am taking bookings now for December and January if you have something coming up around that time or if you need something at short notice, let me know I will always try to squeeze you in if I can.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating so don't forget, we will copy edit or proofread your first chapter entirely free so that you can get a feel for the way we work and see the kind of suggestions and changes we make.

Contact through this thread or by PM or at publishing@fadingstreet.com or check out the website or our Yellow Pages listing for more information.

Have a great Sunday all ... or whatever day it is wherever you are in the world when you read this.

Generally with lots of red marks on it in my experience Robb ;)
Seriously though, glad to be able to work with you on your project and if anyone is interested I still have a slot left for proofreading/copyediting this week and for the next couple of weeks If you get in quick I might be tempted to extend the 50% discount a while longer

Thanks Robb, it was my pleasure, I really enjoyed reading the story as well as proofreading it, As I mentioned to you I found myself at times reading the book instead of proofing it so had to go back over sections. I'm looking forward to starting work on the sequel.

I still have slots available for work through November, December and into the new year so if anyone is in need, PM me, or drop me a line publishing@fadingstreet.com or take a look at my Yellow pages entry for more information.

Don't forget that we offer a 20% discount off our rates for all KBoard members.

I am more of a lurker than a poster usually but I wanted to leave a quick comment about A Fading Street. I recently took the decision to write in a different, somewhat niche, genre (gay shifter romance with alpha-omega dynamics) and lacked anyone I felt confident could beta read with an objective eye.

The feedback I received from Graham was comprehensive and constructive, commenting on all the important aspects of the story's structure with reference to the genre. It highlighted potential issues that I hadn't picked up on. The report was delivered within the time frame agreed and was more detailed than I had been expecting. I would definitely use this service again.

Many thanks Riven I'm glad you felt the service was worth the cost. As a very straight and very human, human, reading about gay werewolf shapeshifters was as I said to you somewhat outside of my comfort zone but when push comes to shove it was a story that was interesting to read to analyse the structure rather than the subject and I enjoyed doing that.

Still slots available November and December for anyone in need of copy editing or proofreading at reasonable rates with a quick and accurate turnaround.

Looks like you were never officially welcomed, Graham, so here it is.

Also, to Robb and other satisfied customers...we appreciate member feedback on these vendor threads..but posting here just to bump the thread for the vendor isn't allowed, sorry.  That would make you part of his team, and you are considered one with him then for bumping purposes--neither of you would be allowed to post within seven days of each other. (Note our bumping rule explained below.)  I've accordingly removed a couple of posts.  Please PM me if you have any questions.

Welcome to the KB Writers Cafe!

You're welcome to promote your business and website here in the Writers' Cafe!

Now that you have an official thread, you'll want to add your listing to our Yellow Pages Listing, found here:

In your thread here, we ask that the same basic rules be followed as we have for authors in the Book Bazaar: you may have this one thread about your service and must post to it rather than start a new thread each time. New threads about the service wil be removed. Please bookmark this thread so that you can find it again to post to. And, you may not make back-to-back posts to the thread within seven days. If someone responds (such as this post), you may reply but otherwise must wait seven days, thanks!

Title: Re: Beta & Proofreading, Copy Editing NOW Audiobook Proofing 20% off all rates
Post by: A Fading Street on December 01, 2016, 06:25:15 AM
I wanted to advise that I am now offering a new service which I hope will be of value to some people

Audiobook Proofing
Audio books are becoming big business now and an important income stream for many authors. The problem is, they are time consuming to proof, time you might be better off spending promoting or writing. They are also expensive to produce so you need to get the best finished product you can.

For a fixed rate of $20 per finished hour of your audio book we will take away the job of checking the accuracy of the audio file to the manuscript. What do we listen for?

Missed words
Mispronunciation
Extraneous Sounds/Noises
Missed punctuations
Consistency of names/places and how they are spoken.
Any other problems that throw themselves up.

I record all problems on a list marked off with the Chapter Number, the time stamp of the problem, and a description of what the problem is so you can locate it quickly.

This is then something you can use to go back to your narrator to request changes once you have had a chance to check each problem to decide if it does need changing.

Turnaround time will vary dependent on workload and the number of finished hours in the book but roughly speaking allow double the finished book length. So an eight hour book will take a couple of working days to proof fully.

Please note that we cannot fix any technical issues with the file. That is something that is down to the audiobook producer/narrator.

More than happy to do a test proofing on your first chapter to give you a feel for how we work.

Slots available for
Beta Reads @ $0.00075 per word
Proofreading @ $0.0015 per word
Copy Editing @ $0.0035 per word
Audio Proofing @ $20 per finished hour.

All rates subject to 20% discount for KBoards enquiries

Slots through December need filling up and I am now taking bookings into 2017

Contact via PM or this thread and you can also reach me via the website contact form or by emailing me publishing@fadingstreet.com

Due to a last minute postponement on what will be a long book I find myself at a loose end next week so if anybody has any pre-Christmas editing, proofreading or audio book proofing needs doing, then I'm available for work.

January 2017 is filling up too so if you need work doing, feel free to send in a first chapter and I will be happy to do a test edit so you can see what I offer and how I work.

I always try to go above and beyond expectations so why not give it a try :)

Contact details in the sig below or you can mail me direct publishing@fadingstreet.com or send me a PM through KBoards.
Title: Re: Editing and Proofreading BARGAIN PACKAGE RATES for January 2017 Bookings
Post by: A Fading Street on December 28, 2016, 03:36:12 AM
In an effort to fill up available slots for January 2017 I have come up with what I hope is a bargain package for anyone out there in need of editing, beta reading or proofreading.
All of the individual elements of the package are available separately at normal rates so this is the package rate and consists of

Beta Read with a full written report
Copy Edit/Line edit
Final Proofread once changes are made.
Formatting of the book for ebook publication (this would be standard formatting with title page, working table of contents, copyright statement, links to other books or mailing list). This would be nothing fancy, just a basic formatting that would allow for immediate publishing on Amazon Kindle.

The idea behind the service is to allow an author to go from a basic manuscript to a finished product in easy steps with a sympathetic editor and a friendly shoulder to cry on :)

The rate for the complete package would be $0.004 per word all in and will apply to all slots booked during the next two weeks so if you're not going to be ready until February, book a slot in the next two weeks and you will still be able to take advantage of the offer.

If you purchased all of the elements separately the cost would be USD 5.75c per word so you are saving 30% by buying a package plus you get the formatting into the bargain.

Example costs

20000 word novella $80 all in
50000 word novel $200 all in
70000 word novel $280 all in

Any genre.
Sample edits welcomed.

Contact me via the Yellow Pages link in my signature or direct to publishing@fadingstreet.com or PM via this board/thread.

Tell your friends :) and have a Happy and creative New Year

All right, so I had to come in and talk about this. Absolute compulsion on my end.

We're not even going to get into the fact that Graham is severely undercharging for how much he does. It just needs to be said.

I went into the editing process very antsy, afraid I was going to clash with anyone I worked with because my personality has a habit of hitting people rough, and I just didn't think I'd get along with someone well enough to work on a creative project. Well, I was wrong, hands down. He was so pleasant, so kind--and I do want to emphasis that there's a difference between polite niceness and genuine kindness--went above and beyond the call, understood and matched my writing voice effortlessly, and was available to answer any questions I had with a rapid response time even though we live in wildly different time zones. And I had a lot of questions, and my own fair amount of quirks, and he was so kind and thorough. I felt safe and secure, and I trusted him, and that trust was warranted. It's obvious throughout every step of the process that you're working with a person who cares about your book being its absolute best, not just someone looking to get paid.

The turnaround time is excellent, impeded only by own bad habit of getting an email and thinking I've responded to it when I haven't.

I'll say it again for emphasis, really, above and beyond the call. Having a great editor who understands your voice as an editor, and is able to work with you on the ridiculous schedule that being a creative requires, is one of the most important things as an author. I cannot recommend his services enough.

Thank you so much, I'm blushing here  ;D I enjoyed working with you immensely and hopefully your first book will be the success it deserves to be.

Graham was fast, friendly, and actually found inconsistencies others didn't while proofreading--going beyond what was expected from the job! I totally recommend his services and will probably contact him again for my next book.  :)

Hi Priscila and thank you for those kind words. It is much appreciated indeed. I really enjoyed working on your book.

I just need to add that there are still slots available for the package deal in January/February

Have you got all your numbers right there? My calculator tells me that a 70k-word novel at $.04 per word would be $2,800.

My bad, you are quite right. If I state the rate as $4 per thousand words or $.004 per word, I think that works out right. Not enough zeros.
Thanks for pointing that out  :)

Wanted to chime in that Graham from A Fading Street was the perfect proofreader for me. He did a FANTASTIC job catching typos, misspellings, wrong word usage, etc. (oops, he told me don't use 'etc.' but I think he'll make an exception here, right, Graham? ;) Plus, he said don't use it in 'fiction' and this here testimonial is NOT a work of fiction, lol, so I'm sure he'll not put the red pen to that). Also, he did all that without messin' with my 'voice' :) . I sooooo appreciated that! I ended up approving most all of his edits/suggestions, which I've never done in the past with previous proofreaders.

I'm going to use him for my next book in my series, but I'm sure he's going to be getting busier booking more authors as he gets popular. So get him while he's cheap, you guys :D, because he really needs to up his prices for his caliber of service.

Anyway, thanks, Graham! I'll be back for more!  :-*

I went to Graham after my regular editor became unreliable and he was kind enough to fit me into his very busy schedule so I could keep my deadline. Graham will be my first-choice for editing going forward! Thanks, Graham!

Guess who's back? It's me, here to brag about Graham again. I came back for book two because I was so happy with his service, and it was an excellent decision.

I wasn't in a huge rush this time since I was ahead of schedule for book two's launch, so I got to see what the normal turnaround time was--still incredibly fast! That's just how Graham is, once he's on a project he's in the zone! Very professional, but at the same time it feels like you're working with a friend. He's got a very easy personality to get along with, has always been very respectful when bringing up suggestions and corrections, and just overall provides a very pleasant and comfortable experience throughout the entire editing phase.

One of my favorite things is the way he makes little suggestions for ways to perk up a sentence here, a paragraph there, and matches your tone so well.

He's also got a keen eye for words I'm notorious for overusing. I never knew how much I use 'snapped' or 'so' before him!  ;D  Working with him has had a positive effect on my writing process, I can tell that I'm growing with him.

I cannot stress enough what a fantastic editor he is, and he's offering absolutely ludicrous rates. Y'all better get on his schedule before I book him up forever.

Graham was one of two proofreaders that I used for my most recent book. He is professional and has an uncanny eye for things. Although I signed up for a proofread, he had some excellent suggestions for other aspects that made sense. My copyeditor had a stylesheet and he took that into account during the proofread. My book is better for having booked him.

Post by: A Fading Street on June 19, 2017, 04:09:59 AM
Having at last persuaded my other half to become involved in the business I now have extra slots available from mid-July onwards so if you need editing work or beta reading around then or want to talk about reserving slots later in the year drop me a line.
I am also looking at offering some new services from that time, some of which might be useful for authors who know their work needs editing but who just do not have the funds to pay for a full editing package.

The new services are

A Look Inside Edit- either a proofread, or a copy edit of the first 10% of your manuscript to cover the part that is available through your Amazon Look Inside feature. Alongside the cover and the blurb it is one of the three main sales tools at your disposal. Happy to offer a 500 word sample edit for either service. While this won't stop bad reviews if there are problems past the first 10%, our experience is that most of the problems in a manuscript, will be made early in the book then repeated through the rest so using this service in conjunction with carrying through the edits in highlighted problem areas yourself will likely pick up most of the issues in your book. Usual rates including the package deal apply subject to a minimum of $10.
So for example if you want a proofread on the first 10% of your 50000 word manuscript it will cost just $10. A 10% proofread on a 100K manuscript would be $15.
For a Copy Edit on a similar basis ie 10% of the manuscript, the cost would be $17.50 for a 50K manuscript or $35 for a 100K.
Our package deal rate for a copy edit followed by a final proofread on the first 10% would be $20 for a 50K manuscript or $40 for a 100K
Because of the relatively small amounts our 20% discount for new clients does not apply and the word count edited would be dependent on the length of your finished manuscript.
For details of what is involved in a proofread or a copy edit take a look at the Yellow pages listing or our website www.fadingstreet.com

Dialog Only Edit.
Dialog accounts, in our experience, for something like 50 to 75% of most fiction books and is the main source of punctuation and grammar problems for many authors. If you struggle with dialog punctuation and grammar this service may be ideal for you. Essentially this edit will be a combination of proofread and copy edit but solely on your dialog. We will check each line of dialog, and it's associated tags for typos, grammar and punctuation errors with the objective of ensuring that every line of dialog is technically correct but, in addition, where dialog appears to be out of character or it is unclear who is speaking, this will also be highlighted and suggested changes offered. We will also check that each dialog tag is in order and suggest changes where inappropriate speech tags for instance are evident or where weak adjectives or use of adverbs in tags are excessive. What this edit will NOT pick up are any plot inconsistencies that occur as part of the dialog or tags. Again, this is not a full edit and will best apply to authors who struggle with setting out and controlling their dialog sections and hopefully offered in a way to help authors with limited funds.
To account for the fact that only a portion of the book is being edited the rate for this is $0.0025 per word based on the full length of your manuscript so if your manuscript is 50K words in total, the cost to carry out the Dialog Only Edit would be $125. A 100K word manuscript would be $250. Again sample edits gladly undertaken.

Neither of the new services offer anything more than partial solutions to editing issues, I realise that but, where funds are limited, they might suit you and your budget.

If you need standard editing, beta reading, or would like to give either of the new services a try get in touch, either

Just a quick thank you to everyone who has been in touch in the last couple of weeks and also to say that August is now starting to fill up so if you need any editing work carrying out please do get in touch either through the website
www.fadingstreet.com
through email
publishing@fadingstreet.com
or through a PM through KBoards

with the extra help I now have from my dearly beloved I am also now in a position to talk to anyone who is interested in using me as a ghostwriter. This would of course be secondary to my editing work but if you can't face finishing a series or need a prequel as a giveaway or are looking to supplement existing series but just haven't got the time to devote to it, drop me a line and let's talk. Primarily my interests would lie in sci-fi, fantasy both urban and epic, crime/detective fiction or suspense although I am relatively adaptable in terms of style and happy to write in British English or US English. Rates would depend on the amount of detail I would have to work with but would start at $0.03 per word. I do have some samples available for anyone who is interested.

many thanks again to everybody.
Graham :)

Throwing in my endorsement for Graham at Fading Street.  Currently my debut novel is with him for copy editing and proofreading.  The Beta Read is complete and I was really happy with his comments and suggestions.  The ideas he provided for improving the work really resonated with me and I've made changes based on his suggestions that I feel make the story stronger.  I'll be placing my second novel in his hands, as well.

Very pleasant and responsive to work with!

Another satisfied customer reporting!  Graham did the copy editing and proofreading for my husband's novel. The comments were very helpful, drawing attention to issues to be on the lookout for in the future books.

Thanks again!

Post by: A Fading Street on August 13, 2017, 04:19:50 PM
Bookings are now filling up for September so if anyone needs editing work doing, the time is ripe to book your spot :)

Package Deals
Deal One-Our ongoing deal for Beta Read, Copy-Edit and Proofread for %0.004 per word. This has proved very popular so is now a permanent offer.

Deal Two-We are also now offering what we are calling Substantive Editing but in our case we also are offering, as part of this separate package deal to include the Copy-Editing and Proofreading stages as part of the process so not only will you get a chapter by chapter report on things like plotting/pacing/character development and the effectiveness of both narrative AND dialog sections, a complete breakdown of the main characters, their actions and interactions and where these could be improved. A breakdown of the descriptions used within the book and any suggestions for how they could be improved and of course praise for those parts that work well already :). No in-book editing at this stage although there will be comments left throughout to explain or add to what is mentioned in the report. For us the ley consideration in all editing work is that it is your story and it is told in your voice. That is something at forefront of all suggestions we make, to maintain your voice.
The report we produce runs to several pages and contains guidance for really making your story the best it can possibly be with the added benefit of having three editing passes-
Pass One-The Substantive Edit-A full written report highlighting all of those things already mentioned-
Pass Two, A copy edit as per above-
Pass Three A final Proofread to catch those last few mistakes.

All this at a rate of $0.01 per word so a 50000 word manuscript would cost $500 for the complete package.

For a Substantive Edit alone the rate would be $0.008

For this  package deal we are happy to offer a free sample edit of up to 5000 words

Buying the elements seperately would cost $0.013 oer word so the package deal represents great value.

In order to make best use of this service it is important that the manuscript is finished rather than in early draft form. We are of course happy to look over early drafts and if that is something you think would benefit the book then get in touch and we can see if we can reach a mutually agreeable cost.

Thanks to all the new clients who have come on board these last few weeks :)

For new enquiries you can get hold of us on
